Polka dots are supposed to be the style statement of the season, but I’m a stripes girl and find it harder to get the dot factor right with an outfit. ย According to an article that appeared yesterday ย inย The Telegraph “…contrary to popular fashion advice, wearing horizontal stripes can actually make a person look thinner. ย Stripes that run across the body are more slimming than supposedly-flattering vertical stripes”, according to research by perception expert Peter Thompson of the University of York.
He asked people to compare more than 200 pairs of pictures of women wearing horizontally and vertically striped dresses. ย He then asked them to say, in each case, which of the two they thought was fatter. ย His experiment revealed that when the two women were the same size, the one wearing the horizontal-striped dress appeared to people to be the thinner of the two.
