Holiday Fashion Police: What NOT to Wear

Holiday Fashion Police: What NOT to Wear

Hi fellow readers of The Fashionable Housewife! I presume that most of you are busy preparing for the holidays. And because preparations can get crazy, we tend to forget things. Sometimes we forget to eat; sometimes, we forget what our outfits look like. There are plenty of articles that tell you what to wear, but I’m here to tell you about the opposite!

  1. Do not wear last year’s outfit, especially if it’s a print. Keep in mind that the holiday season is a time for photo opportunities with family and friends, so clothing repetition is a crime.  We’ve all got basics in the closet, so jazz up those basics with a scarf, necklace, gloves, or hair accessories like a hat or beret. (By the way, hats are in for Winter ‘11). Printed outfits are difficult to forget, so if you’re dead-set on wearing last year’s outfit, augment it with a blazer, cardigan, belt, scarf, etc. – something that covers the print.
  1. No matter how pretty it is, avoid a summer dress. I know this maxim sounds ridiculous, but I have been to enough parties where a woman is quietly shivering while discreetly warming her hands on a cup of mulled wine because she was too tempted by the gorgeous drape of silk in her deep red summer dress. Sure, the color was Christmas-y and the drape was beautiful, but she couldn’t have a good time because she was too focused on how cold she was. Don’t be that woman. After all, it’s a party and parties are for having fun!

  1. Inconsistent accessories. Fashion specialists use the “rule of three” when accessorizing. Choose any three accessories like a belt, dangling earrings, and a bracelet and you’ll be fine. When you want to use more than three, perhaps a hat or a scarf, make sure to do it tastefully. Boldly printed outfits need simple accessories. Do not go overboard or else you’ll end up looking like a human Christmas tree.

  1. Do not wear what you cannot afford. Many women have label lust. Also, many women can’t afford their label lust. Trying on that designer dress is thrilling, especially you when see how it highlights your assets. But blowing your holiday cash on one dress means less money to buy several Christmas gifts for the people you love. That, or adding another hole to your credit card. Don’t do this to yourself. A good department store or a mid-end retail outlet carries fabulous outfits for a fraction of the cost of a designer dress. Purchasing from them leaves you looking stunning without burning through your hard-earned savings. If you’re the adventurous type, you might also want to check thrift stores. Who knows what kind of gem you’ll find?

Bio: Renee Bradford is a wife, mom and a part-time Marketing Executive for an artificial Christmas tree company. She will be attending several parties in the next few weeks and her outfits are all good to go.

Would You Buy This? And Wear It?

We here at The Fashionable Housewife love shoes, and we bet you do too.  Pumps, wedges, flats, boots, flip flops, they all hold a special place in our hearts.  And like you, we are pretty open to new styles and trends that can add that certain something to an outfit that can make you feel like a million bucks.  But every once in awhile a pair of shoes comes along that are so out there, so bizarre and, well, UGLY, that it makes us feel like we are missing something.  Is it a fashion trend that is so ahead of it’s time that we just aren’t ready?  Is it a style statement to which only the truly au courant can respond?  (Much like high decibel sounds can only be heard by dogs…)

Presenting this week’s Fashion Oops…

Viktor + Rolf Shearling Bootie, $995 at Shopbop.com

This Shearling Platform Bootie by Viktor + Rolf is just a total miss in my book.  Who would wear  this and HOW?  WHY?  And moreover, it costs $995.00  Plus tax.  Even in Black it can’t redeem itself…

Viktor + Rolf Platform Shearling Bootie in Black

So we would like to know what you think.  Is this a style statement whose time is yet to come?  Would you add this to your wardrobe?  And would you really spend almost a thousand dollars to have furry feet?  Leave us a comment and let us know…

Stacy London’s Tips for Fashionable, Comfortable Feet

August 17th, 2011 by Amanda Davis

We are sooooooooooo lucky to get some awesome tips on how to keep our feet comfortable whilst not forgoing fashion from Miss Fashion Hotstuff, Stacy London! She has teamed up with Dr. Scholl’s for Her to promote healthy feet and healthy fashion forward footwear! Hoorah! We love when our feet don’t hurt!

Hey gals! As a stylist, I know that finding a balance between fashion and comfort can sometimes be tricky.  In fact, chances are that most of us ladies have experienced “Fabulitis” – A.K.A. discomfort caused by the decision to wear uncomfortable, yet fabulous, shoes. Luckily, my pals at Dr. Scholl’s For Her make it possible to help forgo Fabulitis (but still be fabulous) with awesome Footcare products designed just for us gals. Here are a few of my tips for how you can be fashionable and comfortable at the same time…it’s totally possible!

STICK WITH THE STAPLES: Every woman’s wardrobe should be built around a few staple items that are versatile, good quality and classic in style. For instance, fitted pair of jeans, little black dress, white button down shirt and a comfy pair of black pumps can all be dressed up or down and should be constants in your closet. Fabulitis Comfort tip: Slip a pair of Dr. Scholl’s® For Her High Heel Insoles into your pumps to help prevent foot aches and pains caused by high heels.

DAY TO NIGHT: Be prepared on those days when you’ll be heading straight out from work, whether it’s a dinner date or meeting up with the ladies. Choose an outfit that’s work- appropriate (like a little black dress) that you can jazz up with heels and accessories before you hit the town. The key is to choose fabrics that don’t wrinkle easily and will still look great at the end of the day. Fabulitis Comfort tip: Keep a pair of Dr. Scholl’s® For Her Fast Flats™ in your purse to make the commute easy breezy after a long day.  These foldable, rollable, and (of course) stylish flats are so compact, you can carry them with you wherever you go!

