To Romp or Not to Romp…

Labor Day is right around the corner, which means I only have a little time left to try Summer’s most controversial trend. I’m talking about one of 2009’s most love-it-or-hate-it fashions: the romper. Recently, I was lunching with friends, and when the subject turned to rompers, everyone almost gagged. One very stylish friend called it a “onesie,” which is kind of true.

They were so adamant that I didn’t admit I (kind of) secretly like rompers. I find them really fun and carefree, but since I’m over 30, I typically try for a more sophisticated look.  “Hoping to cut algebra class and go for a snow cone,” just isn’t the statement I want to make.  But is it possible to wear a romper with sophistication?

With certain pieces, it’s definitely possible. I found this patterned Nannette Lapore on sale at Neiman’s. It’s fabulous, but even discounted to $162, it’s more than I’m willing to spend on this trend.

So I think I’ll start with this romper from Macy’s.

Macys blue

On its own, it’s too youthful looking, but at $17.99 the price is right. With some dedicated accessorizing, I think I could work with it.  And since I’m saving so much money on the romper, I can use my budget on versatile investment pieces to go with it.

First, I need a belt to mitigate that “onesie” effect.  I love all the waist-defining options out there right now, but the slouchy quality of this romper calls for something different, like this double-wrap belt from Banana Republic.

BR belt

It’s not on sale (good belts hardly ever are!), but at $49.50, it’s significantly less than many high-end versions.  The wrap styling and studs are right on trend for Fall 09, so I know I would get good use out of it.

I’d also make it more of an outfit by adding a shrug or bolero.  I have a wonderful black shrug from White House / Black Market that would work perfectly.  I bought it a few seasons ago, but it’s similar to this one:

Lastly, I’d pair it with the right shoe.  To avoid trend overkill, I’d stick with something classic.  This elegant Cole Haan slide is just right, and it’s part of Nordstrom’s big anniversary sale.

nordstromsandal

Now through August 2nd, it’s on sale for $109.90.  Because it’s strappy and has a small heel, it will really lengthen the leg, which is key to successfully wearing a romper.

And Voila!  If you should see me romping about next month, that’s how I’ll be doing it.  But will I really take the plunge with this trend?  Maybe after two margaritas or ten hours on the stairmaster…
