  1. umm… PartY?? Like its 1492?? You mean as a Native American I should be partying for … assimilation??…murder??.. diseases?? and seeing ALL rights and freedoms of the Native Peoples of this Land annhilated??? Oh I see ,,, Nevermind the silent minority they dont’ purchase from Old Navy and you know why?? Because we’re controlled by government agencies and we lost ALL of our rights as a human being back in 1492 .. next time you do a campaign .. THINK .. as a human being not as a controlling manipulative human being otherwise it makes you look like you came over on the MAYFLOWER.

  2. Bitterness is a harmful emotion. Nobody should run around with it, nevermind leave hateful comments on someone’s blog because of it.

Think about how you wouldn’t even have a computer to type on or jobs for an income if it wasn’t for “us” coming over here and creating a country.

  3. Okay i’ve read around and seen people ranting about how horrible it is to say ‘party like it’s 1492!”. how dumb. Old Navy is celebrating a holiday by offering cheap prices on clothes you all know we love! the horror! Sorry to break it to you but w/o that *whispers* life as we know it wouldn’t exist! (butterfly effect heard of it?)

  4. Look Fashionable Housewife and Princess Prep(clearly), when Natives read and see things like this in the media it makes some of us angry, some of us sad. But if you would try to step back and put yourself in the other persons shoes maybe you would realize how insulting it really. Columbus day is celebrated as the “discovery” of America. Implying that he “discovered” America is saying that our existence wasn’t validated until the white man decided so. That makes me sick more than anything. Then, when the first European Americans arrived and were starving and freezing, who was there to help them? To teach them where to gather, how to hunt, how to fish and help them build their homes side by side? The Natives. What do we get in some 20 years in return? Disease, smallpox ridden blankets, our homelands ripped out from under us, 70-90% of our population (this was not war it was flat out assassination of women, children, and elders) wiped out by senseless murder, and countless treaties made with the U.S. federal government promising protection of our lands that will never be acknowledged. Ever heard of termination? Probably not. They don’t want you to read that in your history books. The government wouldn’t want you to know that this country was founded on terrorism, bloodshed and broken treaties. Look it up in government archives, I’m not a bitter Indian. I’m just telling the other side of the story.

So, sure, it’s a sale, that’s cool. Hell, I shop there too. I don’t live in a teepee, I didn’t grow up on a reservation, and I don’t scalp people (Oh P.S. — J. Willard, Secry. [a white man] first coined the term “scalping”, not indigenous peoples). I have nothing against white people for what their forebearers did to mine, but when comments and actions like “Party like it’s 1492” are made, it just looks FLAT OUT RACIST, and THAT makes me not want to like you. So, unless you are racist, don’t make comments like that – it makes you look ignorant and uneducated.

  5. I totally agree with April and Julia. This is a subject that needs to be address and seen from different point of views. There where millions of Natives that were mistreated and punished and put to death. There is so much to say about this topic, but I feel that April said a great deal and I agree with her. There is a difference between ignorance and stupidity (look it up in the dictionary). There are always two sides of the story.

Plus fashionable housewife, Natives already had a respectful county before some white guy came destroyed everything. The had the concept of the number zero, already had concepts of medical procedures, and as well as other great accomplishments. So please check yourself, who ever you are, and learn some true history! Thank You

  6. The thing you all seem to be forgetting is this is a FASHION BLOG!!

I appreciate your point of view and I probably know a lot more than the average American about your situation, as I studied about Native Americans and early America for 2 years in college. So believe me, I feel for you.

But this is not the appropriate place to engage in history debates. Perhaps you could start a blog about this topic so that others can learn more about it. Perhaps a forum might be engaging.

Let me know if you would like help in that venture. But please do not fill the comment section of a fashion blog with history arguments assuming that everyone is ignorant. We only wanted to inform people of a sale at Old Navy, not cause a stir.

    Thank you for your thoughts..
