  1. Be aware that this can cause significant itching. I don’t have particularly sensitive skin or any allegeries, but when I used Mederma on my neck scar where I had my thyroid removed it started severely itching and drove me crazy until I could get it all wiped off.

  2. thanks so much for this. my 12 year old just had a couple of moles removed and the scars are making me feel a little guilty. i’m ordering tonight:)

  3. has this really worked on scars? i’ve read an article and it said merderma works as well as vaseline. please share stories if anyone has any. i have some acne scars and stretch maarks i would like to lighten

  4. The active ingredient in Mederma is onion extract – it has anti-inflammatory properties and seem to stimulate some collagen production – on rabbit ears! But it didn’t lead to a difference in scar appearance. This is why buying a product that was tested on animals is bogus – onion extract seems to do diddly for humans.

Scars can take up to TWO YEARS to go through a healing process – and if you keep the wound moist, like with neosporin or petroleum jelly, you will get faster healing and fading than you will with this product. You’ll also skip the dermatitis that Alison experienced.

Silicon gel sheeting, which is what’s used in Curad Scar Therapy patches, is about the only topical scar modification out there, but a lot of people experience skin irritation with it and can’t use it for very long.

  5. I’m unsure about Mederma, so hopefully someone can help me, before I seek out a doctor.
I have a cat at home that still has his claws in. I am not exaggerating when I say, he practically uses my body as his scratching post. I have scratches and scars all over. One scar, in particular, is very large and dark and noticeable. I basically got self conscious about it, so I sought out scar treatments, and found Mederma.
I’ve been using Mederma (topical gel) on my scar for about two weeks now. While it’s too soon to see results (as noted on the product), I have recently been experiencing, not mild, but severe itching, so bad that sometimes I forgo a application of Mederma to apply an anti-itch cream instead. Another unpleasant thing that has happened, as a result of the Mederma, is that the skin around the scar has lightened. I have a dark complexion, so a lighter discolored spot is noticeable on me…just as noticeable as the scar I’m tying to conceal.
I’m at the point where I’m considering giving up on Mederma. I’ve read other reviews that say that redness and itching maybe side effects, but what I’m experiencing is more like a rash that is way bigger than the scar itself, so I’m not sure it’s it even worth it for me to use the product. Will the itching subside after continuous use? And, will my discolored skin repair?
I do have a doctor’s appointment coming up, and I plan on addressing/inquiring about my use of Mederma then. However, if anyone has any information that might help me, I would sincerely appreciate it.
    Thanks much!!

  6. @5 I would stop using it immediately. You are obviously allergic to an ingredient in the Maderma.

Switch to Bio Oil and see how your skin does with that. If you get a reaction from that, use pure Vitamin E oil. Keep applying 2-3x a day.

And for goodness sakes, de-claw your cat!!!

  7. I want to thank The Fashionable Housewife for offering her feedback and for suggesting those great “alternatives” to Mederma! I did consult with my doctor, and she advised me to stop using the product, while assuring me that the itchy rashes I have formed on my skin should be taken care of with any good anti-itch cream.
I think next time I’ll skip the fancy pharmaceuticals, and go for more natural products like cocoa butter.
    Thanks again. :)

  8. I have been using Mederma for a week. I am 33 weeks pregnant and on bed rest so I don’t get out like I used to. I have jumped from 110lbs to 160 in these past months and it is leaving horrible stretch marks on my inner thighs and newly developed love handles.I have had no problems with the gel, I apply 3 times a day. The smell is light, a little does cover alot of skin, and rubs into the skin and not off onto clothes. However, it just started making me itch yesterday, I could not sleep so I applied Cortozone cream on top of it which releived the itch. The stretch marks do appear to be a little lighter than before I began to use this, but according to the label, I have 7 more weeks to go. I will give this product 3 months to hopefully do its job. If not, lemon juice bleaches the skin, I have faded a few freakles with it, I will begin applying that and experimenting with anything until I get the results I am looking for. Good luck to everyone trying this product, I hope you get your dollars worth!

  9. I have a scar on my forehead and on my neck from an anterior cervical discectomy and have been using this for about one to two weeks. The itching does drive my forehead crazy but I am hoping that it helps.
