Hour Glass Shape

A much sought after body, with a curvy body type. Well defined waist and proportional breasts and hips. If you turn sideways you can visualize an S shape on your body’s profile. Their only flaw? If they gain weight, they have a tendency to gain it all over the body. Celebrities with and Hour Glass Shape include Jessica Simpson and Angelina Jolie.
Signs you are an Hour Glass:
1. When shopping for clothes, your tops’ size always matches your bottoms’
2. You tend to have the most common body size, and have trouble buying clothes during a sale
3. People tell you “You should be a model”
Tips: You’re one lucky woman! With your body type you can pretty much wear any style you want.
Apple Shape

You’re top heavy, and smaller from the waist down. The Apple is similar to the Hour Glass, but you have slightly larger upper body with broad shoulders.
Think of an upside down triangle with the two corners on the top. That would represent your shoulders. Celebrities with Apple shape bodies include Tyra Banks and Dolly Parton.
Signs you are an Apple:
1. Large chest or breasts for your frame
2. Broad shoulders
3. Or generally your upper body has a larger frame compared to your bottom’s
Tips: Avoid wearing low cut tops, instead wear shirts with high necklines or thick straps. Wrap shirts and wrap dresses are best for your body shape. V necklines are flattering as long as they don’t show too much cleavage. Because of your large chest, if you show too much, it can look sluty instead of flattering.
Pear Shape

You are smaller on top, and larger on the bottom. Think of a tear drop shape, it gets larger at the bottom. Chances are, you have trouble finding a dress the right size and your pant size is 2 or more sizes bigger than your shirt size. If you have a similar body type to Oprah, then you’re a Pear.
Signs you are a Pear:
1. Large hips and thighs
2. Smaller upper body
3. When you gain weight, it tends to show up around your thighs and hips
Tips: If you want to draw the attention from how big your thighs and butt are, wear loose fitting tops with slim fitting pants or jeans. If you don’t mind your shape, then show off your curves with slim fitting clothes that accentuate your small waist. Remember that you should wear solid, dark colors on the bottom and lighter colors on top (light colors draw the attention to your top).
Round Shape

Most of your weight is around your tummy, and you probably have large breasts. You have an overall rounded body shape with a wide waist. Many women at one point or another will fall under this shape due to natural changes in the body.
Signs you are a Round shape:
1. You have narrow shoulders and hips.
2. You don’t have a well defined waistline
3. The centre of your body is largest
4. Or you may wear plus sizes.
Tips: Prints and patterns will help distract the eyes away from the body. A staple item for you should be a body shaper. These are great when you want to wear dresses. Tummy control underwear or pantyhose will to help flatten your gut. Shorter shorts will make your entire body appear longer. You want to try to define your waist as much as possible. Buy clothes that will accentuate your waist and make your top and bottom appear bigger. Remember the goal when dressing is to have an hourglass figure in the end.
Slim or Athletic Shape

You’ve got a small frame in general, with little or no curves. Slim/Athletic women have small bone structures, with lower than average body fat percentage.
Signs you’re Slim/Athletic:
1. You’re an athlete!
2. Your body hasn’t fully matured yet
3. People always tell you “You’re so skinny!”
4. You wear tall or petite sizes
5. Or you have a small bust size
Tips: If you aren’t very curvy, your goal should be to create curves (in the right places). If you have small breasts, wear push up or add-a-cup-size bras to make your top half larger. Wear knee-length skirts that flare out. A-line skirts are very flattering. Choose solid colors and avoid designs that are too detailed. You want a smooth appearance to make your breasts and butt pop out.