EXPRESS YOURSELF: Don’t be afraid to be bold and wear items that showcase your personality. It’s easy to add flare to a classic look by incorporating a jeweled hair piece, a colorful belt or your fave accessories. And remember to have fun with it!  Fabulitis Comfort tip: Dr. Scholl’s® For Her Sole Expressions are fun and stylish insoles that provide all-day comfort and come in the cutest patterns for any occasion.

SHOP SMART: The perfect pair of heels can take an outfit from drab to fab, but shopping for “the one” takes patience. Carve out enough time to hunt down a flattering style that you feel comfortable in, and try to shop later in the day when your feet are a little swollen so you don’t purchase a pair that’s too tight. Fabulitis Comfort tip: Dr. Scholl’s® For Her Comfort Insoles keep you comfortable all day by absorbing shock and impact on the heels…plus they’re discreet and fit in most shoe styles.

WALK THE TALK: Looking uncomfortable can totally ruin the most stylish outfit (even with the most fabulous shoes). Choose clothing and shoes that look and feel good for your body type, stand up tall and own your style with confidence.  Fabulitis Comfort tip: The balls of your feet feel the most pressure when you wear your heels, so add cushioning to the area before slipping them on. Dr. Scholl’s® For Her Ball of Foot Cushions massage your feet and prevent pain from occurring in your ball of foot.

Double Denim – A Do or a Don’t?

March 21st, 2011 by Denise Shively

It seems that celebs are bringing back double
denim
with a vengeance this spring, but does that mean real women should rock the look?

Charlize Theron, Whitney Port and Ashley Greene all show off the trend with their favorite jeans and button up tops in different washes top and bottom. The trick to pulling this look off is to alternate shades of denim to avoid looking too matchy matchy, but we here at The Fashionable Housewife aren’t sure we’re really feeling this trend!

These ladies look great, but I’m pretty sure they’d look amazing wearing paper bags, too – so that isn’t saying much! What do you think about the double denim trend? Unless you live in a very trendy town (or are a celeb!) I think this look is one to take a pass on. What do you think? Do you like the double denim craze? Which celeb do you think does it the best?

Book Review: STREET BONERS by Gavin McInnes

STREET BONERS

By Gavin McInnes

Fifteen years after founding Vice, Gavin McInnes has poured his creative juices into a new endeavor: StreetCarnage.com. Growing in size and influence at an alarming rate, the site’s main feature is the new and improved version of Gavin’s “DOs and DON’Ts,” now tantalizingly called Street Boners.

These Boners have been polished and compounded into a book that takes the best of the site and adds hundreds more gems! With 1,312 photos, hilarious captions, and a harsh new rating system-from one to 10 kitten faces-STREET BONERS makes sure no glorious fashion statement goes unnoticed. Innocent citizens are either damned to hell or relentlessly exalted into heaven. Chloe Sevigny, Debbie Harry, Fred Armisen, and Tim & Eric also contribute their scathing wit to the book, and the end result is a New York fashion bible no bathroom should be without.

I received a copy of this book to review back in April and I didn’t get a chance to read the whole thing, but my husband has been getting a kick out of it! It’s like a car crash… you just can’t look away. Once he read the first few pages and bust a gut laughing at the humor in the book, he just couldn’t stop.

Not for the faint hearted… Be warned, this isn’t family friendly as it does contain come nudity and quite questionable acts of “fashion” that could be interpreted as sexual in nature. Probably not something you want your young kids flipping through. However, it’s absolutely hilarious and would make a great addition to your book collection if you can keep it out of the hands of your kids!

The book retails for $18.99 but you can get Street Boners: 1,764 Hipster Fashion Jokes on Amazon.com for around $13.

Something I Just Can’t Wear…

April 5th, 2010 by Lucie Amberg

Here in LA, the weather turned Springy and gorgeous last week, which got me itching for flirty new blouses.  I hit my favorite shops filled with optimism and energy, and I found some fabulous pieces.  But not before coming to terms with a style that just doesn’t look good on me.  Behold:

Anthurium blouse ($88 at Anthropologie.com), Lush appliqued charmeuse top ($38 marked to $18.90 at Nordstrom.com), Coterie of Flowers top ($24.99 at ShopRuche.com)

Three adorable empire-waist tops.  All of which would look awful on me.

You see, when the good Lord was passing out the bosoms, He gave me a heaping helping.  But then when He got around to distributing height, He got stingy.  And if there’s one fashion equation you can take to the bank, it is:

Abundance of bosoms + Lack of height + Empire-waist top = DISASTER

I would say this style makes me look pregnant, but that would be an insult to stylish pregnant ladies everywhere.  No, it’s more like  ”hobbit”.  I’m sure you understand why I don’t want to look like a hobbit.

So the other night- after trying on about 45 empire tops -I finally accepted that it’s never going to work.  While a defined natural waist looks best on me, I can also pull off wrap tops, kimonos, drop-waists… I can even rock a tunic!  But the choppiness of a blouse combined with the proportion of the empire cut makes me look like one giant bosom.  Okay- two giant bosoms, but you get the point.

And now that I’ve given up on this style, I feel liberated.  No matter how seductively those empire-waists call to me with their aura of carefree Summer fun, I can walk right by.  Which leaves me free to concentrate on all the fabulous looks that are right for me- the ones that make me look and feel my best.

So how about you?  Is there a style that just doesn’t work for you?  And do you think this can change as your style evolves?
