High Heels and Preventing and Treating Blisters, Corns, and Calluses
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, 39 percent of women wear high heels every day. Nearly three out of four have a shoe-related foot problem.
Some of the biggest foot problems are blisters, corns, calluses, and other forms of skin trauma. Heels over two inches alter the way you walk. A heel more than three inches puts seven times – SEVEN TIMES! – the pressure on the ball of your foot than heels under three inches. This increase in pressure leads to increased friction – which in turn causes the blisters, corns, and calluses to develop. So if you are into designer high heels you might be looking at future foot problems!
To prevent skin trauma on your foot, you have a few different options. First, you can apply bandages or tapes to your skin. Bandages can act as a protective outer barrier. However, not all bandages reduce friction – the cause of blisters, corns, and calluses – and bandages are often difficult to keep on the foot. Friction, bathing, and oils from the skin all make it difficult to keep bandages and tape in place on the foot.
Second, at least in theory, you can wear socks. Some socks are specially designed to reduce friction. However, for most people wearing high heels, socks are not an option.
Third, you can use lotions, oils, or powders. For a while such materials can reduce friction. However, as time passes, these materials quickly wear off and the problem returns.
Finally, you can use a friction management interface. Tamarack™ Habilitation Technologies has developed a patented, friction management interface called ENGO®. ENGO® offers a number of advantages:
-
· ENGO® applies to the inside of footwear; not to the feet.
· ENGO® patches remain in place for an extended length of time – in many cases, for months.
· ENGO® offers targeted friction relief right to the spot where it hurts.
· ENGO® patches are ultra-thin, so they don’t change the way your shoes fit.
· ENGO® patches can be trimmed to any size. This is especially important for high heels because in many cases it may be straps that are causing you pain.
If you read the testimonials at Tamarack’s website, www.goengo.com you will see how effective ENGO® has been for women. The company has assured us, that these are authentic, unsolicited testimonials.

I’ve got a “shoe-related foot problem” for you, and I wanted to know if anyone has had this problem.
I wore heels Saturday for a pretty long time, to the point to where my feet were about to go on strike. Well, when I took them off, I noticed that the middle toes on each of my feet are numb. Completely numb, and have been for two days now.
I am wondering if this is a normal occurance. I’ve been wearing heels more and more lately, but this is the first time my toes have gone numb!
I have used the Engo Blister patches on everything from tennis shoes (used in the breast cancer three day) to sandals. I have trouble with the backs of my heels in athletic shoes and the sides of my big and little toes in dress shoes and sandals. The patches reduce the rubbing and leave me pain free the entire day. It is a wonderful product.
I have used Engo Blister Patches on everything from athletic shoes to sandals. I have trouble with my heels in athletic shoes and with the sides of my big and little toes when wearing dress shoes or sandals. The Engo patches work great to reduce the rubbing and pain plus they are really thin so they don’t add any bulk to my shoes. Great product.
I have used Engo blister patches for many years now. I was born with bunions so I’ve always had problems with shoes. I tried the Engo patches on the side of my bunions (where I had the most problems and large calluses) and they worked like a charm! After a while my calluses went away and my feet just felt better. The great thing about the Engo patches is that they are extremely thin so I barely noticed they were in my shoes! Which is a good thing since I don’t have a lot of room in my shoes to begin with. This is a great product and I would recommend it to anyone.
I have persistent trouble with callouses near my big toes and blisters on my heels, particularly from my soccer shoes. I’m anxious to try Engo. It sounds like a good solution.
Amanda,
I am not a doctor, but it sounds like you might have a condition called Morton’s Neuroma. See https://www.mayoclinic.com/health/mortons-neuroma/DS00468