August 4th, 2008 at 3:01 pmI am so confused. I went from thinking I was a rectangle shape the other day, to hourglass last night, to pear today!
I have the book The Science of Sexy, which is great, but sometimes TMI!
My shoulders are 39″, chest 34″, waist 31″, hips 40, and thighs are 39.
Any ideas? -

August 4th, 2008 at 3:10 pmHi Kelly,
Thanks for your comment on the site. You sound like you are in between an Hourglass shape and a Pear shape. If you usually wear small or medium tops and medium to large bottoms, then you are probably a pear shape. But I would tell you that you can still wear things that are fit for hourglass.
Your measurements are close to mine and I am between Hourglass and Pear.
You are definitely not rectangle shaped! That would be for measurements of like 34″ chest 32″ waist and 34-36″ hips. Not a lot of variance there.
Let me know if you need more help darling!

September 7th, 2008 at 11:00 amHi! Great site, but I still have problems knowing my own body shape. My measurements are: chest 37″, waist 27″, hip 38″. My bra size is 32 DD in US sizing (32 E UK size, 70F EU). I look fat in most knitted tops, empire cut tops is not an option so I often wear quite slim jeans and a slim, longer tank top. I like the shape of my body but clothes are not easy finding and I don’t know anyone who looks like me so please help me determing my shape.

Hello Darling!
Sounds like you are an hourglass shape with some water weight (or 5 extra pounds). Not a problem though! If you feel chubby in tight tops, I recommend getting some layering camis like the Yummie Tummie Strappy T Shapewear Tank or the SPANX Hide & Sleek Lace Trim V-Neck Camisole. You also might like

You just emailed me back with a picture and now I have more to say!
Okay, you are definitely hourglass darling. You body shape is perfect and you look great! Finding clothes should be a cinch.
You can pretty much wear whatever you want. My body shape is a bit like yours but my thighs are bigger. If I had smaller thighs like yours, I would wear slim jeans or boot cut jeans with just about any top. You would also look great in a pencil skit with or without a high waist. (Both would look great) You definitely don’t need to wear empire waist tops or babydoll tops, because you do not need to hide your tummy. And forget what I said about water weight and losing 5 pounds because you look great. And you shouldn’t feel fat!
And you may consider trying something like a 34C. That may fit better, I don’t know…
Let me know if you need more help!

September 7th, 2008 at 9:47 pmI have always struggled with finding clothes that fit me just right. I don’t know how many times I have gone to the mall only to come home in total frustration, vowing to never shop again. Usually, I try on 50 different things and find something wrong with each one of the items I pick.
For some reason, the clothes always look better on the hanger, only to make me want to scream when I try them on. Completely frustrated after a recent shopping nightmare, I did some research.
I found a website that has really helped. It helped me understand my body type and why certain things look better than others. They used a very creative way to describe my body shape. As it turns out, I am a Sapphire.
If you are like me, and hate shopping because of the frustration involved, check it out. The website is http://www.holobi.com. I am not sure if I will buy any of the clothes from the site because I like trying things on first, but I did buy the holobi product and love it.
Can’t wait to go shopping!!!

October 6th, 2008 at 10:34 amI have and am struggling to find closthes that fit me and make me look good. I have an hour glass figure. At least I think I do. But the frustrating thing is that I have wide shoulders and since I excercise, I have a six pack. If I wear clothes that emphasize my waist, or that are really tight my muscle shows and that looks bad.
My sizes are 36 breast, 25 waist and 28hips.

9. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
October 6th, 2008 at 11:43 amIna,
It sounds like you are actually an Apple Shape. If you are worried about your muscles showing through shirts, I would stick to tailored blouses and thicker knits like Cashmere and Chenille this Fall/Winter.
Look for clothes that accentuate your bottom half like a-line skirts, wide leg jeans, and even bubble or tulip skirts. Steer clear of skinny jeans and tights tops because that may make you look top heavy.
Also, consider trying some high waisted skirts and jeans. That will accentuate your bottom half and cover your six pack so you can wear tight tops.
Hope that helps! At least in the summer, you can rock that six pack in a bikini and not worry about it!
Let me know if you have any any more questions. I’d be happy to help!

