Tour of Our Homeschool Room & Home Decor

This summer, we redid our living room. I said “goodbye” to our yucky Berber carpeting, and “hello” to nice, clean laminate flooring. We divided our large living room into two separate spaces. The larger space remained the living room/play room, while the small space became our new homeschool room space. I was so done with doing school work on the kitchen table… It made eating dinner at the table near impossible on some days and I really wanted my kids to remember us all sitting down, saying grace, and eating dinner together, so the homeschool room had to move.

Now that we had a permanent spot to do school, we had to decorate it! Arguably, that was the best part. It’s not a huge area but I think we figured out how to maximize space in this little nook.

Before we got started with the redecorating, we moved our Carson Bookcases to each side of the fireplace and made it a focal part of the homeschool room. Then we moved our old dining room table into the middle of the homeschool room.

After that, we had to figure out three important details: comfortable seating, lighting that was good for reading and studying, and a functional, fashionable rug to protect the floor in the new space.

1.Mid-Century Modern Eames Style Chairs

We needed chairs that were both comfortable and stylish. I definitely wanted white chairs (yes, I know I have children, but I love the way they look). I wanted to make sure they were also easy to clean, and thanks to Mr. Clean magic erasers, we have had consistently beautiful looking chairs. I love that the chairs are curved; it seems to keep my children more comfortable. The chairs also look good, no matter what decorations we have in the room. They are modern, have clean lines and just look great with everything. I’m so glad we got these Eames Style chairs for cheap from Amazon. Hands down, a great purchase and would highly recommend them!

2. Mason LED Arc Floor Lamp

We needed light on that side of our living room. Prior to redoing the living room, I used that area to nurse my baby to sleep, and I didn’t need more than a Himalayan salt lamp. Now that it is a homeschool room, I needed to get a light that was both freestanding and would benefit my children’s eyes. My husband definitely did not want to drill more holes in the ceiling to add more recessed lights so I had to look for alternatives. The Mason LED Arc Floor Lamp is absolutely PERFECT and exactly what I was looking for! It is huge, bright, very adjustable, and hovers right over our school table, which is perfect for our children. We can start school early in the morning before the sun shines in the window on that side of the house.

The light arrived in a smaller box than I expected, but was surprisingly heavy due to the large marble base. It was easy to put together, the instructions were very easy to follow, and I put the whole thing together by myself in less than half an hour. I took a quick video of the process which I will show you guys later!

3. Machine Washable Math Rug

Since I went with the white chairs, I decided I would get a neutral rug. I considered getting one with a design but didn’t want something too busy. One of my favorite cloth diaper prints was the Bumgenius Albert, so when I saw Lorena Canals Math Rug from her Back To School Collection, I knew I had to have it. It is perfect for a toddler room, and it looks great in our homeschool room. I love how soft it is! I watched my children rock their feet back and forth over the soft carpet all day. I didn’t say anything, because it made them surprisingly calm. I think they also liked knowing all the different details and math problems on the rug. It made them feel smart. 

Best of all, this rug is… (drumroll please)… MACHINE WASHABLE! Yes, that’s right. You can roll this puppy up and shove it right in your washing machine. I use Tide Free & Gentle because my kids have sensitive skin and since I got this rug, all the kids just love laying all over it, so I use the same laundry detergent that I use on all our clothes.

I highly recommend Lorena Canals machine washable rugs. They are incredibly beautiful, very high quality, and it seems like this rug is going to last us a very long time. I very impressed and can’t wait to add another Lorena Canals rug to my home. 

Another minor detail I love about our homeschool room is our pencil holder. I know, I know… such a small piece, but it’s SO much nicer than the separate jars we used to use that looked so messy all over the table. This 3-hole desk utensil organizer from Hearth & Hand is neat, chic, and keeps everything organized. I love it.
