In fact, something that may seem so innocuous as choosing the right colors for the various materials that will be used can weigh heavily on the outcome.

What Color Palette Do You Want to Work With?

While it might be tempting to jump right into choosing the materials that you’ll use for your home renovation, it’s much more efficient to begin by selecting your color palette. Choosing a certain color may mean you’ll have fewer options when it comes to the material (or vice versa). What neutral colors lack in boldness, they more than makeup for in versatility. These colors tend to be widely used in rooms that are designated as areas to receive and entertain guests.

Once you’ve settled on a color palette for your tiles, you can begin assigning color schemes, and other design considerations to specific spaces. Here are a few tips to help you pick the right tile for the room(s) you’re working on.

First, consider the size of the room before anything else.  If the room is small and you’d like to make it look bigger, you might want to consider a lighter hue for your flooring tiles. This doesn’t only work in rooms, however. Using a cream or pastel colored tile in hallways and tight entryways can also create the illusion of a larger space.  

Next, select a tile style that you’d like to use. When considering the type of tile, it’s recommended that aspects other than aesthetic be considered, namely the intended use for the tile and its inherent durability. For example, stain-resistant glazed tile holds up particularly well in areas where stains are commonplace, namely kitchens and bathrooms.

When putting a room together, it’s important to remember that the colors you use don’t all have to reside on the same side of the color wheel. Sometimes use a contrasting color is a great way to create an element of visual intrigue in your room, something that can be difficult to achieve if you exclusively use homogenous colors.