12. Maranda Says:
January 6th, 2009 at 1:42 pmOk. so since this is a “housewife” site, I’m gonna ask the question every pregnant woman wants to know…what looks best when you are getting rid of the baby weight? Im usually a size 10-12 with a decent hourglass shape (i def have the extra 5-10 lbs, but I deal with that. Only so many hours in a day.) But after this child (my 2nd and last) is born, I know there will be about 6 months there when I am losing the 35-40 lbs that I gained during pregnancy. Now, there will be no complaints in the bust area, but my belly takes longer to get back into shape. Does that mean buy/wear round shape clothes? Or does that mean something else? There is no good way to explain the after baby mush belly or the shape of my entire body..its just an awkward time…but it doesn’t mean that I have completely lost all fashion sense, and I don’t want to look as if I have either
-
13. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
January 6th, 2009 at 2:01 pmMaranda, Congratulations on your pregnancy!!
I know exactly what you mean about the “belly blub” that hangs around for 6-12 months post partum. Hell, I’m still trying to get rid of mine 18 months post partum!
I would say dress for the figure you know you have. If you’re usually an hourglass, you can go back to wearing your normal clothes as soon as they fit. Tops with empire waists and baby doll tops can help hide your belly. I also loved to wear high waisted jeans, so your belly doesn’t hang over the top of your pants. I preferred NYDJ Tummy Tuck jeans to hide the belly blub. You can look great wearing jeans and suck in that extra few inches around the middle so no one sees it. Another awesome option is shapewear. You can get shaping shorts that help tuck your belly in a bit or consider an awesome shaping tank you can wear all the time like a Yummie Tummie tanks. They even have a nursing top now too! http://www.yummietummie.com/nursing-t-top.html
If you accentuate your assets, no one will notice your flaws!
Hope this helps!! Let me know if you have any other questions.

January 20th, 2009 at 3:34 pmOkay…..clothes shopping has always been difficult for me. The older I get the harder it is to find pants, skirts, etc… I had a baby 10 months ago via C-section. As a result, I have a tummy pooch that I have not been able to get rid of, although I weigh less than I did pre-pregnancy. I have a round behind, full breasts (we’ll see if they are still full once my baby is weaned–haha), and a defined waist. I have always had a defined waste no matter how I weighed, but I also have broad shoulders.
What shape am I? Here are my measurements:
shoulders– 47
chest– 42
waist– 35
hips– 42.25
thighs (each around)– 25.5Help! I am making it my mission to bring sexy back in the ‘09—haha!!!

18. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
January 20th, 2009 at 3:44 pmHi Cassandra!
I think you are a cross between Hourglass and Apple. You could dress your body for either.
I know all about the undying belly pooch… I am almost down to my pre-preggo weight and it’s still sitting there, 18 months post partum. I’ve found the best thing for hiding it in shapewear and NYDJ Tummy Tuck jeans. The NYDJ jeans can be expensive, but WELL WORTH IT. Once you know which size you wear, you can buy them on eBay for a lot less, but I recommend going into your local Nordstrom and trying them on first. You won’t be disappointed.
Always accentuate your thin waist. You are lucky to have a defined waist so use it to your advantage to drawn attention away from other parts of your body that you may not be totally happy with.
A-line skirts and at-the-waist jeans are great for defining the hourglass shape.
Let me know if you have any more questions. I’d be happy to help!

25. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
February 15th, 2009 at 12:02 pmKate,
You seem to be a pear shape. Be careful with pencil skirts. I would recommend non-full a-line skirts and it should end at the skinniest part of your leg, usually right above the knee or at the knee.
Avoid tulip skirts or anything that gets smaller at the bottom and is full through the hips. This will accentuate the fullness of your bottom half, which you want to avoid. It’s all about balance. Please let me know if you have any more questions!

