5 Reasons To Get a Windows 8 Tablet

I’ve been using the Acer Iconia W510 Intel Tablet as part of the Intel #tabletcrew for almost 3 months now. This tablet has become a part of my daily life and I can’t even imagine how I ever got by without it.

I started by Getting Acquainted with my Intel Windows 8 Tablet and was absolutely over-the-moon when I discovered that Windows 8 still has a DESKTOP! *choir of angels sing*

Within a couple weeks I realized that there were many Productive Windows 8 Apps On My Intel Tablet and I am downloading more apps all the time. (Continue reading for a list of my favs!)

I’m not just having fun on my tablet though, I am getting work done on it too and being quite productive! I downloaded and browsed a Windows 8 App called “House & Home” to find an inspiration room for my Spring Bedroom Makeover!

Overall, I’m loving my tablet! Here are 5 reasons why I think YOU should get a Windows 8 Tablet and how it could improve your life.

Content and/or other value provided by our partner, Intel.

1. Convenient

It’s the perfect size to just throw it in my purse (it even fits in my clutch!) and go out the door. So if I need to run out the door with the kids for whatever reason and I also need to meet a deadline, I know I have a reliable device I can depend on to get my work done. I can get caught up on emails while I’m in a waiting room, read a book while I’m in the car (with someone else driving obviously!) or keep my almost 6 year old entertained with some of the cool apps for kids on Windows 8. (Almost all of the apps we downloaded for the kids were free!)

2. Powerful

Don’t let it’s size fool you, this thing is powerful. It’s packed with an Intel Atom Dual Core Z2760 Processor 1.5 GHz (1 MB Cache), 64 GB Internal Memory, 2 GB RAM Memory. You can even run big programs on this thing like Adobe Photoshop.

3. Battery Life

It also has an amazing battery life of 9 hours of continuous use and up to 3 weeks of standby time! Need more? You can get up to 18 hours of battery life with the detachable Keyboard Dock.

4. Great Camera

I had a Droid phone for 4 years and all I ever did was complain about how horrible the camera was. I mean, that is, if it actually loaded, didn’t crash the phone and took a picture… Thank goodness for the amazing camera in this tablet! The 8MP rear-facing camera and front-facing camera take amazingly clear, lifelike images and then I can edit and crop the images right on the tablet before uploading to Facebook, Pinterest or whatever. I also figured out that you can do high-quality face-to-face chats with Windows 8 Apps like Skype.

5. Windows 8 Apps

I never saw it coming, but I find myself hooked on Windows 8. *insert shocked-looking face here* I know it, I was like everyone else thinking that Windows 8 was going to be a flop but boy was I wrong. It’s not only expertly designed, but it’s fast, intuitive and useful. The app I use the most is probably Mercury so I can stay in touch with gtalk and yahoo friends. I use Allrecipes weekly to find recipes I can make with the ingredients I already have laying around. My favorite shopping app is most definitely Amazon. I use it constantly! Last but not least, my daughter’s favorite app is Flow Free – a neat little game that is great for young and old alike.

Dress Up The Season – Spring Bedroom Makeover

Target.comI teamed up with Target to show you how easy it is to makeover a room in your house with their Threshold Collection for around $200!

I browsed the Threshold Collection on Target.com and was amazed at the huge variety of items to choose from! Gorgeous bathroom collections, amazing curtains and lighting, too-many-beautiful-dishes-to-pick-from in the kitchen department and whenever I got to the bedroom collections, I fell in love… Decor overload!

I decided my bedroom was definitely going to be the room to get the makeover! I had redecorated my bedroom around 4 years ago when I went from a light blue/beachy, Cape Cod style theme to a more dramatic and elegant Damask and Stripes theme that was comprised of a dark red and brown color scheme. I absolutely loved it when it was finished and it’s probably my favorite room in the house, but… it is very dark and wintery feeling. So I decided a Spring Makeover was exactly what my bedroom needed.

Then I headed to Pinterest and searched for the type of bedroom decor that I had in mind. I quickly pinned a few ideas I liked and then I found my inspiration room…

I picked out all the items I wanted to create my perfect spring bedroom on Target.com. I originally had planned to order online, but some of the items I wanted were only available in stores. I stayed up till nearly 1am making a list of the items I was going to get and the next day, my mom and I headed to my local Target with my two toddlers in tow.

