What are the mistakes that you can avoid?
There are a lot of common errors that can happen. If you’re wondering the common mistakes people make while writing sentences, here are five of them.
- The use of semicolon
Semicolons are required when you cannot use a comma or a full stop. Unfortunately, not many are sure as to when to use them. People often think that they can substitute the semicolon with a comma; well, they cannot.
Semicolons tell you when you want to express a different line of thought in the same sentence, just like the one above.
- Who and Whom
This one’s another of the common errors committed by millions worldwide. While they sound similar, the two words aren’t the same. “Who” is actually a subjective pronoun. On the other hand, “whom” refers to an objective pronoun. So, “For whom are these flowers kept?” is right. Substitute “whom” with “who”, and you’re going the wrong way.
- “May”, and “Might”, or even “Shall” and “Can”
No, they do not mean the same. The word “May” indicates a possibility. However, “might” indicates that a situation may or may not happen, and the degree of it happening is far lesser.
Similarly, using “shall” in a sentence means that the user is bound to do it. Using “can” on the other hand, means that the user is at their freedom to choose whether to do it or not.
- Since and Because
The word “Since” talks about a particular frame of time. For instance, “Since the time Sam broke up with Sia, things have never been the same”.
“Because”, on the other hand, points to the causation of the thing. If we were to use “because” in the above sentence, it would go like this, “Because Sam broke up with Sia who is her office colleague, she has been avoiding going to the office.”
- Then and Than
The word “then” actually refers to a point of time. For instance, “If Sia broke up with Sam, then she would be happier”.
“Than”, on the other hand, refers to a comparison between two individuals or things. For instance, “Ron is a better guy for Sia than Sam”.