February 20th, 2009 at 1:05 pmHi there,
I am 36 (5′4) and I have always been considered to have a cute curvy small frame…but at 35 I gained 10 lbs in the course of 1 year……my husband thinks I look more “womanly” at 137 v 127 and says that I am his lil’ “brick house”. My measurements are:
34 – D (bust)
28 – (waist)
39 – (hips)I am trying to figure out what type of clothing would be appropriate..yet still sexy and my style. I am trying to camouflage my hippy and big thigh appearance…what do you suggest?
-
27. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
February 20th, 2009 at 1:50 pmHi Tanya,
From your measurements it sounds like you have a lovely body! I would but you in the pear shaped category if you feel the need to hide your hips and thighs.
Stick to jeans and pants that fit comfortably through the waist and hips and go straight down from the widest part of your hips. You want a straight line all the way down to balance your proportions.
Skirts and dresses should hit at or right above the knee. Look for a-lines and avoid anything that gets smaller towards your knees. Be careful with pencil skirts. If you feel comfortable and sexy wearing them, by all means go for it! You can look classy while still showing off your curves.
Let me know if if you have any more questions. I’d be happy to help!

February 22nd, 2009 at 12:55 amI am having trouble figuring out what one I am. I have:
33″ bust
24″ waist
32″ hips
I think I am a hourglass, and then I think I’m an apple…. I don’t really have a big bust and my back is toned, but the area where you measure is way wide and I have wide shoulders. also, the part right after the narrowest part of your waist goes way out and is a little bit wider looking than my actual hips. I am 16 and haven’t started my period yet, but have all the other signs of puberty other than large breasts. I am not sure if my lower “waist” is so wide to balance future hips that are coming in or not, so would that make me an hourglass? or an apple.

45. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
June 18th, 2009 at 3:31 pm@44 I would say Apple shape, but that would depending on what your mid-section is like. You may want to dress for an apple shape.
Choose tops that don’t accentuate your breasts. Choose skirts that flare out or are fully to add balance to your figure. Wide leg pants and dresses with fuller skirts are best. When you wear shorts, tuck loose shirts into your shorts to create more of a waistline. Even though your hips are small, don’t wear small, tight bottoms because this will make you look top-heavy.
Let me know if you need more tips!!

47. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
June 18th, 2009 at 3:58 pmYeah I would still go with my previous suggestions. You want to try to make your hips look bigger. (I have the opposite problem!) I would wear blousey shirts tucked into a-line, knee-length skirts as a staple outfit. This will make it look like you have a waist and the fullness of the skirt will balance out your top half.
If you need clothing suggestions, i can find some items for you. Just let me know.

July 17th, 2009 at 2:20 amHi,
I’ve been trying to figure out my body shape for sometime, but I just don’t know for sure because I don’t really think i seem to fit in any of the catagories very well. You seem like an expert so maybe you could help me. I’m 16 and 5′8.
My measurements are:
37″ bust size(34C)
24″ waist
36″ hips
and about 23″ thighs
Like I said i’m not quite sure what shape I am I’ve been told I’m an hourglass but I don’t think my hips look curvy enough. So i’m I’m not very sure. But thank you very much. -

July 17th, 2009 at 11:01 am@56 Yes, you are definitely an Hourglass. You have more than a 10″ difference between your bust and your waist and again between your waist and your hips. Plus, you have slim legs. I think you are perfectly proportioned!
You can wear pretty much whatever you want. Normally I would tell you to be careful wearing skinny jeans, but you are so tall, I don’t think you have to worry about it.
Let me know if I can help you with anything else darling!!

July 21st, 2009 at 4:37 pm@59 You are pear shaped, but you might be able to get away with wearing some outfits for hourglass figures if you’re careful to balance out your hips!
@60 You are hourglass, but you should heed some of the advice for pear shaped girls.
@61 Would need to know you’re hip measurements to make a proper judgment. From what I see though, I would lean more towards pear shaped. I had similar measurements before I lost 20 pounds. I was wearing sz 10 jeans too and I was definitely pear shaped. So I would check out the advice on the site here for dressing pear shaped bodies.

July 22nd, 2009 at 5:31 pm@63 I would say Hourglass on the verge of being Apple Shaped. Do you gain weight in your stomach and love handle area?
Wear belts at the smallest part of your waist to define your waist more and give you more of an hourglass figure.

66. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
July 22nd, 2009 at 10:28 pm@65 I’m 5′3″ and weigh 119lbs. If you are worried about your shape getting out of hand, I’d try to keep it around 120lbs and do some yoga to help slim your stomach. If you gain weight in your stomach first, then it should be easier to lose it there without losing all over. Especially if you do exercises targeted for slimming and toning your tummy.
Carbs can make you bloated and mushy in the middle. Try the Atkins diet for like a month and see if you get the results you’re looking for.
Hope that helps!

72. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
July 27th, 2009 at 4:43 pm@70 I would say round shaped, because you don’t have a lot of difference between your chest, waist and hips.
You probably need to lose a little bit of weight (just guessing) and meanwhile, I would focus on defining your waist. Wearing a belt at the smallest part of your waist accentuates your waist giving you more of the hourglass shape your aiming for.

76. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
August 6th, 2009 at 1:06 pm@75 At first thought I would have said apple for the broad shoulders, but if fitting jeans is your problem, you may be closer to pear shaped.
You are probably somewhere in between. A special hourglass with unique qualities.
At 5′5″ and only 110lbs (lucky girl!) you can wear whatever you want, as long as you make sure to balance your top and bottom half.
I have the same problem with jeans. If the waist fits, the hips, butt and thighs are too tight. And if the hips butt and thighs fit, then the waist gaps more than a belt could help. I recommend you try PZI Jeans or Little In The Middle. Both brands are tailored for this specific “problem”.

For the “belly blub” try a Yummie Tummie tank. You can wear it under anything, or by itself. It has light compression around the midsection that holds things in for a smooth look.

August 8th, 2009 at 8:24 pmHello all
I’m so glad I came across this site! I always had the hardest time finding clothes that fit and flatter. I used to describe my body type as an athletic hourglass shape because I was small framed with a little bit of curves, small waist with full breasts and bottom. Once I hit my mid 20’s all of that changed–it’s like everything I ate stuck to me and I just kind of filled out all over.
I’m now 28, 5′5 and weigh 175 lbs. My measurements are: 42 chest DDD, 34 waist, 44 hips and 21 thighs. I’m also like Kealia when it comes to the hip measurement–it mostly comes from the rear. I have difficulty finding jeans that fit and finding tops are always a challenge. Could you help me determine my body type? Plus any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Helina

Are you looking to lose weight or are you happy with yourself right now? Since you are still young, you can easily lose weight if you diet and exercise. This will also help you avoid health problems later in life.
Because you still have good proportions and ratios, I would say you have a large hourglass figure.
For your particular figure, I would recommend having 2 or 3 knee-length A-Line skirts, loose blouses that you tuck in and wear a belt if the skirt allows. That should be your staple outfit. This would be the most flattering.
When you need to wear jeans, I recommend trying brands PZI Jeans or Little In The Middle jeans. Both brands are tailored for gals with big butts! I think you’ll find both brands will fit you much better that other brands. You can also try Right Fit Jeans from Lane Bryant.
Even though you have an hourglass figure, I would still check out the recommendations for Pear Shaped bodies because of your larger behind. Which I might add, there is nothing wrong with a big but!! (I have one myself) You just have to know how to dress it to show it off at it’s best.

August 8th, 2009 at 10:23 pmThank you so much for your quick reply!
Yes, I am definitely open to losing some weight–at least 45lbs. I forgot to add that I was on the Pill and medication for anxiety but am no longer taking any of them because of side effects. Anyway, I think that these *might* have contributed to the rapid weight gain in the past two years–along with just getting older and maybe my metabolism is slowing down. :/ I’m sorry if that was TMI. Anyway, I like my shape, but I just feel that I’m carrying too much weight for my frame.
I tend to lose weight quickly in my arms and legs which are shapely and most of the weight is in my chest (I went up 2 cup sizes) and bottom. I also wanted to add that I’m really short waisted–I have a short upper body and long legs. For some reason, anything tucked in looks really funny on me. Other than that, thank you so much for your styling tips and brand recommendations. I look forward to reading your recommendations for losing some weight and in the meantime I’ll continue to find some flattering fashionable clothing for my current shape.
Thanks,
Helina
P.S. I’m actually 5′6 not 5′5.

