Clinique Chubby Sticks for Lips

I was at Sephora buying stocking stuffers yesterday and came across the Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm.  HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THESE?  They are FANTASTIC!    The size of a giant crayon, they glide on and soothe like Chap Stick, provide a glaze of rich color that lasts and lasts, offer just enough shine to make your face light up but not so much that your man is griping about all the gloss you’re wearing and come in a variety of luscious colors.

I bought one in almost every color (I have a lot of stockings to fill, including mine!) and stashed one in my purse and one in the car console.  Just in case.  I love the texture and richness of these glosses.  Retailing for $15 each, you can buy Clinique Chubby Sticks at Sephora, most major department stores and Clinique.com

5 Party-Ready Nail Polishes for the Holidays

If you want your nails to look as good as the rest of you this holiday season, try one of these party-ready nail polishes to complete your festive holiday look.

Sephora by OPI Spark-tacular Top Coat

Dubbed “jewelry for your nails,” this sparkly top coat from Sephora by OPI adds the perfect finishing touch to your manicure. Simply use your favorite nail color, then add a coat or two of this festive top coat over tips for a party-ready mani in a flash.

($9.50, Sephora)

OPI Las Vegas Collection Royal Flush Blush

This pinky-blush hue shows you don’t have to go overboard for fantastic holiday nails – it’s the perfect “neutral” to show off on fingers or toes! I think it would look especially fantastic peeking out of peep-toe heels, and it adds just the right amount of color without being too in-your-face. Plus, anything with “Las Vegas” in the name has got to be party-worthy.

($8.50, drugstore.com)

Lancome ‘Le Vernis’ Golden Hat Holiday Nail Color

Five shades are available from Lancome’s Golden Hat holiday nail collection, but my favorite is the one at left (Golden Hat 101.) It’s the perfect juicy berry shade, and I think it would go great to liven up a little black dress. Put it on fingers and toes for a mani/pedi that will be perfect for the holiday season.

($15, Nordstrom)

Forever21 Plum Glitter Nail Polish

I’m partial to this shade – purple is my favorite color – but it’s also a fantastic alternative to traditional red or silver polish for the holiday season. This deep royal plum shade contains plenty of sparkle to make sure your tips and toes are as festive as the holiday party you’re heading to. Plus, it’s incredibly budget-friendly.

($2.80, Forever21)

Deborah Lippman Nail Color in Boom Boom Pow

Finally, this party-ready and incredibly festive gold glitter polish from Deborah Lippman is a great shade to wear for Christmas or New Year’s! Wear it alone for a subtle sparkle, or let this polish really shine as a  top coat over a complimentary metallic gold shade. However you choose to wear it, you’ll definitely make a splash.

($20, drugstore.com)

No matter where the holiday season takes you, these five nail polish shades are completely party-ready and totally fab. Which one is your favorite?

Easy Tricks to MakeYour Life Easier

A friend of mine sent me a link to an Australian website called The Daily Buzz.  There they had posted 25 Clever Ideas to Make Your Life Easier.  Some I had heard of, some were meh, but others were so brilliant I had to re-post for our Fashionable readers.  So, in no particualr order:

Clever ideas: keep a cut apple from going brownVia: athomewithrealfood.blogspot.com

Stop cut apples browning in your child’s lunch box by securing with a rubber band.

Clever idea: stocking over vacuum to pick up lost itemsVia: instructables.com

Gotcha! Find tiny lost items like earrings by putting a stocking over the vacuum hose.

Clever idea: magnetic bobbypin storageVia: sprwmn.blogspot.com

Forever losing your bathroom essentials? Use magnetic strips to store bobby pins (and tweezers and clippers) behind a vanity door

.

Clever ideas: gift wrap storage on cupboard ceilingVia: flickr.com

Look up! Use wire to make a space to store gift wrap rolls against the ceiling, rather than cluttering up the floor.

Stay tuned later this week for some more highlights on fun ways to make everyday food more exciting.

Another Reason Why I Love Shopbop

I discovered Shopbop a few years ago through a friend whose fashion sense I greatly admired.  Sure the web site can be pricey, and the models all look very sullen and unhappy, but the vast, and I do mean VAST selection of goodies keeps me enthralled, and I love their Ultimate Closet features and the designer look books that they publish on a regular basis.

One of the nice features on Shopbop is their “Favorites” feature.  Click the little grey heart under each piece shown on the site, and it becomes one of your “Favorites”.  Then, when the piece goes on sale, you get an email notification that one of the items you want  is now more affordable and more attractive than ever!  Where I think this feature will come in really handy is in January when thousands of retailers reduce the price on thousands of things.  Imagine getting an email that all the stuff you asked Santa for (that he fogot to get you!) is now on sale.

