Home Decor: DIY Uses For Old Windows

Are your neighbors remodeling their old windows? Did you come across a vintage shop selling reusable windows? Then don’t hesitate and grab them all. If you are a DIY lover and want to use your windows creatively, we will list out a few ideas for you.

There is no need to worry about if they have glass or not. Both can be used in a number of ways.

  • The very basic use that comes to mind at first is – using windows as wall photo frame. And not just as a photo frame, they can be hung to add substance to your dull walls. Decorate them with wall paintings or fabric to make them more appealing. Your decoration can be themed around a season or a festival too, for example – Christmas. Hang bells and stars, and your Christmas decoration is extra well done. Using old windows add an ancient tinge to your home.

  • Old windows not only add beauty to your home, but can be used in many other ways that have practical applications. Like if it is wooden, you can use it as a seat for your swing in the garden or use it to make a Doghouse for your lovely pet. They can also be used as a room divider. Or make a changing corner by attaching to windows side by side.

  • Old Windows with glasses can be used to achieve greenhouse effect for your plants. Place all your plants inside a diagonally cut box and cover it with your glass window. Voila! They will now be protected while getting ample amount of sunlight too. Similarly, you can grow plants as well by filling your box with sand and sowing seeds.

  • You can use your glass window as a table top as well, or as a door for your bedside table. Paint your window glasses and use them as a shield from sunlight in the balcony.

  • You can use a glassless window as a blackboard or as a notice board too. Attach a black chart paper from the backside and hang it in your room. You will no longer forget what test you have this week.

  • If you have a talent in glass painting then paint your windows and flaunt your artwork in your living area.

  • Attach wooden slabs to your window frame and you have a shelf ready to place your daily use items.

  • Buy windows of different sizes and install them as wall art. However, be careful while placing them. Don’t use too many window frames as it may not be very pleasing to the eye.

  • If you have been thinking about putting up a world map for a while now, windows can come in handy. Install the map within the window frame and add an element of style to your room.

Further Note

While there are a lot of creative ways to use windows, one most important aspect is to maintain them, so the glass doesn’t wear out too easily. Whether you are using old windows or new ones, make sure that they are regularly cleaned. You can easily do it yourself at home or go for waterfed window cleaning once in awhile to increase the lifespan of the window glass and protect it from damage. Also, when you are putting windows to creative use, make sure they are cleaned properly first as dirty windows pose a potential threat to your health.
