Labor Day is right around the corner, which means I only have a little time left to try Summer’s most controversial trend. Iโm talking about one of 2009’s most love-it-or-hate-it fashions: the romper. Recently, I was lunching with friends, and when the subjectย turned to rompers, everyone almost gagged. One very stylish friend called it a โonesie,โ which is kind of true.
They were so adamant that I didn’t admit I (kind of) secretly like rompers. I find them really fun and carefree, but since Iโm over 30, I typically try for a more sophisticated look. ย โHoping to cut algebra class and go for a snow cone,โ just isn’t the statement I want to make. ย But is it possible to wear a romper with sophistication?
With certain pieces, itโs definitely possible. I found this patterned Nannette Lapore on sale at Neimanโs. Itโs fabulous, but even discounted to $162, itโs more than Iโm willing to spend on this trend.
So I think Iโll start with this romper from Macyโs.
On its own, itโs too youthful looking, but at $17.99 the price is right. With some dedicated accessorizing, I think I could work with it. ย And since I’m saving so much money on the romper, I can use my budget on versatile investment pieces to go with it. ย
First, I need a belt to mitigate that “onesie” effect. ย I love all the waist-defining options out there right now, but the slouchy quality of this romper calls for something different, like this double-wrap belt from Banana Republic. ย ย
It’s not on sale (good belts hardly ever are!), but at $49.50, it’s significantly less than many high-end versions. ย The wrap styling and studs are right on trend for Fall 09, so I know I would get good use out of it.ย
I’d also make it more of an outfit by adding a shrug or bolero. ย I have a wonderful black shrug from White House / Black Market that would work perfectly. ย I bought it a few seasons ago, but it’s similar to this one:

Lastly, I’d pair it with the right shoe. ย To avoid trend overkill, I’d stick with something classic. ย This elegant Cole Haan slide is just right, and it’s part of Nordstrom’s big anniversary sale. ย
Now through August 2nd, it’s on sale for $109.90. ย Because it’s strappy and has a small heel, it will really lengthen the leg, which is key to successfully wearing a romper. ย
And Voila! ย If you should see me romping about next month, that’s how I’ll be doing it. ย But will I really take the plunge with this trend? ย Maybe after two margaritas or tenย hours on the stairmaster…
