I love summer and summer styles, and the freedom to crawl out from layers of winter clothing. But every summer I struggle with just what length short is REALLY appropriate. There comes a time in every gal’s life when she has to admit that her legs just aren’t what they used to be, and there is this invisible threshold that marks the age line between appropriate and ridiculous. But shorts seem to be getting shorter by the day, and sometimes it is really hard to find a pair that is functional, stylish and affordable.
Grazing over the “booty shorts” as my girls call them, (you know, the ones that barely cover anything…) there is a wide range of moderate inseam cut-off shorts and tailored shorts that are great for summer and beyond. Some cute options from Gap are Roll-Up Shorts:
and their 1969 Pleated Pocket Shorts:
Old Navy also has a huge selection of reasonably priced shorts starting at under $10. My favorites are the Women’s 5″ Rise Perfect Khaki Shorts for $15.50:
If you don’t want to go as long as Bermuda length shorts but feel like you need a little something extra to feel more comfortable, try a pair of lace “Under Shorts” like these ones from Free People:
Available in pink, black and olive, they provide a little length and a lot of style to your favorite shorts without making you feel like you’re wering Mom Jeans!
So go ahead and wear your short shorts and enjoy the freedom of summer styles while the weather is good!