Upon entering the Home department, I was sooooo distracted looking at all the other items in the Threshold collection that it made me want to makeover every room in my entire house!! Everything was even more amazing and tempting in person than it was on the website. I swooned over lamps, kitchen items, decor and the wide array of curtains.

Lucky my mom went with me or I would have left with half the store in my cart! She helped me keep to my list and get only the items I needed for my Spring Bedroom Makeover. I filled 2 carts up with the items I wanted and headed for the checkout. I got everything for just a little over $200. Can you believe it?!

On the way home, I found a brand new Goodwill store and stopped to check it out. I found a couple more items to go with my new bedroom decor that I picked up for less than $10! WINNING!!

Here is my wintery, dark bedroom before the spring bedroom makeover…

5 Fashionable Windows 8 Tablet Cover Cases #TabletCrew

When I first received my Windows 8 Tablet as part of the #TabletCrew I could not find a cover or case for my precious device. I was so afraid it was going to slip out of my hands and crash to the floor, that I didn’t even want to walk with it unless I had both hands firmly grasping it.

The back of my tablet is a smooth, shiny grey metal which is super sleek and chic, but not exactly great for gripping. Before I managed to find a cover for the tablet, I bought a Audrey Hepburn Sticker for the back of it. I think Samantha likes it… (I named my tablet “Samantha”)

Now there are a bunch of cases on the market that perfectly accommodate my 10.1″ Acer Iconia W510 Intel Tablet. Many are just tablet sleeves for transporting the tablet, but luckily I found one that protects the tablet while I’m using it.

There are many companies like Casemodo and Caseable that let you custom design and personalize the cases for your specific device whether it’s a kindke, iPad or tablet. Other companies like Plus Motif offer a wide array of designs with interchangeable face plates so you can switch the design to suit your mood. With so many different places to get cases and covers now (and so many different price points) it’s hard to choose just ONE fashionable tablet case.

If you are looking for a fashionable tablet cover for your device, here are a few cool options I’ve found during my search…

Outfit Ideas: Wearing Socks with Mary Jane Shoes

Today, I spent the whole day shopping at Target, checking out their Threshold Collection. I’m doing a Spring Makeover on my bedroom and will show you the before and after pics this coming Tuesday! I think you’re going to love it…

I’m not so good with the interior decorating so I downloaded a Windows 8 app called House & Home to help me figure out what I wanted to do in my bedroom. Then I went on Target.com to check out the Threshold Collection and find the items I wanted for my bedroom makeover. Once I picked out everything I wanted, I headed to my local Target and bought it all!

Since I knew this is what my day would entail, I dressed comfy.

(Surfing the House & Home app on my Acer Iconia W510)

I think this is one of those outfits where you either love it, or you hate it… I am loving the green and I got compliments on my outfit all day while I was out, but I’ll tell ya, in a picture it’s really obvious that my “greens” don’t match! I think it looks better in person…

What’s going to be the controversial item here is wearing socks with mary janes. I got a lot of “LIKES” on Instagram, including one from GAP!

How do you feel about the wearing socks with mary jane shoes? Love it or hate it, ladies?

When Will Winter Finally End?

red roseSpring begins on March 20th this year (2013) but I’m wondering when will winter finally end? It seems we just keep getting one snow storm after another here in New Hampshire and I’ve just about had it! I want sunshine! Warm air! I want to open my windows and clean my house inside and out! I want to plant flowers and play outside! It seems like Spring will never get here…

I am not into outdoor winter sports like skiing or snowboarding, so the winter months drag on and on for me. I feel like I spend 4-5 months out of the year just waiting for better weather so I can go outside!!! I’m really not suited for New England weather at all. I think I belong in California… as far as the weather goes anyway!

