Finding your time a little on the weekends? Sometimes, a new hobby can be a fun way to spend the time and to learn a new skill or two while you’re at it. The catch can be finding a new project or hobby area that interests you.
Before you know it, you’ll be hunting for new knitting patterns, hoarding seeds and spending your nights staring at the sky. Here are 3 great weekend hobbies you can try.
Knitting
Knitting (and crochet, actually) is one of the hottest hobbies right now. It’s fairly easy once you learn 2 or 3 stitches and you can get started without having to buy much equipment or supplies. A pair of knitting needles and some lovely yarn, and you’re ready to go.
There are many great knitting channels on Youtube where you can watch how stitches are done, which is a much easier way than trying to learn from a printed page. Don’t worry about complicated patterns. Just get the hang of the basic knit stitch, and start off with a scarf. Before you know it, you’ll be knitting hats, mitts and sweaters too.
Gardening
Don’t be fooled into thinking that gardening is only for people with large open yard spaces. Even small yards, decks, balconies, and windowsills can become a thriving garden. If you have a yard, you just need to loosen up some dirt to make a new garden spot or get some containers and potting soil if you are taking a container route. You can either start with seedlings if you are impatient or just buy a packet of seeds to begin. Find out what your plants will need before you choose a location though.
Herbs are an easy place to start as they usually grow without much care, and are fun to harvest for the kitchen.
It’s well-known that gardening is good for your health, so plant a couple of seeds or pot some new plants this weekend. If you keep your plans small (to start), you won’t be overwhelmed with weeding or watering chores.
Astronomy
This is one hobby that can require a little more investment, but you can get into all kinds of stargazing without necessarily buying an expensive telescope. There are many handy apps that you can use to help you orient yourself and to explain what you are seeing when you look up at the sky, no matter where you are in the world.
Being able to recognize the many sights of space can be a wonderful experience. Add in an inexpensive telescope to broaden your new hobby, and there is no limit to what you can see. Learn about constellations, find other planets, name the stars or even get a glimpse of the International Space Station going by.
One of the greatest aspects of astronomy is that the sky changes every day, and you’ll see new things depending on what time of the year it is.
So this weekend, when you’re sitting around watching TV and feeling bored, why not give a new hobby a try?
