Using Technology to Save Money At Home

our house 2012

There probably isn’t a homeowner alive who couldn’t benefit from saving money around the house but few are aware of the fact that today’s technology provides one of the easiest ways to save money in a number of ways. Typically, you are going to look at energy efficiency but there are other ways in which smart technology can provide savings as well. Let’s look at a few of them.

Automation

Most often the real problem with wasting energy is the result of human error. We forget to turn the lights off. We forget to turn the water off when sprinkling the lawn in summer months. We forget to turn the coffee pot off and if it can be forgotten, we forget it! No, we aren’t a society of absent minded fools. We are simply too busy to keep everything in our heads at the same time. Automation is key to saving money because we can automate everything from shutting windows to opening them back up again to allow fresh air in on warm days. You’ve never heard of automated window controls? Click here to see the latest technology on automated electric window controls. If it can be automated, technology has found a way!

Smart Meters

Then there are smart meters that can literally help you control the amount of energy you use daily or even hourly. These can be set to any limits you desire and can also help you plan future usage. By giving hourly reports as to how much energy you use on a given day at a specific time of year, you can plan your budget accordingly going forward into the next year. Smart meters, however, have caused some amount of controversy in the press because there are those who feel the government is using this technology to keep tabs on its citizens. Is it true? So far there is no evidence to substantiate this but there will always be those who buck advances in technology because they fear what they can’t understand.

Smart Thermometers

Not only are there smart thermometers for climate control with your HVAC system in the home but there are smart thermometers for your hot water system as well. These allow you to set temperatures and times of day when they are to run and in the long term, can save hundreds of pounds each year on the cost of heating your home and/or your water. A smart thermostat/thermometer on your heating system in conjunction with electric (automated) windows, you can expect a huge amount of savings each and every season of the year.

While technology offers convenience to the average household, it does so much more than that by offering substantial savings on the cost of energy and water. If you own your home, making it cost effective to install this technology, smart meters, smart thermostats and automated appliances are where it’s at when it comes to saving money. Take time to check out which type of technology would best serve your personal needs and this time next year you can choose where to spend all that money you’ve saved. A holiday would be nice!
