Contrary to popular belief, travelling doesn’t have to be an expensive hobby. In fact, there are many hacks out there that can help you save money when it comes to planning your trips and setting off on your next adventure. We want to make seeing the world as accessible as possible to everyone, no matter what your budget. So, with that in mind, here are just a few of the best tips and tricks to help cut the cost of your travels.

Book in the middle of the week

We’re not necessarily talking about travelling in the middle of the week, but actually sealing the deal and booking your trip some time around mid-week; ideally on a Tuesday. “Why?”, you ask? Well, booking trends show that most people are browsing holidays and booking trips over the weekend when they’re home from work and maybe with their partner, so tour operators and travel agents know to increase their prices at this time. They’ll then reduce them again mid-week.

Consider your mode of transport

Flying or train travel might not always be your cheapest option, depending on where you’re going. If you’re travelling to multiple destinations across Europe, for example, or sticking closer to home and exploring the likes of Scotland or Wales, then car hire might be a more cost-effective solution. Always weigh up your options and compare potential costs.

Choose your time

If your trip away isn’t determined by your job or your family, then a great way to save a bit of cash is to travel out of season. Flights, accommodation, attractions and much more can be a lot cheaper when it’s not peak season, depending on where you’re going. Travelling to a sunny destination in spring or autumn, as opposed to the height of summer, will likely still be pleasant weather wise but will cost less and be more peaceful too.

Set up alerts

If you know exactly when and where it is you want to travel, then it pays to plan ahead. The earlier you book, the better deals you’ll find. But also, if the right deal isn’t there for you just yet, then you should still have time to set up an email alert and be notified by the booking agent as soon as the price drops.

Travel light

One of the most common ways of racking up costs when travelling is by paying to check luggage in on a flight or, worse still, being charged at the airport for going over your weight allowance. Of course, you can overcome this with a bit of clever packing and, if possible, only take hand luggage with you. You won’t be able to carry liquid containers that are more than 100ml in your bag, but let’s not forget that you can always buy things such as shampoo, shower gel and sun cream once you get to wherever it is that you’re going. You might find that it’s actually cheaper out there anyway.
