The Power of a Lipstick: How One Woman’s Words Inspired a National Movement

Sometimes, the simplest advice can spark something extraordinary. Just ask Sheryl Kurland, founder of the nonprofit organization Find Your Fabulosity, whose mission is rooted in a single sentence her mother, Bette Ann Leider, often repeated:

“Sheryl, if you want to feel better, just go put on a little lipstick.”

Bette Ann’s wisdom wasn’t just about beauty—it was about confidence, empowerment, and reclaiming identity. Inspired by her 93-year-old mother’s words, Sheryl Kurland has turned that sentiment into a national movement, providing more than 108,000 brand-new lipsticks to survivors of domestic violence across all 50 states.

A Touch of Color, A Drop of Hope

Find Your Fabulosity has made it their mission to donate new, unopened lipsticks to women’s shelters across the U.S. These lipsticks, generously provided by individuals, beauty brands, and corporate sponsors, are distributed to over 300 shelters nationwide.

For survivors of domestic abuse, something as small as a lipstick can be a symbol of hope—a reminder that they are beautiful, they have a voice, and their lives matter. According to Sheryl, the letters the nonprofit receives from recipients highlight just how meaningful these little tubes of color can be:

“At my lowest point, the lipstick I received from you gave me a drop of hope and a spark of light in a very dark place.”

More Than Makeup—A Fresh Start

Bette Ann Leider, whose words sparked this movement, understands the power of looking in the mirror and seeing your own strength reflected back.

“These women haven’t looked in the mirror in a long time,” says Bette Ann. “They’ve been abused. And now, Sheryl has given them another road to travel, using these lipsticks. It’s a beginning for them.”

For many survivors, a swipe of lipstick can be the first step in rebuilding their confidence—from trying new makeup to changing the colors they wear, and ultimately, rediscovering their personal strength.
