Getting Red Carpet Ready Hair: The Brazilian Blowout
I have a not-so-little secret: I hate my hair. In 23 years, I’ve grown to accept it (because really, what choice do I have?), but it’s an unruly pile of frizzy curls… and it has been ever since I was born.
Like every other girl in the world, I wanted what I couldn’t have: straight hair. Actually, I didn’t even want it to be straight; I just wanted it to be less curly. Of course, as I got older, it got even curlier.
I think the worst hair experience I ever had was when I was about ten. I went to a salon with my mother and asked for my hair to be cut to my shoulders with layers. She did just that… literally. I walked around looking like Bozo the clown for long enough to stop really trusting stylists. When I was around sixteen, I started cutting my own hair (and still do to this day) and dying it. I had tried before to tame down the curl – I’ve gotten relaxers, straightening treatments, even large-roller perms – but none of it did the trick.
Flash forward to now. My hair?
Still curly. And I’d pretty much come to accept that as a fact of life until Shareena Reardon came along. A stylist at the Eminently Hair Salon (and a great blogger in her own right!), Shareena was looking to get the Brazilian Blowout into the Aveda salon she’s at. She needed a test subject, and I was more than happy to oblige.
What, you ask, is the Brazilian Blowout? It’s a professional smoothing treatment out of Brazil (bet you could’ve guessed that one…) that softens curls and actually improves the health of your hair. PLUS, instead of giving you the look of overgrown roots like perms or chemical straighteners, the Brazilian Blowout fades out of your hair in 6-8 weeks, so you’re back to your natural hair style and texture.
My results were impressive to say the least. The entire experience wasn’t absolutely amazing (there is some burning in your eyes when they’re sealing the treatment into your hair), but at 90 minutes with the extreme results, it was worth every second.

I was able to create this straight style in all of 15 minutes! To put that into perspective, it usually takes me TWO HOURS to get my hair totally straight!
The Brazilian Blowout costs anywhere from $250-600 (depending on the salon) and lasts six to eight weeks. I’ll probably get it again for a special occasion (like heading out to BlogHer in August), but because of the price, I probably won’t get it as often as I’d like.
Do you have unruly hair? Is the Brazilian Blowout something you’d be interested in trying? Have you gotten this treatment done already? Leave a comment (or email me at jaime@thefashionablehousewife.com) on the post and let us know all about it!
And, for those of you in the Denver area, I’d highly recommend checking out Shareena. She did fabulous work and left me feeling like a celeb (particularly after my celeb treatment)!

I reently had the keratin smoothing process done on my curly, frizzy, unruly hair. It was fabulous, though I did notice my hair after washing felt a little “stiff”. I understand the brazilian blowout is not like thawt, it actually softens the hair and make it healthier! I think I will give it a try before heading out to South Beach this summer!
I’m the same way, detesting my wavy hair, BUT I do love your hair curly! It reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw and it frames your face great. All girls think their own hair looks best straight – it just feels sleeker and cleaner and more put-together – but I swear yours is better c-c-c-curly! :)

I know you don’t believe it, but I think your curls are gorgeous! You’re right; nobody likes what they already have….
I too, was the test subject for my stylist at her salon with the Brazilian blow-out. I love it, for the most part but (in true female fashion) I do miss having a little curl because I find that it is almost too flat. I have solved that with extra large velcro rollers but even that doesn’t hold for very long. My stylist said next time she does it, she will actually apply the “potion” with the large velcro rollers on the top to give me the volume I am lacking. Had it done before Christmas and it is still stick straight..

P.S. Big hair is very IN right now. I would consider big hair very red carpet ready. I have big hair too and am totally living it up right now. So happy to be done with the hippie waif stick straight hair craze of the 90s. I do straighten my hair from time to time, but last summer I went in for a nice big fat ringlet perm ala Poison Ivy.

Looks Fantastic! I would love to see how it looks after the blowout air dried….do you still have some curl? Just waves?

I’m really interested to see what it looks like when it’s faded out completely. I’m deathly afraid of getting this done and losing my curl totally because I LOVE my curly hair, but love the idea of having it straightened since I live in the world’s wettest climate right now which really rules out straightening it very often.
There’s a NEWER keratin treatment, Brazilian Gloss, a brand new formula out in the hair care market! It’s a lower heat which means less fumes if any and will make your hair much glossier and healthier. I’ve seen the results with my own eyes and it’s AMAZING! :) Check it out here https://www.braziliangloss.com/about_brazilian_gloss-about-keratin-hair-treatement-and-curly-frizzy-hair-problems.html
I am a stylist and owner of an Aveda salon (Zandi K. Hair and Skin Studio in Denver), that does a ton of Brazilian Blowouts and I have to say that it has had amazing results on different hair types. I just cut a client of mine who I had done the blowout on two weeks prior and we decided to do a really glam stlye iron curl on her and it was beautiful! It held the curl great and had a ton of volume. The difference was that it didn’t take me 45 minutes to get her hair blow out before curling…it took me 5. She normally has super thick, coarse hair and she says she just washes and wears now. As a stylist, I have to say that it is a life/time saver for my clients…and my blow-drying arm. :-)
Personally in my experience in this field I would say never give up your search for that one product that might make your hair more manageable. Respectively i think your beautiful despite what you feel is a downfall. It could be worse you could have no hair.
