Summer has felt on our doorstep for the past few weeks as we have been blessed with an unseasonably warm spring. This looks set to continue and hopefully it will last through the entire summer season meaning we can all make great use of our outdoor backyard space.
For the seasoned gardener, knowing what you are doing is easy – you more than likely have a set routine that you follow each year. But for the rest who might be novices, here are our top 5 gardening tips for the summer (and they aren’t just about being green-fingered!). Read on to find out what they are…
- Plant to the season

It’s all well and good deciding you would like a crop of tulips in a corner or pansies in a border. Perhaps you want a veg patch that will allow you to cook seasonal food when the time is right. But unfortunately, it is not as easy as just deciding what you want to plant and doing it – not if you actually want them to flower! Do a little research to see when your preferred items should be planted and you’re much more likely to have them be a beautiful success!
- Ensure your items are secure and handy
One of the barriers to having a nice garden can be the sheer hassle of getting tools in and out of an overflowing garage, or not wanting to use them since they have gone all rusty after being left out. Why not invest in some outdoor storage in the form of a shed? Online retailers such as Aston Sheds UK sell a variety of types to suit your garden and budget, from cheaper plastic sheds to more expensive loglap wooden ones. Talk to them to see what will work best in your space.
- Keep on top of your lawn maintenance

We get it. No one wants to waste their whole weekend mowing the lawn. But procrastinating mowing it and letting the grass get tall makes the job much harder and longer when you finally get around to it. Keep on top of it so when the kids go out to play, they won’t cut their legs on the grass and get bit by ticks that carry Lyme disease. If you keep the grass short, you won’t need to toil and sweat for several hours in order to enjoy your garden and have the best yard on the block.
- Tidy up your space
Similar to the lawn maintenance, nothing is likely to put you off from sitting outside more than a messy area. It certainly wouldn’t be a place you would want to entertain guests either so give it a big tidy up and then keep on top of it. Even just sweeping pathways and patios and moving a few weeds and bits from borders can make a huge difference. This is one of the most important gardening tips to follow since it makes a big impact.
- Encourage natural wildlife
A garden can be a habitat to a whole host of creatures and who wouldn’t want to enjoy watching them in their own area? Find out what kind of thing might attract birds, hedgehogs, and other critters and build them this summer to entice them to you. A beautiful rustic bird bath is a great place to start.
There’s plenty of time to get your garden in good shape for summer and plenty of things you can do through the summer months to improve it. Just follow our gardening tips, decide what you’re after, and get going!
