10 Ways To Speed Up Recovery From an Injury or Illness

Whether you’ve sprained your ankle or broken your arm, you might feel anxious and less than happy about your current situation. You may even be wondering if there is anything that you could have done differently to prevent the injury in the first place. It can feel like a combination of frustration, worry, and guilt for you to feel these emotions at such a difficult time. However, it is essential to keep our minds occupied with healthy activities rather than self-destructive thoughts to help slow down and balance our emotions during this time of stress and challenge. Here are some ways that you can support recovery from an injury or illness:

Stay Active

One key aspect of recovery is staying active and exercising if you can.  It’s essential to start off slowly if your injury or illness has restricted your ability to do any physical activities. You should aim to get back into some form of physical activity as soon as possible, as it will improve your mood and help maintain your energy levels. As a general rule, you should aim to spend at least 30 minutes a day engaging in some form of physical activity, and it could be a light walk around the block or something more challenging like a thirty-minute bike ride. 

Breathe Naturally

It’s easy to get caught up in the emotions of an injury or illness and worry about what’s happened and what might happen in the future. However, it is important to keep breathing naturally and focusing on the present. This will help you to reduce any feelings of anxiety and stress that you might be experiencing.  If you start having bouts of anxiety resulting from your injury or illness, there are some breathing exercises that you should try to get your breathing under control. For example, breathe in for four seconds, and breathe out for four seconds to make your breathing equal and even.  If you can control your breathing this way, it will tell your body that there’s nothing to worry about and can help you soothe anxiety over time.

Eat Healthily

A healthy diet can help you get the nutrients needed to stay healthy and recover from an injury or illness. Healthy diets include vegetables, fruit, protein, and whole grains. Try to incorporate foods high in protein, such as chicken, fish, tofu, and beans. Your injury or illness might reduce your appetite, but it is still essential to eat enough every day and get the proper nutrients.  Talk to your doctor about ways to help your appetite if you are experiencing issues with this.

Talk To Your Doctor

If your injury or illness has affected your mobility or caused you to feel out of breath, you must talk to your doctor. This may be the only way they can provide you with the necessary treatment. Similarly, if your injury or illness has impacted your mental health, you should try to find a therapist or counselor who can meet with you to discuss how you’re feeling. 

Redefine Your Goals

Sometimes, we get so caught up in the rush of recovery from an injury or illness that we forget to slow down and take a step back. This could be a good thing as it could help you define what you want to achieve from your recovery. For example, if you were recovering from an issue caused by poor fitness or diet, redefining your goals could include getting back into better shape and eating healthier foods. When recovering, it is important that you work on underlying issues that might impact your future health as well as your health right now.

Give Yourself a Reward

During recovery from an injury or illness, it can be easy to feel like you’re in a constant uphill battle. It can be helpful to reward yourself if you have been healthy and are taking steps to recover more quickly. This could be anything from buying a new pair of shoes to booking a dream holiday. Try to choose something you would like to do but would not usually prioritize. This will help you to refocus your thoughts and see recovery as a gift.

Get Financial Compensation If The Injury Wasn’t Your Fault

You should always see if you can be financially compensated for an illness or injury that wasn’t your fault.  This can help to cover expenses for your physical recovery and your financial losses for the time spent recovering.  You should talk to an injury lawyer if you would like to push for financial compensation with a legal team to ensure you are paid what you deserve.

Spend Time With Family And Friends

Spending time with family and friends while recovering from an injury or illness will help you stay optimistic about your situation and appreciate what you have. You could also try and make time for hobbies or interests that you hadn’t been able to, such as DIY, reading, or watching your favorite sport. It can be easy to forget how important these activities are to you if you haven’t been able to do them for a while.

Get a massage

Massages have been proven to have a significant impact on immunity and blood flow, as well as physical and mental health. Having a massage can help to remove toxins and boost your immune system. It can also improve your blood flow, allowing your muscles to heal faster than they would if left alone. Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor if they recommend a massage as part of your treatment. If your doctor doesn’t recommend it, you can easily request to have it done on your own. A massage therapist can remove toxins and boost your immune system, making it an excellent option for recovery.

Take a break from strenuous activities

If you are actively recovering from an injury or illness, avoiding strenuous activities, like running or lifting weights, is best. This will help prevent further damage to your muscles, tendons, and ligaments, and it can also help to minimize your risk of re-injuring. If you absolutely must do any type of exercise, ensure it’s very low-impact and is designed to gently warm up your muscles rather than work them to breaking point.

This little guy always asks to help when he sees me cleaning the house, washing the floors, doing laundry, or emptying the dishwasher. That’s what I love about Montessori parenting - it allows kids to do  big jobs and in turn makes them eager to help! 

He was over the moon when we gave him the @lovevery floor mop that actually works! He uses it daily now. The mopping pad is machine washable and you can refill the fluid container on it. I usually just do water and a drop of essential oils because he loves it when everything smells clean! 😜

Today was my due date for Dylan. Considering he w Today was my due date for Dylan.

Considering he was my 6th child, it's possible he would have been here by now. It’s been extra hard for me this week. 

Despite my best efforts to be strong and stay positive, I am completely brokenhearted. I’m just being honest. I could pretend I’m fine, but that doesn't do me or anyone else any good to be dishonest about the pain of miscarriage or the grief that comes with losing a child. 

My heart is completely shattered from having an empty womb and an empty nursery. An empty bassinet in the corner and unused tiny newborn outfits, all washed, folded, and ready… for nothing. 

It makes me physically sick to my stomach when I think about it all and I can't even fathom how I got here. How did I get here? 

This isn't how it's supposed to be! I should be holding a newborn right now! It’s so unfair. 

In an instant, my baby was gone and there was nothing I could do to change that. 

It doesn't matter how much time passes or what else happens in life, I will always miss him. My heart with always long for my baby. 

Those who haven't experienced loss tell you that "Don’t worry! Things will get better, just focus on the positive!" but people who actually know this grief and what it actually feels like to lose a baby, won’t tell you that. They know this hard road. They understand that unfortunately you don't just “get over it.” 

The grief doesn't just go away, even if you try to ignore it, it's still there. Like the sun. You don’t have to look at it to know it’s there. You can turn your back on it but it will still warm your skin. 

The grief from losing a child is unbearable. 
It is unpredictable.
It is unforgiving.
It is relentless.
It is all-consuming.
And it completely shatters you when you don’t expect it. 

You don’t get over it. You don’t forget. You simply learn to live with it. And I’m learning to live with it every day. 

It’s been 137 days I’ve had to live without my baby. 

Lord Jesus, please… hold me extra tight tonight.
