wardrobe techniques from the pros.
A capsule is a group of clothes that mix and match and can be bought together to save time and money. Season, color, style and fabric should be considered when grouping clothes together in a capsule. For optimum results, capsules should be built around one or two ‘anchor’ jackets that can be worn with various pieces in your wardrobe to form suits and other outfits. Versatility is the key to creating a successful capsule.
Once established, a capsule can be expanded and pieces added or replaced very easily. When considering a new addition to your wardrobe, make sure that the piece matches at least three to four other existing garments. This will reduce the ‘cost per wearing’ of each piece in your wardrobe.
Let’s use a $200 jacket in our example:
First, divide the cost of the jacket by the number of garments in your wardrobe capsule that can be worn with it. Let’s say that I have 1 dress, 2 pairs of slacks and 2 skirts that can be worn with the jacket – a total of 5 garments. (ie: $200/5 = $40)
The $200 jacket has now been reduced to a cost of $40
Next, divide the new cost of $40 by the number of times the jacket will be worn per year (ie: $40/20 = $2)
The $200 jacket has now been further reduced to a cost $2
The last step is to divide the new cost of $2 by the number of years the jacket will be worn (ie: $2/5 = 40 cents)
Final Result: A $200 jacket has been reduced to a cost of 40 cents with the use of wardrobe capsules and careful upkeep.
