How To Move Forward After Losing a Job

While losing a job can feel like the end of the world, remember that there are other great opportunities awaiting you. It may be the end of one chapter in your life, but it gives you a chance to reevaluate where you are heading and steer yourself in the direction you would like to go. To make the transition as stress-free as possible, consider these tips.

Apply for Unemployment

The top item in your to-do list should be to apply for Florida unemployment benefits. Unemployment pay is designed for people in your situation to help weather the time between jobs. It helps you pay your bills and provides you with a sense of security during an otherwise uncertain period of your life.

Conduct a Personal Financial Assessment

If your unemployment check is less than your prior income, it’s important to create a new budget. First, figure out how much money you have to get you through this time. You want to avoid getting into debt and hurting your credit score, but it is reasonable to draw a bit of money from your savings account, if necessary.

In general, try to reduce any luxury expenses, such as exotic vacations and shopping sprees. Since you know that this lifestyle change won’t last forever, it should be easier to exercise self-control and make wise choices. Consider:

  • Using a library to borrow books rather than purchasing
  • Cooking dinner at home rather than dining out
  • Going for a run or doing yoga at home rather than paying for a gym membership
  • Creating a coffee ritual at home rather than paying high coffee shop prices

Tell People You Are Available

Losing your job should not be viewed with shame or treated as a secret. On the contrary, it’s wise to let people know you are available and in a position to consider offers. Many people live by the adage that “it’s not what you know but who you know that makes a difference,” so don’t be shy about telling people you need a new job.

When giving the news, try to sound optimistic and focus on what type of job you’d ideally like to find. Even if someone isn’t in the position to directly offer you a job, he or she may be able to provide valuable information, such as contact information for a headhunter or a lead for a company that is hiring.

When you lose a job, taking the proper steps can make all the difference. Applying for unemployment benefits, creating a new budget, and letting people know that you are looking for a new job can help you make it through the transition period until the perfect job opportunity comes along.
