Review: J.Jill Marled Sweater Coat

December 2nd, 2011 by Lucie Amberg

Even here in SoCal, the weather turned chilly right before Thanksgiving, so I found myself giving thanks for a cozy item I had for review. The J.Jill marled sweater coat is a full-length, cardigan style sweater in a plush (and surprisingly soft) wool.

Since I have yet to reach 5’3″ on the measuring stick (after 20 years of trying), I have never worn a sweater coat before. It’s always seemed like too much for a petite person, and this one was a bit long for me. Despite that, like all J.Jill items I’ve tried, it’s very well made. The shoulders and body of the sweater are beautifully tailored, avoiding the slightly sloppy look of some sweater coats. It would just work better on someone who’s at least 5’6″.

That said, I certainly enjoyed it. First of all, it’s quite warm; in fact, the only thing currently in my closet that’s warmer is my winter coat. Whenever it actually gets cold here, my house turns into an igloo, so having this sweater coat was crucial during our recent frosty spell. And even though I’m typically sensitive to wool (to the point of not wearing it), this wool is so high-quality that it’s actually soft enough to curl up in.

Also, the marled pattern is lovely– a pretty mix of browns, greys, and creams. It’s a great going-apple-picking-in-New-England kind of look. If I lived in a cold clime and were taller, that’s exactly how I’d wear it, just toss it on over jeans. I Polyvored the following, though, to show you how I wore it while compensating for my (lack of) height.

J.Jill Sweater Coat

Wearing black from top to bottom gave me an illusion of length, so the sweater coat didn’t look overwhelming. If I’d really wanted to stretch that, I could have worn a boot with a heel.
So while this item presents a few challenges for my fellow petites, I can definitely recommend it for taller ladies. It is a true classic, the type of piece I can envision someone gleefully pulling out every October.

The J.Jill Marled Sweater Coat retails for $199.

Not Your Mother’s Pendleton Wool

When I think of the brand Pendleton I think of warm blankets and wooly home accessories, and occasionally the name brings to mind conservative woolen outfits and prim and proper clothing.  This is what I see:

So imagine my surprise when I stumbled across this AWESOME dress from Pendleton for Opening Ceremony.

Pendleton for Opening Ceremony Pencil Dress $599 at Shopbop.com

According to the Shopbop.com  web site …”Fashion rebels at Opening Ceremony, known for their avant-garde boutiques in New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, discovered a partner in heritage textiler Pendleton when they visited century-old woolen mills in Oregon in 2009. The result of their collaboration is Pendelton Meets Opening Ceremony, a collection of artfully constructed pieces in timeless plaids, intricate patterns, and brilliant hues. Inspired by American legends and world travelers, this line brings out the stylish free spirit in all.”

I love these jackets and the messenger bag!  The mini skirt is fantastic.  The vibrant colors are great for the dreary winter months, and bold prints can work for daytime casual as well as downtown funk.  Definitely not your mother’s Pendleton!  You can find most of these pieces, along with many other vibrant selections at Openingceremony.us/.

Review: J.Jill Washed Silk Charmeuse Tunic

November 9th, 2011 by Lucie Amberg

Every once in a while, I come across an item of clothing that I immediately adore, and it becomes an essential of my wardrobe.

When I received the Washed Silk Charmeuse Tunic from J.Jill, I didn’t expect it to be one of those pieces.  Historically, tunic style tops don’t work for me.  In fact, since I’m both petite and bosomy, anything without a defined waist usually makes me feel like Frumpelstiltskin.  Not in this case, though!  As soon as I tried it on, I was in love.  Why?

