My Epic At-Home Leg Waxing Fiasco

I’m not a fan of waxing my own legs. In fact, it’s one of my least favorite parts of my personal care routine. I can’t shave all the time though or I get ingrown hairs and razor bumps galore. So, waxing is a must. I used to go to Cassandra Salon and get both legs, bikini area and brows down for around $120. It would last for at least 6-8 weeks though so I felt like it was well worth the price.

Since I had baby number TWO though, I haven’t had time to treat myself to such services….

I look like a hairy mammoth in the winter time and in the summer, I attempt to wax my own legs. It’s the only thing that works for me. I have tried numerous at-home hair removal products from Nair to Nads. Usually my weapon of choice is Veet Cold Pre-Waxed Strips. It costs around $10 a box and usually the one box lasts me to uses, making it quite cost effective. I usually use 2-4 boxes a year.

I received some new products to review from SheaMoisture, one of which was Sugar Wax. I decided to give it a fair trial by doing one leg with the sugar wax and doing the other leg how I usually do it with the Veet Pre-Waxed Strips so I could really get a good comparison of how they measured up against each other.

Well…….

As you can see from the results, one of them is a clear winner…

Not only did it take me MORE than twice as long to wax my legs with the SheaMoisture Sugar Wax, but it left me with a ton of red bumps that turned into pimples the next day. I have NEVER had that happen before. Usually I get maybe one or two small red bumps around my bikini area, maybe a few on my legs, but nothing like this…

It was difficult to spread the wax with the included skinny,wooden popsicle sticks and it took a long time to get it just right before applying the strip. The wax DID stick very well to the hairs but I found that after the first swipe, it didn’t want to pull any more hairs which seemed kind of wasteful since the strips were presumably disposable, but that wasn’t actually noted anywhere in the directions…

I used the SheaMoisture Honey & Black Seed After Shave Regenerative Lotion hoping it would help, but it didn’t. While it was quite moisturizing, it was hard to spread because it was so thick. You have to really work it into your skin or otherwise your skin is left with a white film over it. My skin felt incredibly soft and supple afterwards though, but it didn’t do anything to help with the bumps or redness.

I do not think I will be trying that Sugar Wax again any time soon. I will stick with my Veet Pre-Waxed strips. They aren’t perfect and it’s nothing like going to see my darling girl, Sonia Biddle, at Cassandra Salon, but it’s the best thing I’ve found for hair removal at home.
