Bashing Other Moms – Yay or Nay?

Maria Kang

HuffPost Parents hits the nail on the head with their latest article What’s Your Excuse for Bashing Other Moms?.

I guess I live under a rock and I hadn’t noticed that once again, the beautiful fitness guru and mother to three, Maria Kang was getting flack again for… *gasp* being herself.

So here is my two cents on the issue. I think Maria is the bomb.

In my honest opinion… the only reason why ANYBODY wouldn’t like her and would choose to hate on her is simply because of their own guilt. I’m not saying that her lifestyle and fitness level is “right for everyone” but don’t we all want to be healthy? Don’t we all want to strive to do what’s best?

I can see where her claim to “not making excuses” and taking time to take care of herself could definitely make other moms feel bad about themselves because they either like to make excuses of why they can’t look like her and get back into shape OR they are already so overwhelmed in life that they don’t even want to think about how they SHOULD be taking care of themselves. I get it! I’m a mom! I’m 7 months pregnant! Do I want to be thinking about exercising and staying in shape while I’m having a hard time keeping up with my two children, homeschooling them and making my business continue to run smoothly?! NO! I’m having trouble even peeling my ass out of the bed in the morning to start another day!!!! Does that mean that I hate Maria Kang for looking great after having three kids, running her own business and staying fit and healthy at the same time? Of course not! I look to her for inspiration!!!

Shouldn’t we all????

Why is it that we want to condemn those who “do better” than us? Ridiculing others and putting them down doesn’t bring them down to our level, it just makes us look worse and feel worse. Why is that our human nature though? I mean, I feel like we think it’s corny and sappy to be “cheering each other on” as moms. Why is that? Why can’t everyone just BE NICE OR SHUTUP?!

What do you think about bashing other moms?

Dietary Supplement to Lose Weight, Get More Energy and Clear Acne?!

Smooth 8

A simple dietary supplement that claims to help you lose weight, boost your energy and clear up acne? What tha?!! Sounds like snake oil, right?

Here is a tid-bit about the so-called miracle product…

This revolutionary alkalizing system, purifies water, boosts your energy, stimulates weight loss, kills the acidity in any beverage, and clears acne. With an alkaline level of 9.9, a few drops of Smooth 8 naturally neutralizes the acidity of any beverage — water (bottled or tap), coffee, tea, juice, soda, wine or liquor — stimulating detoxification and weight loss while adding powerful antioxidants and restoring the body’s natural pH balance. Boosting energy is a natural result of detoxification.

Acidic diets have been linked to obesity, cancer, diabetes and arthritis. Stored body fat is the body’s natural defense to protect against the acid affecting organs. With no chemicals, synthetic additives or preservatives, Smooth 8 Cleansing Water neutralizes the acids, reducing fat storage and resulting in weight loss, increased energy, mental clarity and smoother skin.

Intrigued, I decided to give it a try. It’s completely tasteless being that it’s only ingredients are ionized water, potassium, and magnesium. For someone like me, this isn’t a must-have product because I already drink plenty of ionized water, plus I have potassium in one of my daily supplements and my children and I take regular magnesium baths.

For someone less “crunchy” and health-conscious than myself, this would be an excellent product though! No fuss, no muss, just put a few drops in your water or whatever beverage you are drinking. Definitely a low-maintenance, easy way to incorporate these health benefits into your busy lifestyle.

drink more water

According to Dr. Robert O. Young, the author of The pH Miracle for Weight loss, acidity in the body is one of the biggest causes of obesity. Smooth 8 kills harmful bacteria, yeast and other pathogens including e coli and salmonella. Put 20 drops in water for any food you want to clean as well as in your drinking water – far safer than chlorine and ammonia in most drinking water!

Watch the video and see what you think…

Not only is body acidity known to be a leading cause of obesity, it can contribute to cancer as well. Cancer has a much harder time growing and producing in an alkaline environment. I’m sure Smooth 8 doesn’t want to claim to help prevent cancer, but in reality, they could since decreasing the acidity level in your body would most definitely help.

A one-ounce 600-drop bottle of Smooth 8 is only $19.95. Daily care suggests 10-20 drops per beverage, up to 60 drops per day. This means, ideally you would need at least 1 bottle per month, no more than 2 bottles per month.

How to Keep Your Skin Looking Young and Beautiful

It’s a cruel fact of life that we can’t stay young forever. While most people accept that sooner or later they have to grow older, that doesn’t mean that their skin has to look older too. In fact, I’m always looking for ways to help my skin look full, youthful and healthy for as long as possible. Although I use a lot of great products to do this, from day creams with sun protection, night creams and whitening lotions for those stubborn spots of discoloration, there are ways that you can keep your skin looking young from the inside out.

