His and Her Bedroom Makeover Ideas
Whether you’ve been together for decades, years or months, every couple has their own personal preferences when it comes to furnishing and decorating a bedroom. This is why so many have gone to a ‘his and hers’ design. Not only will each partner be comfortable in his or her surroundings at night but the makeover will give the room a whole new look.
If done right, you can add character that just wouldn’t be possible if designed to please just one partner or the other. Have you ever wondered if some relationships might have survived if the bedroom had been as comfortable for both partners as it had been for one? Try some of the following ideas and you just might find that his and hers décor really isn’t as unstylish as you thought it’d be!
Choosing the Right Color
There is no reason why both partners can’t have some input as to the color scheme you will use in the bedroom. While both may have totally opposite likes when it comes to favorite colors, there are ways to reach a compromise. No, you probably shouldn’t divide the room in half with the man’s side being bright orange and the lady’s side lavender but there has to be one color that appeals to both. Yes, opposites do attract, but you wouldn’t be together if you didn’t agree on ‘some’ things. If all else fails, go for off white or eggshell. Neutral tones will work well with the other changes you are about to make.
Neutrality in Décor
Here again, there might be a little bit of a problem when it comes to décor because most women love frills in the bedroom while men prefer, well, most men don’t really prefer much of anything other than a nightstand, a lamp and a couple of books or a television set. Décor? What is a man’s bedroom without a TV? Therefore, the best line of defense is to do nothing at all. Keep it simple with his and hers nightstands and each can place whatever little ‘trinkets’ they’d like to decorate their stand. As for wall hangings, pictures and linens, it is best to go neutral with perhaps framed pictures of places you have visited on vacation or simply pictures of the kids or grandma and grandpa. Neutrality is always best in terms of color and décor, so stick with this and all will be well.
The Bed Is Not a Problem!
Here is where the fun begins! The bed is never going to be a problem because there are beds on the market that allow each partner to set his or her own level of support and comfort. One suggestion is to go with a Sleep Number style bed where both sides can be set at varying levels of support so that each partner gets the rest they need. Look for a bed that is listed as a number bed, adjustable bed or simply as a Sleep Number bed that most of us know them by, and this should be the crowning achievement in your his and hers bedroom makeover. Neither partner will need to ‘compromise’ comfort which will keep you both very, very happy at night.
Renovating the Master Bath
This, while not actually part of the actual master bedroom is still part of the ‘his and hers’ bedroom makeover. In fact, it is a vital part of the entire process. If you have room to totally revamp the bathroom this will be the most profitable expense you can imagine. Have separate sinks installed, often on opposite walls so you can literally see the other’s back while looking in the mirror at your own face. On the lady’s side, if there is room, a small lighted vanity would be a nice touch but it isn’t exactly necessary if the counter surrounding the sink is large enough to house her makeup and skincare products. On the man’s side, as long as there is room for his razor, a brush/comb and toothbrush, he will generally be quite happy.
His and hers bedroom suites are actually all the rage at the moment. By keeping colors and furnishings neutral you can still add those finishing touches that make each partner feel happily ‘at home.’ A bedroom must be comfortable and there is nothing worse than suffering through a bedroom that is either too masculine or too feminine. Budget for a revamp of the master bath and walk-in closet and you will have achieved what just could be the salvation of your relationship! Who knows how many fights started over equal time in the mirror or getting rid of that ghastly picture on the nightstand? With a ‘his and hers’ scheme, both partners get what they want and then they live happily ever after. Or so the story goes…
