Weekend Activities To Keep The Kids Busy

The kids have been back at school for awhile now, but you’re finding the weekend is filled with mostly TV, video games, and the web. When they’re bored, restless children can be a lot to handle after a long week of work. Finding a variety of weekend activities that will keep them occupied, doing active and creative things, and using up different types of energies is your best course of action. You can choose to join in or simply relax and watch from the sidelines! Here are a few ideas for inspiration.

Keep Active:

Physical activities the whole family can enjoy and sports are healthy choices and use an ample amount of energy. Plus, they’re a good opportunity for kids to spend time with siblings, friends, new acquaintances, get out of the house, and make use of your backyard.

Some ideas are:

• Joining a local team like softball, indoor soccer, dancing, or gymnastics. The regular scheduling will get a healthy routine going and be something they need to attend.

• Drawing and colouring with multi-media. Bring out the crayons, markers, pencil sets, glitter glue, and assortment of construction paper and colouring pads. Spread out a selection on a large table or on the floor.
• Arts and crafts stores sell a wide variety of kits to make props like superhero masks, fairy wings, funny costume hats, and other accessories. Spend time making these pieces and using them to fuel imaginative games that can last all afternoon.
• Painting can get a bit messy, but it’s manageable if you’re prepared with the right stuff. Select old t-shirts and pants to be your dedicated artist’s clothes or use smocks, purchase an easel or use furniture that act like one, or else spread out large sheets of paper or newsprint to colour masterworks on the floor.
• Have fun sculpting with colour clay like Play-doh or make your own together using a child-safe recipe online and common kitchen staples.

Learn Something New:

Check out your local YMCA, community center, or The Traveling Parent for a wide variety of classes for kids. These could be sports, disciplines like martial arts, dancing, learning an instrument, technology classes, photography, cooking, arts and crafts, creative writing and storytelling, book clubs, nature or science-related weekend activities. The library is another excellent place to discover classes for all ages and often for free.

Using both mind and body in new and fun ways will burn off that energy plus keep kids healthy and engaged while they’re at it. Just remember to use a gymnastic mat for safety purposes. Finding a few weekend activities that the whole family can enjoy will keep all of you active and healthy!