waist 32
hips 40
thighs 22
What shape am i and am i heading the right direction for my height?
Thanks! -
81. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
August 9th, 2009 at 12:41 pm@80. Ashton, I think atm you have a straight body shape (sometimes called rectangle or ruler).
You have the most common body type of all. Over 45% of American women have a Straight body shape. This means that your hips and bust are balanced and your waist is not very defined. You probably have a bottom that is more flat than round. You tend to gain weight in your torso first and you may have to battle “muffin tops”. Your lower legs are probably shapely and one of your best assets, am I right?
If you are trying to lose weight, I would concentrate on doing tummy slimming exercises. Consider yoga or Crunchless Abs
Jackets with a wide collar, princess or structured sleeves, a nipped-in waist and flared bottom will help make your waist look smaller and give you more of an “hourglass” appearance. Choose jackets that end at the hip bone. Add a belt for a more dramatic effect and really make the waist look smaller. Off the shoulder or wide-neck tops enhance the shoulders, making your waist appear smaller. Add a wide belt and padded bra for more dramatic curves.
Let me know if you need more help!

August 9th, 2009 at 5:35 pmHi

shoulders 40
bust 38 (32G bra size)
waist 29
Hips 40Not sure if I am an hourglass or pear. Would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks.
-
83. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
August 9th, 2009 at 6:00 pm@82 Mhairi, I think you are most likely a Pear Shape.
Pear is very close to Hourglass, you just have slightly larger hips and thighs, perhaps a larger butt as well. It’s all good as long as you steer clear of skinny jeans and other tight pants. Bootcut and straight leg jeans will be best for you. When trying on new pants, choose materials with a little bit of stretch and make sure they fit your hips and go straight down from there. You don’t want pants to follow your curves too closely. Straight lines will look more flattering on you.
Be careful with pencil or straight skirts. A-line skirts that hit at or right above the knee would be best. Same with dresses. If you are under 5′5″ don’t wear any dresses or skirts that are any longer than 1/2 inch below your knee. It will make you appear short and wide.
Try wearing slimming tanks like Yummie Tummie, tucked into your jeans or trousers. You can wear them under any tops you choose and it will help create a smooth, sleek look for all your outfits.

Please can you tell me what my body type is i am 5′1 and 30 years of age my weight is 55 kg (8/1/2) stones? please see below measurements;
shoulders 39″
chest 35″
waist 28″
hips 37
thighs 21.5Many thanks
-
85. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
August 9th, 2009 at 10:20 pm@84 Lara, I think you probably have a Straight Body type that is a little fuller.
Where do you gain weight first? I suspect in your tummy and abdomen area. I think if you could lose a little bit of weight, you would be an hourglass figure. Your waist would be slimmer and you may find it easier to dress.
You are 5′1″ and 120lbs (55kg). Your ideal weight range is 105 – 120 lbs. (49 – 55 kg.) So you are within your ideal weight range.
Follow the guidelines for dressing an Hourglass figure.
For tops, choose shirts that nip in at the waist or wear a belt over your top to define your waist more. Off the shoulder or wide-neck tops enhance the shoulders, making your waist appear smaller. Add a wide belt and padded bra for more dramatic curves. Look for shirts with embellishments around the bust and shoulders with a fitted waist.
For pants and jeans, you can choose boot cut or flared jeans with a low to mid rise waist. Choose dresses and skirts with an A-line or fullness that comes at or right above the knee. A fitted or belted waist on both skirts and dresses will create curves.
Let me know if you need more help or suggestions!