In a perfect world, there’d be no temptation; no sugar, no alcohol, and we’d all get at least eight hours of hours sleep each night. Life as a busy mom of two doesn’t always run as smoothly as all that, however, and the late nights, early starts and sweet temptations can cause unsightly blemishes and even a few fine lines.

water

So, what can we do about this? One of the easiest ways I found to help my skin look good was to start drinking more water. I know that this sounds as if it’s a really simple solution to an ongoing problem, and it can really be that easy. By upping your water intake, you can flush out toxins and keep your skin looking clear and blemish free. Also, when you drink more water, you’re less inclined to reach for a can of diet soda, which is full of sugar and other assorted chemicals that can wreak havoc on your skin. You’ll also be less likely to snack during the day, so you can even trim a few pounds off of your frame in the process!

However, no matter how much water you drink, some skin issues, such as skin tone, won’t be entirely cleared, and you’ll need some extra help to correct them. Skin issues such as acne and discoloration can be pretty stubborn. If you have adult acne (and if you do, you have my deepest sympathy, for it’s not very nice) then make sure you are using the correct products or medications for your skin, to help stop it being so reactive. If you have a few discolorations, such as dark spots or blemishes, which I’ve also suffered from, whitening lotions can really help to make them less noticeable. I highly recommend shopping around for this type of product. It can work wonders on those unsightly marks, and some products have been specially created for aging skin and the issues it can face.

Remember, growing old is a fact of life, but you can cheat a little while you age gracefully. Look into what options are available to you, and see what you can do to help your skin. Remember, it could be as easy as reaching for a bottle of water!

Get Outside and Go Hiking This Summer!

Exercise is important to good health and general well-being, so it is never too late to begin a regular routine. The more active you are the more energy you expend in the form of calories. If your aim is to lose weight, expending more calories than you take in from eating is an important step in weight loss; unless you’re already very active, anyone will benefit from an increase in their exercise level. One of the best in terms of initial cost, variable levels of exertion and overall benefit, hiking is one of the best exercises for people.

hiking boots

The first step in preparing for hiking as an aerobic activity is making sure you have the right gear. Hiking is an outdoor activity and your feet should be adequately prepared for walking on uneven ground over natural landscapes. A good pair of walking shoes or even a pair of hiking boots from a reputable dealer like theclymb.com is necessary for proper protection. Quality and more importantly comfort are the main factors in choosing your hiking footwear. In making the footwear choices, you should consider what sort of hiking trips you’re going to be making.

For a beginner, it is best to start off slowly; choose even paths with gentle inclines and clearly marked trails. Local parks often have walking tracks that provide the interesting sights of nature while also providing a clean and accessible path to follow. After you have decided what sort of footwear you will need, you should give them adequate break-in time. It is not advisable to wear a pair of hiking shoes or boots directly from the box to the outdoors. If the product description does not give a clear idea, ask a sales representative or phone the shoe or boot manufacturer.

With your new footwear in hand and your hiking path chosen, it is time to consider anything else you might need, like natural fiber socks, a plastic reusable water-bottle for proper hydration, sunscreen, a backpack to carry with if you plan to be outdoors for long periods, and even a walking stick. If you’re new, don’t forget to pace yourself! Injuries from being improperly prepared will derail an exercise program before it has begun.

Don’t forget to join theclymb.com to get all the gear you need at up to 70% off retail price! I just joined and I am amazed at what a huge selection they have. Can’t wait to get some new running sneakers…

How To Avoid Belly Bloat And Other Tips

If you are a fan of this blog then you might remember that last summer I lost 18 pounds in 8 weeks on the Dukan Diet. I learned SO much about health and nutrition, reading the book The Dukan Diet: 2 Steps to Lose the Weight, 2 Steps to Keep It Off Forever. It helped me learn what foods would help me lose weight and keep the weight off and which foods I should avoid all together.

I have done a pretty remarkable job (*pats self on back*) at staying around or under my target weight all winter, even though I did gain about 5 pounds over the holiday season… I’m still thinking about getting “bikini perfect” soon though because Lord knows I wouldn’t want to bare-all right now! Good gracious…

Did you know there are “good for you” foods that can actually make you look and feel fat?

Franci Cohan - NutritionistWe are excited to share with you these tips and tricks on how to avoid belly bloat from certified nutritionist Franci Cohen suggests these meals that will not give you a bulging belly.

For a girl’s night out: Don’t be afraid to have a large meal beforehand (large meaning more than just a PB&J). If you are planning for an active night, whether dancing, bowling or party hopping, you will need the fuel. Franci Cohen has created the perfect meal for this situation:

  • 1 grilled chicken breast (approx 4 oz)
  • 1/2 cup cooked brown rice and lentils
  • 1 cup steamed string beans

This combo will fill you up without weighing you down, and will give you the energy you need to dance the night away!

