Trend Alert: Flared Denim for Fall 2010

You know what trend I can’t believe is back? Flared jeans! I never thought they would come back in style, but here they are! We’re seeing a lot of high waisted styles too, which I’m sure you ladies will be happy about.

More stores are carrying flared jeans now and at amazingly affordable prices so you won’t have to invest in a style that might not last more than a year or two. I personally don’t think this trend will last as long as skinny jeans have, but I could be wrong!

Check out these flared jeans for under $100

What do you think of flared jeans? Do you have any flared jeans already in your closet? If not, will you buy a pair to rock this Fall?

Are You Wearing Military Chic?

It seems like every fashion magazine out there has been hyping Military Chic as the hot trend for Fall.  From jackets to boots to utility belts, olive green and camo prints are everywhere.  At least in the magazines.  Even the current issue of Us Weekly has 3 full pages of military style, and giving credit where credit is due, the style editors did a fantastic job of selecting some cute pieces and fun military accessories to feature in the spread. My personal favorite is the super chic (and super pricey!) Prada leather camo Saffiano tote, weighing in at $2,495.

Everyone is pushing military…Burberry, Nannette Lepore, Prada, Rag & Bone, H&M, Forever 21…even the venerable House of Chanel launched it’s newest line of nail lacquers called Les Khakis de Chanel.  Hmmm…

However, I’m confused.  I haven’t seen ANYONE rocking a military inspired outfit in my daily travels.  Sure, there is the occasional cargo jacket, but most of them seem to be worn by people who don’t look like they put a whole lot of effort into a chic, military inspired outfit.  Is it because olive green and khaki are colors that can make you look washed out?  Is the trend too trendy or too pricey?  Are the accessories too limiting?  So The Fashionable Housewife would like to ask you:  Are you wearing Military this Fall?  Have you found some cute pieces and accessories that work with your wardrobe?  If so, tell us about them.  What did you buy?  How do you wear it?  Leave us a comment and let us know.

October is BUY NOTHING NEW MONTH

Old is the new new this October!  In Salvos Stores in Australia, October is BUY NOTHING NEW MONTH. You don’t have to travel around the world to get on board for having more money in your pockets, more time on your hands and  leaving a lighter carbon footprint.

Instead of a short-term, throw away attitude to “stuff”, BUY NOTHING NEW MONTH extends the life cycle of goods, maximizes the embedded cost and resources in the stuff we buy, and gives an introduction to the re-cycled, free-cycled, up-cycled, secondhand and sustainable alternatives that are better for you, your wallet and the planet.  BUY NOTHING NEW MONTH doesn’t mean going without.  Make  a BUY NOTHING NEW pledge and you can beg, barter and swap – even buy – what you need, as long as it is pre-loved.  This of course excludes necessities like food, drink, hygiene products and medicines, but you get the idea.

BUY NOTHING NEW MONTH also shows that going green doesn’t have to be expensive.  By adapting our attitudes and approach, going green can be a money saving path to socially responsible consumption.  According to Affluenza author and BUY NOTHING NEW supporter Clive Hamilton, “…consumption today often involves buying things we don’t need, with money we don’t have, to impress people we don’t like!  BUY NOTHING NEW is about spending our time and money more thoughtfully.

This October, think about where stuff comes from, where it’s going, its embedded costs and what are the alternatives.  Make a point to do something green each day.  Your wallet will thank you and  your planet will thank you.  You might even become more creative.  What do you think?   Could you go an entire month without buying something new?

Fall 2010 Shoe Trends: Desert Boots

Military Style is the biggest look of Fall 2010, so it’s not surprising that desert boots have come back around.  This old-school style is one of the most current shoes of the season.  If you like it, it’s definitely the time to wear it!

The most classic incarnation of the desert boot has the following characteristics:

  • Suede
  • Rubber crepe sole
  • Lace-up
  • Low rise

However, if that doesn’t work for you, there still might be a version that does.  Some of the newer styles feature leather and stacked heels, so keep shopping until you find the right pair for your wardrobe.  Check out a few options below:

Desert Boots

1. Gee WaWa Women’s Gobi Ankle Boot

2. Sam Edelman Effie Ankle Boot

3. Dr. Martens Viviana 2 Eye Desert Boot

4. Clarks Desert Trek Oxford

5. indigo by Clarks Water Row Boot

6. Bernardo Sahara Desert Ankle Boot

As a petite, I’m always seeking elegance and height in my shoes, so this is a tough style for me.  I like the Sam Edelman and indigo by Clarks versions, though, and could see myself wearing both of those.

This shoe pairs easily with jeans (skinny, bootcut, and straight-leg) and the new skinny cargo pant.  If you’re more adventurous, you can try it with dresses and skirts as well.  Just remember to keep the whole look balanced by pairing desert boots with more streamlined, tailored pieces.

Fall 2010 Fashion Trends: Animal Prints

Animal prints are always around and always in stores, but this year they are more important than ever. Whether you want an entire dress of leopard spots or just a splash of style with animal print accessories, you’ll be on-trend if you incorporate this trend into your Fall wardrobe.

We searched around for some cute animal print items that you could nab for under $100 and we found TONS – most around $20 or $30! Handbags, shoes, dresses, belts, hats, shirts and more!

Check it out…

Will you be trying animal prints this season?