Just an image...not an ad for a sale...yet...

In my experience Shopbop is pretty good with their inventory volume.  Of course things do sell out, but sometimes they will send you a low inventory alert too so you can make that all important decision to click or not click on the shopping cart.  I received an email this morning that something that I had put in my virtual cart two days ago (and just couldn’t commit to) was now 30% off and a whole lot more attractive!

With a little planning and imagination, January might turn out to be a great shopping month!

The “mint” e-shops, which include the T-shirt destination StyleMint, the jewelry store JewelMint and the new skincare site BeautyMint are about to welcome a new member, ShoeMint, hosted by style icon Rachel Bilson.  Those in the know have been getting teaser alerts via email and Facebook for the past few weeks about the pending launch of ShoeMint, and now it’s official.  According to  InStyle.com ”… now here’s one more thing to get excited to shop for come Black Friday 2011Rachel Bilson’s new ShoeMint footwear collection! InStyle.com just confirmed that the wallet-friendly line will launch on Friday, November 25th. Review: J.Jill Washed Silk Charmeuse Tunic

Every once in a while, I come across an item of clothing that I immediately adore, and it becomes an essential of my wardrobe.

When I received the Washed Silk Charmeuse Tunic from J.Jill, I didn’t expect it to be one of those pieces.  Historically, tunic style tops don’t work for me.  In fact, since I’m both petite and bosomy, anything without a defined waist usually makes me feel like Frumpelstiltskin.  Not in this case, though!  As soon as I tried it on, I was in love.  Why?

  • The texture is to-die-for.  So soft and luxurious, it floats on your skin like a pampering layer of your favorite expensive moisturizer.  This not only feels great (which I believe, in turn, translates into looking great) but also makes it an ideal layering piece with winter’s itchy wools.
  • It’s beautifully cut.  Despite its unstructured design, it’s so well-made that it’s quite flattering.  The hem of the tunic hit me in the perfect spot on my upper-mid thigh, making it a great companion for both skinny jeans and leggings.
  • The color is lovely.  Generally speaking, cream is a tough shade to pull off (particularly for fair-skinned folk like me).  But the shimmery sheen of the fabric gives this top a candlelit quality.

So I’m giving it my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.  I’ve worn it twice already and gotten numerous compliments; the best kind of compliments, too– not the “What a cool shirt,” kind but the “You look gorgeous!” kind.  As Madame Chanel told us, a truly great item of clothing doesn’t draw attention to itself but to the woman who wears it.

Thanks to Polyvore, I put together a couple of looks that are similar to how I’ve already worn this top.  See below:

Silk Charmeuse Shirt 1

Silk Charmeuse 2

And just for fun, since it occurred to me that this top would be glam for some splash-free lounging by a posh pool once the weather warms up again, I put this look together.  (Totally theoretical; since I have a little boy, my pool time is unlikely to be either posh or splash-free any time in the forseeable future!)
Silk Charmeuse 3

So are there any drawbacks at all?  Two teensy ones.  First, it’s a more delicate fabric.  Since it’s either handwash or dry clean, there’s some maintenance involved.  And it’s a bit sheer, so a camisole is a must.  Other than that, though, it’s a fabulous item, and a versatile, classic addition to my wardrobe.  I’m actually purchasing a second in cream and am considering picking up one in midnight as well.  (Note to J.Jill: if you make a black, I’m sold.)

If you’re in the market for high quality basics, I strongly recommend you scoot on over to J.Jill and try it on.

The Washed Silk Charmeuse Tunic by J.Jill ($99) is currently available online and in stores nationwide.

Trick-or-Treat for Healthy Teeth

If Halloween is all about the candy (come on, admit it..), then the day after Halloween is usually all about fighting the bulge that results from raiding your kids’ trick-or-treat bags.  But one important thing that gets lost in the shuffle is dental health.  What happens to your teeth when they are blasted with sugar in unnatural quantities?

“Trick-or-Treating is fun, but that much sugar can be scary for your teeth…” says Dr. Pankaj Singh, founder and CEO of Arch Dental Associates.  Here are his five tooth friendly tips for enjoying your Halloween treats:

1.  Choose candy that melts quickly and can be eaten easily.

2.  Drink a glassof water after eating candy to wash away the sugar and neutralize the acid.

3.  Avoid grazing on candy;  it increases the time sugars are in contact with tooth enamel.

4.  Have a treat with or after a meal, followed by a thorough tooth-brushing.

5.  Time is of the essence when it comes to teeth and sugar.  If not removed by brushing or swishing with water, sugar from any source can increase the likelihood of cavities.

Practicing good oral hygiene now and encouraging your children to do the same can make a big difference once the candy stash has disappeared.  Now if only it were that easy to take care of the extra calories!