August 10th, 2009 at 1:28 pm@86 Sami, I would normally say Pear Shaped, but I’m leaning more towards Hourglass shape for you.
Your measurements are very similar to mine. I would recommend dressing for an Houglass Shape for your bottom half.
When it comes to tops you must have a hard time because of your small breasts. Only wear padded bras and this help create balance. Choose tops that accentuate the bustline. Empire waist with ruching around the breasts, embellishments or ruffles will also help to create balance.
You can probably wear straight leg or skinny jeans. I would avoid flare leg jeans.

August 25th, 2009 at 2:37 pmOh, my wonderful Fashionable Housewife… I cannot tell you how amazing I think it is that you’ve taken the time to work up this guide -AND then answer as many comments as you can! This brings me hope, for I, too, am mystified by these various methods of determining body shape.
When I was younger (ie: before I gained some weight), I used to be referred to as possessing the hourglass figure. Though my weight gain has almost been worked off, my body still doesn’t feel like my own. My current measurements are…
shoulders- 36.25 (ish. slightly awkward to measure on your own)
bust- 34
ribcage- 29.25
natural waist- 28
hipbone- 35.5
widest point at hips- 39
Now… I’ve used body shape calculators that completely ignore the fact that shoulders are part of your shape. I see that my measurement for my shoulders still appear to suggest I’m a pear, but it doesn’t say “my back is shapely and I have a bum!” To add to this, when I gained my weight, it seemed mostly evenly distributed (belly first, then bum and hips, thighs, and upper arms). Even after my gain, I would be considered really slender because my face, neck, and lower arms and legs never hinted that I gained.
Now, half the time I see pear and the other I see hourglass (probably based on where I’m emphasizing in my mind). I would very much appreciate it for a nice, objective view. I can also provide previous measurements to reflect where my weight gain/loss has occurred.
Thanks! -
99. The Fashionable Housewife Says:
August 26th, 2009 at 8:51 pm@98 Milayna,
You may have an hourglass shape when you are thinner, but right now you may be a small Apple shaped. People with apple shaped bodies tend to gain weight in their belly and abdomen area first and also tend to have “muffin tops”.
Pear shaped bodies usually have small waists and large hips, thighs, and butt. When gaining weight, it appears first in the thighs and butt.
Let me know if this sounds accurate and we can go from there…

August 27th, 2009 at 8:57 pm@100 Suzanna,
You most likely have a Slim or Athletic Shape, also known as Rectangular.
Your measurements sound great for your height and weight. If you gain a little bit of weight, (5-10lbs) you’ll probably be an hourglass shape.
For now, you can wear pretty much anything you want. Because you are so petite, I would steer clear of maxi dresses, long skirts (anything longer than right below the knee), bulky materials or big knits, or anything with very large prints. You don’t want to get lost in too much material or giants prints.

You are definitely an Hourglass. You have approx 10″ between each measurement.
A rule of thumb to all, your hip measurement should be about the same or bigger than your bust. Your waist measurement should be 8″ or more less than your bust or hip measurements. If they are, you are most likely and hourglass shape.

106. holly Says:
August 29th, 2009 at 1:08 amI am trying to figure out if I am an hourglass or pear. I have characteristics of both.
My measurements are 37 bust( 34C bra)- 27/28 waist – 37 hips.
I also have really broad shoulders (Looks like 16″ across) which balance my my big butt. Also my vertical measurements are equal from the waist line up and down. I have thin to medium bones.People tend not to notice when I gain weight. However I do.
I am about 20 pounds overweight at 5′5 – 145 pounds age 30. I feel much of this weight goes to my rear, thighs, arms, breasts, love handles & only a little to my tummy.I feel my butt is my worst feature as I have saddlebags, and it seems too driven by gravity and “long”.
Though men tell me they love curves large breasts and large butt, women seems to only envy my curved tiny waist and breasts.I feel at this weight -the only clothes that truely look good on me are 50’s narrow waisted dresses which seem a little too feminine to wear to work without men staring at my curves every second.
When I buy pants if they fit well in the hips and are lower waisted with legs that flare out it makes me look more balanced or straight legged pants that are higher waisted if i wear some shapewear. The waist is usually not small enough in pants I try on.
Anyhow- just curious what you think my shape really is, as it seems really different than the flat chested narrow shoulder pear & the totally symmetrical hourglass??
Also- I would love a good pant suggestion as I need them desperately for work but am so uncomfortable with my behind??Thank you!

