5 Common Causes of Hair Loss in Both Men and Women

5 Common Causes of Hair Loss in Both Men and Women

You are brushing your luxuriously thick mane one day when you look at your hairbrush and gasp in shock. The light dims in and out, and your mirror does some sort of dance in front of you. You want to scream – actually open your mouth to unleash a blood cuddling one – but you have been muted.

What is the problem? Half of your hair has moved from your head to your brush! How did that happen? Why did that happen? Read on. You might just unravel this great, but utterly unwelcome mystery.

What are the causes of hair loss?

The expectation is, men go bald at some point. Not women. Men. However, hair loss can be as traumatic for men as it is for women. Reasons for hair loss range from mental trauma to nutritional deficiencies. In order to treat hair loss and hopefully arrest or reverse it, it is important to figure out what causes it. Treatment depends on the cause. You may need to see a professional hair transplant surgeon for guidance and treatment.

Here are a few of the most common causes of hair loss:

Physical Trauma

This can be as result of an accident, severe illness, or any physical trauma. The hair loss caused by this kind of trauma is temporary and is known as telogen effluvium. Hair has at least three phases:

  • Growth
  • Rest
  • Shedding

When you have an event that is extremely stressful to the extent of causing trauma, your hair cycle also feels the brunt of it, and the shedding may come faster than expected. Fortunately, with this kind of shedding, the hair grows back as your body gets back to its usual healthy form.

Pregnancy

A lot of expectant women report hair loss during pregnancy. Being heavy with child does quite a number of things to the female body, and can be exceedingly stressful. The hormones are all over the place. The hair seems to be getting ready to flee. True enough, most hair loss is reported after delivery. Giving birth is a level of stress in its own class. As with physical trauma, your hair is bound to grow back.

Male pattern baldness

You have seen that M-shaped hairline that most men seem to acquire in their advanced age, say about 60. That’s it. A combination of genes and male sex hormones are to blame for this.

It’s in the Genes

Sometimes, you were simply born with it. If the ladies in your family start losing their hair early, yours will most likely follow suit.

Emotional Trauma

This is even worse than physical stress as far as hair is concerned. When someone goes through an emotionally draining experience like the loss of a loved one, bankruptcy or divorce, you might notice clumps of hair falling off. However, experts say that hair loss due to stress is not permanent.

As circumstances change and the stress reduces, your hair will grow back. The best you can do here is try to manage your stress as much as you can. Hitting the gym or even going for therapy has been known to work. Other common causes of hair loss include chemotherapy and thyroid issues.