For a dinner- date: You’re wearing a stunning new BCBG dress that already had to be zipped up by your roommate. When you’re at the restaurant with your guy refrain from ordering a salad to make it look like you’re being healthy. All the veggies in the salad will actually cause your stomach to bloat more. Franci advises that a fish dish with one side of grilled veggies is the way to go! “Wild Salmon is jam-packed with heart healthy vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids. If Salmon is not an option, mackerel, sea bass and lemon sole are all good options as well. As for the veggies, try to steer clear of cruciferous veggies (such as cauliflower, broccoli) that can cause bloating. Instead opt for grilled zucchini, asparagus, or carrots – which will keep your tummy tamed!”

For a day at the beach: It’s finally getting warm out and you can take that bathing suit out of hiding. If you’re going to the beach you need a healthy, energizing meal to get you through the morning but you don’t want it to show in your stomach.  You’re probably thinking that the easiest thing to eat before you head out is some Special K with skim milk. It’s low in calories after all, right? It doesn’t matter how low-cal it is, the dairy and multi-grains will expand in your intestines, causing your gut to stick out. Instead of cereal, Franci has an awesome recipe for oatmeal pancakes. Take 1/2 cup raw oats, 3 egg whites, 1/2 apple, and a dash of cinnamon and throw in a blender to create the pancake mix. This high fiber non-fat breakfast choice offers whole grain fiber plus additional fiber from the apple, and protein from the egg whites. It’s a great filling way to start the day, and will not create any abdominal gas or bloating, so you can go bikini-bare with ease!

For an afternoon luncheon: Eating a well-balanced lunch is essential for boosting energy and productivity; giving you power over that mid-day slump and keeping your metabolism active.  A lot of times people want to skip lunch in hopes of losing weight and grab an energy drink to keep them going. This is so bad! The carbonation from an energy drink will make you more bloated then a light lunch. Franci says, “For a mid-day luncheon, your best bet is a salad chock-full of fresh veggies and greens, and topped with a piece of grilled fish, low-fat tuna salad, or fresh turkey breast slices. Throw a few walnuts or almonds on top and dress with a low fat/low sugar dressing, to finish off your delicious salad creation!”

For traveling days: These days airports are getting bigger and so are the food courts. It’s tempting to give in to the convenience of fast travel food, but the combination of a high-sodium smorgasbord and air travel equals a very bloated body from head to toe. You absolutely must resist because there are better options. Eat before you leave for the airport.  Franci suggests packing your carry-on with fruits, veggies, and granola bars. Believe it or not these are available at kiosks. Also, avoid the beverage service on board. Stick to water, you will have a happier flight and feel revived upon arriving at your destination!

Reader Mindy B. Lost 49lbs on The Dukan Diet!

As you know, I lost 18 pounds in 8 weeks on the Dukan Diet. I have been easily maintaining my new weight through the 4th and final phase of The Dukan Diet. I feel like I have a whole new lease on life!

Side by side comparison of June 18th at 128 pounds till August 11th at 110 pounds.

Upon reading about my success, it encouraged a lot of other women to try The Dukan Diet, which absolutely thrills me. I am so glad to be an inspiration to women and help them on their quest to happiness and health.

One of our winner’s of the Dukan Diet Prize Packs Giveaway wanted to share her story of weight loss with you lovely ladies as another example of how GREAT the Dukan Diet works!

Mindy says:

I started following the Dukan Diet on August 13, 2012. As of today, my total loss is 49 lbs!!!!

The diet is so easy to follow and I am never hungry. My standard breakfast of choice is non-fat Greek Yogurt with 1 tablespoon of Goji Berries and 1-2 tablespoons of oat bran. I keep the berries and oat bran at my desk at work, and bring the yogurt, which I purchase in bulk on sale, from home. When I have to eat lunch on the run, I feast on a package of smoked salmon. I frequently have a grilled salmon fillet that I get fresh from the counter at Whole Foods. When I am having a celebration with my family, I bring non-fat Ricotta cheese for my dessert. The only measuring or limits are really the oat bran and Goji Berries. After the first week, I was not even missing bread or sugar.

The biggest trick is to make sure you are never hungry. Keep snacks at work that you can turn to in order to avoid temptation. Eat as much as you need to of the permissible foods to prevent hunger. Always keep a variety of permissible proteins and veggies on hand. Drink the water, and know that there will be days where there are fluctuations in the wrong direction that are likely related to a need for more fiber. Just keep following the diet and drink more water and do not miss the oat bran, and you will get past it.

The products are quite helpful but not at all required. I make a sort of turkey chili with ground turkey, crushed tomato, coriander and cumin, and the Shirataki noodles. I served it to a friend who is not on Dukan, and she love it!

This diet has been so easy to follow and so easy to stay faithful to, and the results speak for themselves. In addition to the weight loss, my overall health has improved, and suggestions of one of my doctors to eliminate fried and fatty or greasy foods was already being addressed.

I highly recommend Dukan to anyone who is serious about losing weight in a healthy manner.

Thank you so much to Mindy for sharing her on-going success story with us! I hope this inspires you to reach your weight loss goals! I encourage you to purchase the book The Dukan Diet: 2 Steps to Lose the Weight, 2 Steps to Keep It Off Forever and give it a try!
