Vampire Fashion Without Going Goth
I just started reading Twilight. (I know, a little late to the game on that one.) It’s a totally enjoyable, guilty pleasure read, but I probably wouldn’t have picked it up if it weren’t for the overwhelming vampire takeover going on in pop culture. Any trend that burns this bright is destined to crash hard someday, so vampires are almost certainly going to go out of style. But with at least two more Twilight movies coming, a new season of True Blood filming, and several other vampire projects in the works, I’m guessing this trend still has some life in it. So I started wondering: if you aren’t in the market for a typical Goth look, is there a way to bring fang-inspired fashion into your wardrobe?
Recently released stills from New Moon show our favorite bloodsucking teens sporting sassy ensembles with a noticeable Victorian flavor. Seriously- even fingerless gloves, and when you break out those babies you are truly rocking it like it’s 1899. If that’s a little much for you, consider adding old-fashioned flair with a velvet blazer.

Or you can look for a classic, turn-of-the-century style boot.

Of course, vampire stories are known for their torrid love scenes. If you want to dress the part, add a smoldering suggestion of lace.

Like all trends, a little dab will do you. If someone mistakes you for an extra in A Christmas Carol, it’s time to tone it down. But with all the sumptuous fabrics and romantic styles out there, this is a fun idea to play around with, and it shows you know how to cleverly incorporate pop culture phenomena into your personal style. Hit the right balance and you’ll look so good, you’ll be delectable…

Sorry, but the only thing on here that seems to vome close to the vampire image is the boots. The tops shown at the top look like any other clothes out there. Those of us in the scene try to polish our image as best we can and some of us spend money doing it. The classic vampire look is very strongly related to victorianism. If you want to look the vampire image, examining the victorian look is a very good place to start. They were fancy, often with ruffles and lace. About the turn of the last century it started getting plain, especially the men’s. Believe it or not the women got much of their fashions from victorian men. That’s where blouses came from.
Thanks for an interesting perspective. These ideas are primarily geared towards people who aren’t part of the scene but just want to flirt with the idea. But of course, someone can always take it further! As far as I’m concerned, anything goes as long as it’s fresh and fun without being costumey. : )
