Okay, I know it sounds a little kooky to spend nearly $200 on a toothbrush. The Sensible Sally in me would normally ridicule such a decision. But while we all love shopping for great clothes, everybody knows that looking good starts with the basics.
Keeping it real- if you encountered a woman wearing exquisite Balenciaga couture but she smiled like some diseased hag, what would you really remember about her? Or what if she felt so self-conscious about her teeth that she didn’t smile at all? What kind of impression would that create?

Yes, it was a biggish initial investment, but my teeth are loving me for it. They have never felt so clean; at my last dental checkup my hygienist actually described them as “immaculate,” which might have been the proudest moment of my life.
A few things to know about the Philips Sonicare:
- It’s an intense clean. At first, my husband and I both found that the scrubbing action made us ticklish. We got used to it, though, and there is a setting for people with especially sensitive teeth and gums. And once you’ve started using it, you won’t be satisfied with the plain, old brush cleaning.
- You can order just one unit for multiple people. The brush heads are detachable, so you can just attach yours when it’s time to brush. The unit also comes with a convenient UV-ray cleaning function to keep your brush head hygienic while you store it.
- The unit comes with a convenient travel charger so that you don’t have to take the whole carrier for quick trips. However, when my husband and I have traveled with it, we’ve found that we barely need to charge at all.