I’m trying to pass the time catching up on emails, writing posts and reading books while I’m stuck indoors, staying warm. I wish I had more time to read because I have about 12 more books to read before I can become a certified Birth Doula.

kindle app for windows 8

I’ve been reading Natural Hospital Birth: The Best of Both Worlds by Cynthia Gabriel on the Kindle app in my Acer Iconia W510 Windows 8 Intel Tablet. I always thought I would want a hard copy of a book so I could highlight and take notes and have the satisfaction of closing the last page of the book when finished. However, I have found the convenience of being able to have dozens of books on my tablet that I can read anytime, anywhere, to outweigh my need for a hard copy of every single book I want to read.

I’m not particularly loving this book so far, so that hasn’t made me want to set aside time to read it either. Having self-paced school work is nice, but when it’s something you really don’t want to read or learn about, procrastination can be a huge problem. At least it is for me!

#inteltabletsI’m hoping I can finish “Natural Hospital Birth” before the end of the month, but I’m finding out that if I have 5 minutes to sit down with my Intel Tablet that I am much more likely to try to catch up on emails than I am to read a book. There are SO many things to do on my tablet that it’s hard to stay focused sometimes! I have downloaded a lot of really useful and fun Windows 8 apps and my daughter is totally hooked to Windows 8 now. I was tired of sharing my tablet with her so her computer genius uncle helped us put Windows 8 on her laptop so she can download and enjoy all the apps that I am using. I think Windows 8 is a lot more kid-friendly than any other version of Windows which is making them serious competition for the iPad now. I’m really impressed with the latest version of Windows and it runs seamlessly on my Intel Tablet.

I hope it really does start to look like Spring soon because I can’t take this winter weather another second!!! I love sitting out on my back deck in the afternoon while the kids are napping and getting some SUN! I can’t wait to do that again.

What do you like to do during the winter months? Do you engage in outdoor winter activities or do you like to stay inside and keep warm like me?

Productive Windows 8 Apps On My Intel Tablet

As you know, I’ve partnered with Intel to promote their brand new Acer Iconia W510 Intel Tablet. I was unsure how I would feel about the tablet because I had heard awful things about Windows 8, but I said it last week and I’ll say it again… I love Windows 8 now.

Windows 8 Tiles ScreenI hate it when they make a new version of Windows and change the user interface and functions… BUT for the first time since Windows XP, I actually appreciate and am embracing the changes. There are a few things about Windows 8 that annoys me, but the advantages way outweigh the annoyances for me at this point. I am ADDICTED to the Windows 8 apps! The addiction is so great at this point, that I’m unsure as to whether I want to get an iPhone or a Windows phone. There are so many useful apps and they are so much more convenient than bulky programs.

It’s like they married the convenience and fun of an iPad with the genius and power of Windows and created the most addictive piece of electronics I’ve ever owned.

Here are just a few things I love about the Intel Acer Iconia tablet…

  1. Windows 8 Apps: Easy, convenient, safe and FUN! I’ll show you some of my fav apps below.
  2. Long Battery Life: The Iconia boasts 9 hours of battery life with up to 3 weeks of standby time. Get up to 18 hours of battery life if you get the Keyboard Dock with the Tablet.
  3. Convenient Size: Slides easily into most of my handbags so I can take it with me wherever I go.
  4. Crystal Clear Display: It’s easy to see pictures, text and movies on this amazing screen.
  5. Power and Speed: Need I say more? This thing is more powerful than my big Toshiba laptop!
  6. FUN: It’s fun to use because of the touch screen and the endless amount of games are exciting to sort through!

I had a hard time finding a leather case that was specifically designed for my model tablet. I didn’t want just a standard case for a 10″ tablet. I was looking for one that would act like a book cover as well as transform into a stand. I found the KattWolf Slim Stand Leather Case for Acer Iconia W510 Tablet (With Stylus Loop and Elastic Handstrap) for $8.95 on Amazon.com

I was happy that it had all the right openings to allow easy access for charging it, adjusting the volume, etc. For the price, I was extremely happy with this purchase. It’s not perfect and it’s not ideal, but it works and will protect my little gem.

My Journey to Becoming A Birth Doula

You might have thought that The Fashionable Housewife was just a stylish, pretty face with a big interest in fashion trend, beauty products and stylish chich outfits, but there is a lot more to this woman than meets the eye and I’m hoping to start sharing a bit of my personal life and personality with you in the coming weeks and months.

