If I had to describe the bedroom, I’d say it’s a place of sanctity, a place for the collision of two souls, a room for nurturing intimacy, peace and romance. And if asked whether or not I would like for an interior designer to arrange my bedroom, I would say only if I’m included in the entire process of color choosing, material discussion and eventually deciding on every other piece as my eye perceives it best. Yup, I am not exactly the ideal client for an interior designer.
So on one occasion, a friend of mine asked for my opinion on some bedroom furniture. She wanted to inject a romantic charm and reignite her marriage flame.
It got me thinking: what would I use to create a romantic ambiance in a bedroom? After all, romance has a different meaning to each individual person. For some it’s a red hot fiery adventure, while for others is all gentle hugs and kisses and light-hearted nuances. Most of the time, I tend to lean toward the latter. So, how would an extremely passionate person deck out their bedroom?
First: How do you perceive romance?
Like I said, not all people have the same idea of romance. For some it’s red flames and fiery passion underneath the sheets (honeymoon stage, Iโd say). For others, it’s the loving intimate and comfortable moments that define love and romance. Your personal interpretation of romance can guide and influence your bedroom furniture choices, particularly when it comes to colors and small details.
The bed
Naturally, the most important part of any bedroom is the bed. It’s the piece of furniture that instantly catches a personโs attention upon entering the room and of course, itโs also the place where magic happens. So, besides the obvious level of comfort of sleep which is non-negotiable (keep this is mind when you choose the mattress), when deciding to buy bedroom furniture, the bed should be given special attention. Start with a proper bed frame. I’d suggest looking through bed frames that are more subtle and easy to fit in more than one design scheme. For example, leather is elegant and classy, yet very strict in color combinations, decorations and overall design direction. Wood is a whole other story. It’s easy to use it with a wide range of colors, creating all kinds of atmospheres. And finally, a bed frame upholstered with suede – it allows specific color use and therefore a lot more precise style direction. Add some pops of red color, as this is the color of passion.
Furniture
You need more than a bed to create the perfect romantic atmosphere. The bed is a good starting point, but the dรฉcor around it must complement the room as well. Once you’ve chosen the bed, youโll have a clear direction for the rest of the bedroom furniture elements that youโll need, like side tables, drawers and dressers. Try to match them all in material and color, or at least shoot for the same color family. If you’re good with colors, do a combo but be very careful: screaming nuances aren’t romantic.
Style
Now, I can’t really say there’s a romantic style of bedroom furniture. To each their own in this regard. However, some furniture styles are more easy on the eye than others. You could go Scandanavian or instead you can opt for burgundy or mahogany. Vintage styles are classic and romantic too. If you and your partner are into the rustic look, then op for a vintage or industrial design. Break up the wood with throws, cushions and colorful wall art to finish off the look.
To wrap it all, I’d say color plays a huge role when choosing bedroom furniture and bedroom decor with a romantic ambiance in mind. Of course, style, comfort and quality are non-negotiable, and whatever you choose can always be decorated with the elements of romance: roses, scented candles, and dimmed lights.
