A mattress protector keeps your mattress as clean and hygienic as possible. When we sleep, our bodies perspire, letting out natural body oils. It is therefore far healthier that a washable protector soaks up your body oils, rather than letting them seep through to your mattress.
There are a range of different protector products on the market, which offers the same basic benefits, along with their specialties. This article will take you through the different types, and make a case for why you should invest in a mattress topper โ depending on your needs.

Anti-Allergy
Anti-Allergy mattress protectors offer protection for your mattress, and protection for yourself against your mattress. If you suffer from common nighttime allergies, then this might be the protector for you.
As well as relieving allergy symptoms which may be caused by your mattress, it can help protect against external causes of allergies โ such as dust mites and pollen. Whilst it is recommended you use advised anti-allergy tablets/medicine in conjunction with the protector, the combination will leave you ready for a great nightโs sleep!
For a quality anti-allergy mattress protector, look for a product approved by the British Allergy Foundation. This will ensure the product does actually protect against allergies.

Comfort Feel
Certain mattress protectors offer an additional layer of comfort to your bed โ allowing for a better night sleep. These mattress protectors are usually more expensive than other protectors, as they are made from 100% cotton. Cotton is a natural material which offers a soft-touch, breathable feel. Other mattress protectors are made using a combination of polyester and cotton, meaning they are less comfortable but offer similar protection.
For a quality comfort feel mattress protector, look for products with a 2-3 year guarantee. Whilst they will almost certainly outlast their warranty, it offers peace of mind that you are purchasing a quality product.

Waterproof
Waterproof mattress protectors offer additional protection against spills and accidents โ allowing you to sleep peacefully knowing your memory foam mattress is protected! Depending on the brand you choose to purchase, protectors can range from a plastic sheet placed directly on top of the mattress, to more comfier options with plush quilted covers that provide extra padding and comfort. We would recommend investing in the latter choice. Whilst these may cost slightly more, the added comfort contributes to a more peaceful night’s sleep. If you have a copper infused mattress like the Layla Mattress, you will want to protect your investment without hindering the benefits of the mattress. I personally recommend a mattress protector that is both waterproof and cushioned. It works great on my Layla Mattress!

Pillow Protectors
Whilst they are not technically mattress protectors, pillow protectors offer similar benefits to yourself and your pillows. If you sleep with your mouth open or suffer from nighttime allergies, then pillow protectors are perfect for you.
Most pillow protectors offer relief against night-time allergy symptoms, which can be more effective than their mattress counterparts. This is because your head is nestled into the pillow, allowing it to catch elements in the air which are impacting your sleep.
Pillow protectors also protect against moisture which may seep out of your nose or mouth whilst you sleep, prolonging the life of your pillows!