August 29th, 2009 at 6:48 pm@106 Holly,
People with a pear shaped body can look as curvy and wonderful as people with an hourglass shaped body.
For your height and age, according to medical standards, your ideal weight range is 126 – 138.6 lbs. (57.3 – 63 kg.) which means you are marginally overweight by 6.4 lbs. Not a big deal and is completely up to you whether or not you want to lose weight or if you are comfortable at your current size.
Usually people with an hourglass shaped body will turn into either Pear shaped or Round shaped when they gain weight. Sounds like you are leaning more towards a pear shape right now. If you want an hourglass shape, you probably only need to lose 5 – 10 pounds.
I know that finding pants can be a challenge. For a year after I gave birth to my first child, I weighed 138 and was a pear shape. I had so much trouble finding pants that fit both my waist and hips/butt at the same time.
If you are looking for work pants like trousers, I recommend the following pants…

Not Your Daughter’s Jeans® Tummy Tuck® Straight Leg Knit Pants

Not Your Daughter’s Jeans® Tummy Tuck® Basic Bootcut Stretch Jeans (on sale!)NYDJ Tummy Tuck brand has the most amount of stretch and will give you a much better fit.

You can also try tucking a blouse or cami into a simple black pencil skirt or a-line skirt and wearing a little jacket or blazer on top. This will still show your curves without being too sexy.

August 30th, 2009 at 10:08 pmTo be honest, Holly, you don’t sound as if you are overweight. I am 4′9″ and 120 lbs and according to my doctor, I was 20lbs overweight at 143. So, you sound like your at a normal weight.
Usually and hourglass has balanced measurements at the top and bottom, but the natural waist generally has about 9+ inches less than the measurements at the widest part of your hips or bust.
I have a 38″ chest, 38″ hips, and a 25″ waist. According to most of what I’ve found online, I have an hourglass shape.
You may have the classic hourglass. You sound like you’ve got great measurements and decent height/weight. So goodluck and have fun!!!

It sounds like you are probably between a Pear Shape and a Round Shape.
Tuck skirts in and use belts to help define your waist more.
Let me know if you need outfit suggestions!

September 6th, 2009 at 10:22 pmHi,
I am 24 years old with 1 child. I am about 5′4 and go between 115-120. 33/34-25-37/38. I have a athletic build but I think I look petite. The 37/38 is mostly due to my butt it sticks out like a bubble due to my hugh arch in my back lol. I can never fit pants around my waist without a belt and when I turn to the side its not a S because my butt sticks out more then my breast which are not big. I never felt like I had hips becasue they dent in then come out at the bottom. Which you can see when I stand straight, certain pants make them come out more. When I gain it goes to my butt and thighs from when I was 130. The hips coming out just come recently while I’ve been frequently exercising. I’m confused!!! Plus I have somewhat broad shoulders.

September 6th, 2009 at 10:33 pmooo I forgot to ask what do you think my shape is? I seriously have no clue. Also what are some good pants ideas for me because unless sometimes I may have to get them bigger to fit my butt however they fit weird in the front and may even crunch a little with my belt.

September 15th, 2009 at 10:15 amHi! I’ve been wondering about my shape for a while. I think I’m a ruler, while my husband believes I’m an hourglass. My measurements are 33-24.5-33.5. I’m 5′6, 110 lbs, long torso and long legs, both slender. I usually have a flat bottom but when i put on just 5 pounds it goes straight to my hips or chest, or both, making me look quite curvy. I lose weight easily, build muscle easily. which am i, ruler or hourglass?

I have some belly fat and “love handles.” I am trying to work out more and eat healtier. I have been wearing just t-shirts and jeans. I am trying to dress more fashionable but do not like anything on me. Any suggestions as to what style of clothing will flatter my body? Thanks!
