What is Fatty Liver?
Fatty liver is commonly found among obese people. Fatty liver is usually associated with abdominal obesity and is considered as the biggest disease after diabetes. It causes insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes and may also lead to inflammation of the liver after prolonged illness. This can cause scarring and hardening of the liver. When scarring becomes extensive, it turns into a fatal condition called cirrhosis, which can lead to liver failure.
What causes Fatty Liver?
It is believed that excessive stress and consumption of fatty or oily food causes fatty liver. When you are stressed, your adrenal glands pump out cortisol, the stress hormone. Cortisol causes the deposition of abdominal fat, including fat deposits in the liver. Similarly, too much alcohol consumption also causes the liver to acquire fat, possibly to protect it from the alcohol toxins. Obesity itself and diabetes mellitus can cause fatty liver, and in turn be caused by the condition. Eating fats alone seems not to cause the condition, but more intake of trans- fats and inflammatory fats may be associated with causing fatty liver.
Many people with a fatty liver are unaware that they even have a liver problem, as the symptoms can be vague and non-specific, especially in the early stages. Most people with a fatty liver feel generally unwell, and find they are becoming increasingly fatigued and overweight for no apparent reason. However, if the symptoms of fatty liver disease are not checked at an early stage, then they could lead to jaundice or liver cirrhosis.
