Cankles are a common problem that pregnant women face. In pregnancy, there is an excess amount of fluid in the body which leads to the swelling of the ankles and feet. The swelling only worsens as the closer you get to the due date. While swelling tends to cause some concern, when pregnant you shouldnโt be very concerned about the swelling of your feet and ankles.
Cankles can make getting around a pain, making it more difficult. We have some steps you can take to help you avoid cankles or reduce them if you are experiencing them already.
Donโt stand for too long
Standing up puts a lot of pressure on your feet, it also allows the extra fluid in your body to pass down to your feet. This causes swelling, so it is better you try to stay off your feet for a longer period of time.
Prop your feet up when sitting
This ensures that the fluid doesnโt travel down to your feet and settle there. This may be tough to do every time you sit but then donโt sit for too long, it is better you lie down instead. You should also avoid crossing your legs as when you sit in the position your feet are down rather than propped.
When sleeping you should lie down on your left side
Lying down on your side takes pressure completely off your feet. So this ensures that your feet do not receive fluid or any pressure.
Stretch often
Especially after sitting, you should stretch your legs so that it gets proper blood flow. Stretching is also good for helping out your back pains.
Wear compression socks
Compression socks not only provide comfort for the feet but they also provide a lot of support for the feet and ankles. They ensure your ankles and feet are compressed enough to get adequate blood flow and not swell too much. If you are able to find quality compression socks they will be able to assist you in your pregnancy. You can wear the socks throughout the day as you move about your home.
Exercise regularly
Any form of exercise is good, stretching or pregnancy yoga is a wonderful way to keep your feet and ankles active.
Stay as cool as possible
Make sure you are hydrated at all time and stay in cool temperature as much as you can.
