What To Do When Your Child Needs Help With School Work

When kids first enter school, it’s always a new, exciting, and sometimes nerve-wracking experience for them. But as they grow more familiar with their environment and start to get used to the routine, things become much easier. Those first few years of school focus on the foundations and basics of learning, with plenty of attention on learning through play and socializing which can really broaden their world.

As time passes, however, the school work gets tougher, more intense, and there’s just more of it. Those learning games disappear and now kids are expected to dig in and really tackle all the various subjects. For many kids, this isn’t always easy. They may have trouble with one or more subjects, resulting in falling grades. This is where moms can step in, as they always know best, and they can offer their child help with school work.

Here’s a look at some ways moms can help with school work as well as how to know when it’s time to get outside help for their kids.

Why Do They Need Help With School Work?

Before you look for places that can offer help with school work, it may be a good idea to talk to them about what is going on. Why are they having a hard time at school? Is it the subject manner, is the class moving along faster than they can handle, do they have too big of a workload (too many classes)? Then again, maybe it doesn’t have to do with school at all.

Sometimes outside stress, commitments, and responsibilities can affect their school work. If that’s the case, then maybe just a one-time or temporary solution is needed. They may just need some help writing essay legally or they may just need assistance in finding a quiet space to study.

Also consider things like maybe your child is being bullied, doesn’t like their teacher, or even having trouble concentrating. If you think your child might have an issue like ADHD, ask your child’s doctor and look into natural remedies for ADHD first, before resorting to medication. 

Speak To The Teacher

If you think your child needs help with school work, the first course of action should be to speak with your child’s teacher.  This is most important for kids who are still in elementary school, and even high school to some extent. Speaking to their teacher and letting them know that your child is having a hard time in the class can be extremely helpful. It lets the teacher know what’s going on so that they can offer up some tips, solutions, and maybe send home extra work for practicing and studying or less work if the amount of homework has become overwhelming. 

Now obviously if your child is in college or university, it’s up to them if they want to speak to their professor. If your college-aged student needs help with school work, talk to your child and help them come up with a solution.

Join a Study Group

Another great resource for when your child needs help with school work is to join a study group. Often it can be helpful to study with peers as it can help each student to better understand the material. Study groups often spark discussions about the topic, which is what helps to create that deeper understanding.

Hire a Tutor

It may also be necessary to hire on a private tutor for one or more topics. A tutor will provide one-on-one learning opportunities to help with school work and usually a few hours a week is sufficient. Just be sure you find a tutor that specializes in the subjects your child is having a hard time in and ask for references before you hire anyone.

Ensure They Feel Comfortable Talking to You

The final tip is to make sure your child, no matter their age, always feels comfortable talking to you about the stress and problems they have at school. You want to feel comfortable telling you that they need help with school work. As their mom, you always want your child to know they can look to you for help no matter what the problem is.