First and foremost, I am training to become a Certified Birth Doula!!!!!!!!!

doula supporting motherIt’s something I’ve known for over 15 years that I’ve wanted to do, but life kept getting in the way. I’m now making time to reach for my dreams and can’t wait to embark on this amazing journey to becoming a Birth Doula.

What is a doula?

The word “doula” (pronounced ‘doo-lah’) is a Greek word for “woman’s servant.” A Birth Doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth. Some doula’s provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period as well. Studies have shown that when doulas attend a birth that the labors are shorter, have fewer complications, less likelihood of a cesarean section, babies are healthier, bond better with the mother and breastfeed more easily.

Part of the process of becoming a certified birth doula involves reading a lot of books (see picture below) and doing a lot of studying and extensive research.

doula books

I am so happy and thankful that I recently got a Acer Iconia W51Windows 8 Intel Tablet! I have quickly become addicted to several Windows 8 apps that I downloaded in the “store” which have made my personal and work life a lot easier. Honestly, I think the app I have used the most is the Kindle App which I use to read my school books.

One of the books I just finished reading on my tablet is Birth Matters: A Midwife’s Manifesta by Ina May Gaskin.

Renowned for her practice’s exemplary results and low intervention rates, Ina May Gaskin has gained international notoriety for promoting natural birth. She is a much-beloved leader of a movement that seeks to stop the hyper-medicalization of birth—which has lead to nearly a third of hospital births in America to be cesarean sections—and renew confidence in a woman’s natural ability to birth.

Upbeat and informative, Gaskin asserts that the way in which women become mothers is a women’s rights issue, and it is perhaps the act that most powerfully exhibits what it is to be instinctually human. Birth Matters is a spirited manifesta showing us how to trust women, value birth, and reconcile modern life with a process as old as our species.

I’ve studied birth extensively in the past 6 years and honestly, this is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I think EVERY pregnant woman should read this book. I found it empowering, enlightening and even brought tears of joy to my eyes several times while reading it. I purchased the kindle version but I’m going to buy the paperback version because I loved this book so much, I want to be able to loan it out to my pregnant friends so that they can have the chance to read it to. SO GOOD!

Besides the Kindle App, I like having Evernote on the tablet, on my laptop and on my desktop PC so all my notes and bookmarks are synced. At first, I didn’t think I would like Windows 8 since I wasn’t too impressed when I used it on a Windows Phone, but after a couple of weeks using Windows 8 on this touch screen tablet, I can’t imagine my life without it. All of the research I do online, I can bookmark into Evernote and then excess it from any of my computers.

I didn’t realize that Windows had built in Speech Recognition Software until I got this tablet… Yes, you can laugh at me now. But seriously, how did I not know this?! I trained it in less than 15 minutes and can’t believe how handy it is! I say “Launch Wordpad” and it opens WordPad. Then I just start talking and it types it! I can only imagine how much easier blogging could be if I had known about this earlier… At least it will be easier to write up reports etc for my Doula studies.

ANYWAY! I am definitely getting the most use out of the Kindle App because I have a ton of books left to read for my Doula training. I’m going to start reading “The Birth Partner” next.

It’s been hard to concentrate on writing good “Fashion posts” since my head is someplace else. Who would have ever guessed that a die hard fashionista would turn out to have such a passion for labor and birth. Well it goes to show, you never know! You really can’t tell everything about a person just from what you see on their blog or Facebook, etc. We always tend to put our “best foot forward” in these public domains and you really can never tell what’s going on in another person’s life… or their head. Don’t always assume you know what another person is thinking! This is a great example, because I bet none of you had any idea I was passionate about natural birth and similar subjects. Not that I was trying to hide it from anyone, it’s just there is a time and place for everything and I felt like now was the time to get a little more personal with my readers and let you know a bit about my personal life rather just always dishing out awesome fashion advice. hehe ;-)

I obviously have lots more to say on the subject of becoming a Doula but I will save that for another day!

I received an Intel Windows 8 Tablet to test and review as part of the #TabletCrew
All opinions are my own and I did NOT receive compensation for writing this post nor was I obligated to write about my tablet in this post.
