Did you know that May is Melanoma Awareness Month? Skin cancer is one of the most common and fastest growing forms of cancer in the USA. In fact, one in every 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Don’t be one of them!
With May being Melanoma Awareness Month, I thought it would be a good time to highlight a couple items that will help keep you safe when you are playing in the sun this summer.
1. Protect Skin With UV Blocking Clothing
BloqUV is based out of Miami, Florida and is a leader in sun protective apparel. The protective apparel in the collection is designed specifically for active adults that spend a lot of time outside doing sports and other outdoor activities.
Their clothing items are designed to block 98% of the sun’s harmful UV rays. All of their fabrics guarantee a minimum of UPF 50 and all items are tested in accordance with American Association of Textile Chemist and Colorists (AATCC) for compliance. Plus, they don’t add any chemicals to their fabrics so the UV protection never washes away with launderings!
Bloq UV has a special passion for bringing fashionable sun protective clothing to market to protect people like you from ever changing global climate.
Their cute tops and bottoms comes in an array of fun, bright colors as well as neutrals like gray, black and white. All of their items are perfect for mixing and matching. Expertly designed with utilitarian pockets hold cash, credit cards, keys, mobile phones and iPods. Best of all, the BloqUV material is moisture-wicking so it will keep you feeling cool during your workout and outdoor activities.
I like Bloq UV because their special material is lightweight so you don’t feel like you are suffocating under layers in the hot sun. Their pieces are cool and comfortable, making them a must-have for an active woman’s wardrobe.

2. Tank Up On Your Vitamin D!
After finding out I had a critically low level of Vitamin D in 2007, I started taking 2,000IU of Vitamin D daily (as suggested by my doctor). Some Vit D supplements make me sick to my stomach, some are big and hard to swallow and yet others seem relatively ineffective making me question their source and potency. Here Comes the Sunโข by HUM Nutrition is my favorite Vitamin D supplement so far because of the small softgels that are easy to swallow, they don’t upset my stomach and I can tell they are working.
Vitamin D deficiency affects many of us. Here Comes the Sunโข is high in Vitamin D3, which is regarded as superior to D2 by many scientists. This vitamin is considered essential for calcium absorption, skin protection, and healthy bones and teeth. Vitamin D3 has also been researched for a variety of benefits including its role in depression and its key role in skin health. This product is gluten free, contains no GMOs, is sustainably sourced, and contains no artificial ingredients. It is recommended by leading nutritionists.

3. Wear Sunscreen During Prolonged Exposure To The Sun
If you are going to out on a boat all day, on the beach or even out in your yard, make sure you dress appropriately and wear sunscreen. I personally do not recommend being a freak about sunscreen and wearing it every single day or putting SPF protection in every single product. However, if you are going to be out in direct sunlight for a prolonged period of time, it’s a good idea to wear sunscreen. We all need a little sunlight in order to be healthy, but you don’t want to burn! So be smart and wear sunscreen when playing outdoor sports or heading to the beach.
Your face is probably the most important thing to protect from the sun, especially if you have light skin like me. (And if you have red hair! Us red heads are the most likely to burn from sun exposure!) Choose a sunscreen that is actually safe to wear on your face like MD Complete Clear Skin Sunscreen SPF 29. I like this one because it’s a non-greasy sunscreen that won’t clog pores. It’s specifically designed for sensitive and blemish-prone skin. Offering both UVA and UVB protection, the Clear Skin Sunscreen contains Vitamin C and Co-Q10 to nourish skin and help support its natural repair process. Perfect for all skin types!
