I was very surprised to find dairy-free ice cream that was actually edible. No seriously, if you are lactose intolerant and have bought dairy-free ice cream at the grocery store before, you will know exactly what I mean.
I am mildly lactose intolerant in that I can tolerate small amount of dairy so long as I take a big dose of probiotics daily in addition to all the yogurt I eat. If I don’t have good, quality probiotics for a few days, I don’t feel too good. Because of this, I’ve tried a lot of dairy free ice creams in my day! I hate that crispy, iciness that most dairy-free ice creams possess. I like the CREAM in ice cream, not the ice! I didn’t think I would ever find a dairy-free ice cream that I would like until I discovered DF Mavens. This is pretty much the closest to “ice cream” as you are going to get and still be dairy-free!
I received a small selection of their dairy-free frozen desserts including New Orleans Salted Praline and Peanut Butter Fudge Mash, both made with soy milk. I also got to try out their coconut milk ice creams including Del Lago Chocolate and Madagascar Vanilla Bean.
While I liked the texture of the ones made with coconut milk a lot better than the soy, I definitely liked the New Orleans Salted Praline the best. Pecans? Yummy. Caramel? Yummy. What’s not to love there? The intensity and sweetness of the caramel completely masked any flavors of soy that might be there.
So far I haven’t found these in a store near me, but if you spot them in your local Whole Foods Market, definitely grab a pint and try them out! Alternatively, you can actually order their ice cream right on the website and it will be delivered right to your door. Um, yes please and thank you!
I’m lusting over flavors like Cardamom Pistachio, Caramel Apple Almond, Mocha Almond Chip, Mint Almond Cookie all made with Almond milk. Then flavors like Key Lime Crème and Alphonso Mango made with coconut milk are definitely calling my name. I’m thinking I need a pint of Shot of Java too…
On top of being dairy-free, all of their ice creams are also certified gluten free too. Absolutely the best dairy-free frozen dessert I’ve had so far. Beats Toffuti and Soy Dream hands down. I threw both those pints in the trash after a few bites… The first time I had DF Mavens ice cream, I sat down and ate half a pint in one sitting. Whoops! (That was the New Orleans Salted Praline in case you were wondering!)
While I wouldn’t sit and eat a whole pint of the coconut milk flavors that I tried (Del Lago Chocolate and Madagascar Vanilla Bean) they would be absolutely perfect as a topping. Imagine a big scoop of chocolate ice cream on something like one of those homemade chocolate chip cookies in a cast iron pan. Now imagine a big ol’ scoop of vanilla on strawberry shortcake or pumpkin pie… Is your mouth watering yet?
