In an earlier post I put some skinny jeans out there as an idea for an outfit. One of our readers, Abe (thanks for the comment Abe!!) pointed out that they may not work for someone whose body has endured child birth! I love our readers comments, it is so fun to have a great interactive setting where we get tips and tricks on how exactly to be trendy when we feel our bodies, from babies and otherwise, are not at their peak! Abe, you are not alone!
It is true that skinny jeans get a bad rap for being, well, so skinny first of all! And along those same lines it’s easy to think that they are for the younger set because they tend to be “skinny”. But I want to dispel that myth! Sure we have all seen someone thinking they can pull off the look and doing it horribly, but don’t let that deter you. Skinny jeans can be very flattering to many body types if worn properly.
There are two great features of a skinny jean (or pant) is that allows them to be so versatile. The first is that they tend to be have a lower rise (or a really short zipper), which means that they hit lower on the hip; albeit a time or too dangerously low. But use this to your advantage! You don’t have to “put” as much of your mid-section into the jean. Seems a little crazy, I know… but this leads me to my second point. The skinniness on the bottom, if you will, allows you to overcompensate up top. Long and flowy tops are PERFECT for pairing with the skinny jean. And you can choose to belt (if you feel comfortable) or be free and flowing with no belt at all as well.
One of my favorite personal looks these days is a skinny jean with a mini dress. I included an example below. Let the jeans cover the legs and the dress cover the top. It can be casual with a high boot or high style with a pump. Then nicely paired with simple accessories and a great handbag and not only have you completely pulled off the skinny jean but you look sophisticated and up with the trends. Moms should not be left out of this fun and easy trend!
Hey, I really like the idea of the skinny jeans with a dress. Still, from all my studying during “What Not To Wear” LOL, I would imagine most fashion “advisers” would tell the average woman to proceed with caution when it comes to the skinny jean. It’s not going to elongate, it’s going to make any hips bigger than Kate Moss’ look really curvy…but I do think it can be super cute if you can pull it off. At my current size and gooey-ness, I think I should avoid :)
I’m a mom too and I have yet to find a pair of these I can wear. I’m 5’9″ and a size 4 and still cannot make my way into a pair…LOL I have tried on every brand imaginable and by body just isn’t having it ;) Lucky for me, I LOVE wide leg jeans and they look great on me.
If you can get into a skinny jean, more power to ya sista!
I’m a size 6 right now and I can wear them! If I can, you definitely can…
I’m betting you haven’t tried NYDJ skinny jeans. I can fit into their size 4’s… which is like a little miracle. The secret to finding skinny jeans to fit our bodies is 4% or more spandex. Most “stretch” jeans only have 2%. You really need the 4% or more if you have any semblance of a shape to ya.
You can try them on at Nordstroms. You have no idea what you’re missing!
And you can get them on eBay for less than $30.
Tried those too. Truthfully, I like the look of a boot cut or wide-leg better on me anyway, so it’s not a big deal.
Great article! Although I personally can’t wear them. I am too large for them to fit properly. I prefer a wide legged – bell bottomish – type of jean. I dunno, it seems to look better on my short legs too!
I am a recent house wife. Just out of a job and loving it. I love this site and looking forward to reading more blogs. Any tips??
I am a convert to skinny jeans. I am generally a size 8 and bought a pair of Vera Wang at Kohls (so we are not talking expensive here). Since you can wear flowly and/or long tops, I totally agree that they can cover a problem midsection. Plus, they look great with tall boots in the winter and make you look oh so stylish.
Oh, Dhanashree, I forgot to answer your question. I just found this blog and love it. My other fave is You Look Fab (youlookfab.com). She gives awesome advice and their are forums where readers can post outfits, ask questions, etc.
I love love love skinny jeans. And I happen to be a very curvy size 9, but the trick i find is wear your size make sure it fits ( no muffin tops or unusually leg ripples) and your golden. Trust me I’ve seen a women of a size 16 in them and she looked great it’s all about how you jazz it up. I’ve gotten some from target yes target and they looked goood :)
