COVERGIRL Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss 7 Day Challenge

I was challenged by COVERGIRL to go topless! Without a top coat of nail polish, that is…

Their latest breakthrough product is COVERGIRL Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss that promises high gloss color that lasts as long as one week with no top coat needed!

I have to admit, when I opened up the package from Covergirl with the new polish and read the enclosed documents claiming up to 7 days of color with no top coat needed, I scoffed… Nail polish doesn’t usually last more than 3 days, TOPS, on my nails… between dishes and housecleaning and lots and lots of typing, my manicures don’t stand a snowballs chance in hell!

So I accepted their 7 Day challenge, picked one of the three colors of nail polish they sent me to try out and polished my nails.

My first impression was fairly positive. I liked the consistency of the polish and how it applied. I didn’t think I would like the bulky square cover, but upon inspection realized that the square cover actually comes OFF and a slim little cover remains that is easy to wield. I didn’t realize this till after I applied the first coat, but luckily, the big square cover didn’t seem to impede my application or steadiness of hand…

The first coat dried relatively quickly but the second coat did not and I ended up smudging one of my nails. I don’t know if I was supposed to apply one or two coats, but the first coat I applied quite thin so I decided a second coat was needed. Next time, I might just apply one coat a little thicker and see how that goes…

Here are snapshots from my 7 day challenge…

When I got to day 3 and my nails still looked amazing with no chips, I was super impressed… I mean, really, really impressed. On day 4 after doing a lot of housework and cleaning my kitchen from top to bottom, I noticed that the ends of my nails were starting to show some wear, but still no chips.

By the end of day 5 and giving both my kids a bath, I noticed a chip on my pointer finger which proceeded to get slightly bigger over the next 2 days.

By the end of a day 7, some areas around each nail were starting to fail, but overall, most of my nails still looked great. After taking the last picture for my 7 day challenge, I put one more coat of polish on top of everything and now 3 days later, my nails still look perfect. So technically this nail polish can last more than 7 days if you touch it up, which is more than I can say about most other nail polishes. I am extremely impressed with this nail polish!

In select stores now, you’ll find 15 shades of the new Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss. Expect to see an additional 30 shades in January 2013.

Nails: OPI Yoga-Ta Get This Blue Nail Polish

Last week I was looking around online for OPI Chip Skip because I heard it was really good at preventing chipped nails. I found it on Amazon from a couple different sellers, but ultimately decided to get it from “BeautyLand4U” because it came with a bottle of OPI nail polish as well. It seemed like a better deal so I went for it and purchased OPI Yoga-ta Get This Blue (i47) & Chip Skip together for $12.25 + $2.00 S&H.

FYI: OPI is a professional product, it is only sold through salons. All other online (including amazon, ebay and drugstore.com) and mass market/drug store retail is technically illegal.

As soon as it arrived, I filed my nails, buffed them, applied a layer of “Chip Skip” – a super thin and watery solution that dries really fast. Then I applied 2 coats of OPI Nail Lacquer “Yoga-Ta Get This Blue”. In the bottle when you hold it to the light, you can see green, aqua and purple speckles in the polish. When applied though, it’s just a shimmery navy blue. I finished it off with a coat of nails inc. Kensington Caviar Top Coat ($10).

It stayed on AMAZINGLY well for 6 days before I saw a chip. After 8 days, the tips of 4 nails were chipped off. I touched them up just on the ends, let it dry and then decided to throw on a coat of OPI Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” – a shimmering, glittery blue. It looked like sparkling stars against a night sky, so I added two little gold nail stickers on my ring fingers as an accent.

My nails looked great for another 4 days before they started to fail. I was really impressed with the overall staying power of this at-home manicure.

What do you think of my manicure?

5 Neon Nail Polishes for Spring & Summer

I love neon nail polish – something about it just screams spring and especially summer to me. Even if you’re not quite daring enough to rock a neon on your finger nails, these 5 pretty polishes look just as fab on toes.

1. Zoya “Ali”

This is the quintessential neon pink polish you need this season. Not only does Zoya’s Ali pack a gorgeous pink punch, but the fluorescent brightness is totally eye catching. Don’t be surprised if this becomes your go-to neon this year!

($8, Zoya.com)

2. China Glaze “Celtic Sun”

Talk about an eye-popping shade of yellow! China Glaze’s Celtic Sun is a gorgeous bright neon yellow with a hint of green undertones – it will look exceptionally good with a tan.

($5.99, Sally Beauty Supply)

3. Color Club “Wham! Pow!”

This is one of my favorite polishes in my collection – I LOVE the crazy neon orange shade! Plus, orange-inspired hues are very hot this year. Whether you wear this shade on tips or toes, you’ll turn heads everywhere you go.

($6, The Beauty Clutch)

4. Priti Nail Polish “Fishbone Cactus”

Odd names aside, this vegan nail polish is the perfect opaque shade of neon green. It will look just as lovely on fingers as it does on toes, and will be a welcome addition to your nail polish collection.

($10.50, Good Earth Beauty)

5. Milani Neon Nail Lacquer “Dude Blue”

I find it difficult to find a true blue neon, but Milani made a specialty line of lacquers dedicated to – you guessed it – neons! “Dude Blue” is a gorgeous blue neon creme that looks as gorgeous as it sounds. Plus, it’s super budget-friendly!

($4.49, drugstore.com)

What are your favorite neon nail polishes?

Nails: Layla Hologram Effect ‘Mermaid Spell’ Nail Polish

I saw Layla Hologram Effect Nail Polish in “Mermaid Spell” on Pinterest a few weeks ago and fell in love. I sent it to my mother in law (who absolutely LOVES blue nail polish) and she fell in love too. We decided we had to try it out. I bought it on eBay for $16 with free shipping, which to me was still cringe worthy since I normally don’t spend that much on ONE bottle of nail polish…

It arrived fairly quickly and I immediately threw a coat on my bare nails expecting to be amazed. It was horrendous! “What did I do wrong?!” I thought. Now normally one does not read the directions on nail polish… I mean c’mon, it’s NAIL POLISH. I think I know what to do! But here I was, turning the bottle over to see what it had to say since my nails not only looked flat and matte, but the color was dull and not sparkly at all!

I then realized you needed to use a special file to buff your nails before applying the polish. OH! ….. (paused for a moment to feel dumb) Then proceeded to remove the polish, wash my hands, let them dry, then buffed them with one side of the file, then the other side of the file to reveal glossy, shiny looking bare nails. Well logic told me that nail polish was not going to stick to this real well!

I applied 2 coats of the polish and was finally amazed with the results I was hoping for! A third coat really made them shine and sparkle. So cool!

Zappos says…

Create three-dimensional delight with these dramatic Layla Hologram Effect nail polishes! ; Made with the highest quality raw material to capture light and transform it into continually changing visual effects of liquid swirls and rainbows. ; Free of toluene, camphor, formaldehyde and DBP. ; Will not stain your nails. ; To use: On clean, bare nails, take the Layla two-sided emery board marked Side 1 and rub all over the nail. Immediately buff the nails with Side 2 and a glossy base coat will appear. Apply one full coat of Hologram Effect onto the nail. Wait a few seconds to add the second coat. Apply a top coat to seal in the design.

For myself, I found that it took THREE coats to achieve the full effect. This polish does dry extremely fast. Something to keep in mind is that you buff your nails to a super glossy sheen so the nail polish just wears right off as soon as your nails touch anything. I put on three coats, sans a top coat, and my nails were half bare by the end of the day!

Lovely, right? Totally what you would expect of $16 bottle of nail polish, right????

I read several people say that a top coat dulls the hologram effect so I didn’t bother, but clearly you have to if you want it to look good longer than just the time it takes to snap a picture.

Overall, I think this polish is great for the beautiful effect it gives your nails. It’s unlike any other polish I’ve ever used. Just amazing. You really have to see it in person to believe it… However, I think it’s almost misleading calling this nail polish because it literally flies off your nails within hours, which is not what you expect of nail polish. Unless of course you buy it in the dollar store…
