Unless you’re living in the Sahara desert, where you do not have rain even once a year, rainwater harvesting can be a great way to conserve water. The First step

The first step in Rainwater harvesting is water collection which is achieved by designating sealed areas for the same. The best and generally used area is to have a fixed surface area, like the roof of where you’re staying. You can just use a large container to store the rainwater – the bigger the surface area, the more easier it is to store the rainwater.

Look out for a way to filter the rainwater. These filters can be placed at the collection source or even near the steeple of the tank. This rainwater with the help of pre filters which clean it of large particles gives it bath water quality. This filtered water can again be sieved through an inlet device at the opening of the tank. These sieves can be fine meshes of stainless steel. The function of this device is to stop deposits and residue from coloring the water.

Second step

The second step in harvesting rain water post collection is the storage in tank. You cannot have an underwater tank as a traveler, in the place you are staying. So, just have a container for storing the water after filtration. These can be fabricated from different materials with each having its own advantage. The size of the tank can vary depending on the usage and consumption.

Third step

You do not need to use the rainwater only for drinking purposes. As a traveler, you will not have access to the high quality filtration or tanks you have in homes, so you can be better off using the rain water for other purposes. Typically, the harvested water can be used in washing machines, toilet flushes, garden watering, car cleaning and such.

As a traveler, you can be worried about a lot of things; if you have set up a tent in the mountains, rainwater harvesting can be the right way to go.
