  1. I’m in Oregon but have seen prices in Cali firsthand. For us here, $400 a month is our maximum grocery budget as well, but it’s actually amazing how much it saves you if you ONLY do groceries. I use Mint.com to track my expenses and see where my money is going and it totally opened my eyes. With how much we spent eating out in one week, we could have easily gotten groceries for the whole month. The worst for us was gas station snacks and drinks, especially overpriced energy drinks and soda.

Luckily I have a love for leftovers. I am always the friend who boxes up her leftover food, because I know that my husband or I *will* eat it. Takeout from the night before is often used in a new meal, whether it’s paired with rice or a salad. Microwaved restaurant food is also the BEST midnight snack.

Our one splurge is sushi. When I crave sushi I HAVE to have it. I personally will not ever go over budget for fast food though. Value menu only.

Good luck with the rest of your food budget!

  2. I often buy the store brand items. I am very picky about the quality of food I feed my family, but I’ve found these are generally the same quality as the brand items. And I save a lot on the price difference!

  3. Yes, it is the little things, isn’t it? Once you start tracking it, it’s crazy how much you can throw away on quick trips to the convenience store. And the challenge has eliminated eating out for us, which is a good thing because it had become a crutch. I truly appreciate a well-prepared and served meal (and want to support our local establishments as much as possible), but we were often eating out just for convenience. It’s been great to see how easily (and happily!) we can eat at home instead.

Like you, though, I love my sushi and can’t wait to treat myself next month– hopefully as a reward for succeeding at the budget challenge. We’ll see… : )