  • The texture is to-die-for.  So soft and luxurious, it floats on your skin like a pampering layer of your favorite expensive moisturizer.  This not only feels great (which I believe, in turn, translates into looking great) but also makes it an ideal layering piece with winter’s itchy wools.
  • It’s beautifully cut.  Despite its unstructured design, it’s so well-made that it’s quite flattering.  The hem of the tunic hit me in the perfect spot on my upper-mid thigh, making it a great companion for both skinny jeans and leggings.
  • The color is lovely.  Generally speaking, cream is a tough shade to pull off (particularly for fair-skinned folk like me).  But the shimmery sheen of the fabric gives this top a candlelit quality.

So I’m giving it my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.  I’ve worn it twice already and gotten numerous compliments; the best kind of compliments, too– not the “What a cool shirt,” kind but the “You look gorgeous!” kind.  As Madame Chanel told us, a truly great item of clothing doesn’t draw attention to itself but to the woman who wears it.

Thanks to Polyvore, I put together a couple of looks that are similar to how I’ve already worn this top.  See below:

Silk Charmeuse Shirt 1

Silk Charmeuse 2

And just for fun, since it occurred to me that this top would be glam for some splash-free lounging by a posh pool once the weather warms up again, I put this look together.  (Totally theoretical; since I have a little boy, my pool time is unlikely to be either posh or splash-free any time in the forseeable future!)
Silk Charmeuse 3

So are there any drawbacks at all?  Two teensy ones.  First, it’s a more delicate fabric.  Since it’s either handwash or dry clean, there’s some maintenance involved.  And it’s a bit sheer, so a camisole is a must.  Other than that, though, it’s a fabulous item, and a versatile, classic addition to my wardrobe.  I’m actually purchasing a second in cream and am considering picking up one in midnight as well.  (Note to J.Jill: if you make a black, I’m sold.)

If you’re in the market for high quality basics, I strongly recommend you scoot on over to J.Jill and try it on.

The Washed Silk Charmeuse Tunic by J.Jill ($99) is currently available online and in stores nationwide.

Fall Shoes: Dr Scholl’s Shoes Ali Ankle Boot with Cuff

My latest obsession is the Dr. Scholl’s Shoes Ali Ankle Boots. I’ve been wearing them almost every other day this month (minus during the freak 20 inches of snow we received here in New Hampshire last weekend… Snow in October, can you believe it?!)

These little ankle boots are SO CUTE and so versatile. I’ve been wearing them with ankle length skinny jeans, leggings and tunics, and dresses and skirts with tights. They look great with all my Fall outfits!

Dr. Scholls Ali Boots Women Saddle Leather

Not only are they super cute, in my humble opinion, but they are incredibly comfortable too. They are equipped with a Memory Fit Foam insole that is so soft and squishy, you will forget you are wearing them.

I thought the beveled heel would be a fall hazard since I tend to rely heavily on my heels when walking (I’m not used to wearing high heel shoes anymore!) but I can safety say that they are very easy to walk in and I haven’t slipped and fallen on my butt yet! LOL

I thought I would have trouble putting outfits together to look good with the little cuff on these ankle boots, but I didn’t. They actually go with everything and I style my outfits as if they are regular oxford menswear styled ankle boots.

They are pictured above in Saddle Tan, which is the color I’ve been wearing. They also come in a really nice looking Elephant Grey/Black combo as well as Malt Taupe.

PRICE: Retail $99.00

AVAILABILITY: DrSchollsShoes.com, PlanetShoes.com, ShoeMall.com, Endless.com and Macys.com

Get the Dr. Scholl’s Shoes Ali Ankle Boot on Amazon.com for as low as $77.29 (as of 11/5/2011 when this was published!)

Style Mint (the cousin of Jewel Mint – the fabulous site that is sponsoring a give away ending tomorrow on The Fashionable Housewife…don’t forget to enter..!) is one of my favorite shopping sites.  I read a quote that said “…anything the Olsen twins touch turns to gold…” and I couldn’t agree more.  The T-shirts the offer on StyleMint.com are very stylish and made with great quality and attention to detail.  But what I’m loving right now are their Halloween styling suggestions.  Today’s theme is Witchy Vibes.  Check out this Tumblr:
