Loving Wide Leg Pants for Summer…

Having spent the last two years in skinny jeans and jeggings, I was both excited and anxious to see that wide leg pallazo pants are back in style.  It’s hard to transition from the super sleek to the wide and slouchy, but I feel like my wardrobe has lots of new pairing options now, and in some ways I feel like I have a whole new figure!  The trick to finding wide leg pants that flatter and slim is to look for drapey materials in crepe, silk or rayon or lightweight jersey.  Stay away from heavy or stiff fabrics, and unless you are super slim, avoid any pleating.  Free People (www.freepeople.com) makes two pairs of wide leg pants that I love.  I purchased the Floral Fields Wide Leg Pant last week and haven’t taken them off!  They are super flattering and the material is the perfect summer weight.

The well named Drapey Wide Leg pant, again by Free People, is another great choice for the warm days of summer.

Wide leg pants are easy to dress up with heels and crisp accessories, or down with sandals and a comfortable tee.  For a leaner, cleaner look, try to keep your upper half less voluminous with tighter fitting tops.  That way nobody will mistake you for going out in public in your pajamas!  Like bathing suits, you may have to try on a lot of pairs to find the perfect wide leg fit, but once you do, your options for summer fashion are endless.

Dip-Dye Looks for Summer

Maybe it’s the ungodly heat wave we’ve been suffering through, but when my Martha Stewart Living arrived in the mail today, it looked like the most refreshing thing in the world.  I think it’s because the cover featured a bunch of DIY dip-dye projects.

While I’m not up for the DIY crafts (since my DIY never turns out like Martha’s), it’s got me craving some similarly patterned apparel.

Now, two tricky things about this pattern:

  • Dip-dye owes its fresh appeal to the crisp contrast between very light areas of fabric and darker ones.  That can be flattering… or not.  But don’t automatically shy away from dip-dye just because of the horizontal color segments.  If you remember to coordinate the darker segments with any problem areas you might like to camouflage, you may find some pieces that really work for you.
  • This is a very summery look and– although it’s been hot for a couple of years now– a trendy one.  For me, that means I don’t want to spend a ton on it.  So while I might LOVE this maxi dress:

…It’s just more than I want to invest.  (Plus, I recently made a blood oath with myself promising to shun all strapless bras unless I’m dressing for a black-tie event, so I can’t go back on that.)

In fact, I’m struggling to find a dip dyed dress that comes with the price tag I want– given that the season’s already half over.  Banana Republic has some great looking shifts, but they’re still well over $100, so that’s a no-go for me.

I may have to settle for adding touches of dip-dye to my summer ensembles.

Maybe this uber-cute skirt?

Or something like this tee, which would look great with white pants and a lightweight denim jacket.

I’d also love to find some cute accessories in this pattern.  Maybe a bag or a tote?  That might even be something I’d be willing to try DIY.  What about you?  Are you feeling the dip-dye?  And have you had any success with creating your own dip-dye garments?

Decorating Tips from $100 Makeover’s Leslie Segrete- Part 1

If you enjoyed designer Leslie Segrete on Trading Spaces and While You Were Out, you definitely want to catch her latest show: A & E’s $100 Makeover

Like other favorites of the home makeover show genre, Leslie’s new project transforms cluttered, uninspired rooms into more liveable spaces– all with limited time and money (specifically $100 per room).  What makes this show fresh and interesting is the way Leslie maximizes her budget by utilizing the objects she finds in participants’ homes.  That can of paint you bought two years ago for the decorating project you never got around to?  She’ll use it on your weatherbeaten patio furniture– turning it into something fun again.  Those tablecloths your mother insisted you take even though they don’t come close to fitting your table?  No problem; Leslie’s a master at whipping up throw pillows and window treatments from unwanted linens.

Since we all have stuff lying around that could be put to better use and all love getting great home items for less, I think there’s a lot to learn and admire from the $100 Makeover‘s budget-friendly approach.  Recently, I got the chance to catch up with Leslie, and she graciously passed on some tips for TFH readers.

With grilling and gardens on my mind, my first question was obvious.  Since it’s summer entertaining season, what are some simple, inexpensive ways to liven up your patio for outdoor parties?

Leslie suggested “setting the stage” for the party with vibrant, colored tablewear.  She’s impressed with the acrylic dishes from the Ty Pennington collection at Sears

Ty Pennington floral drinkware collection at Sears.com

With a luscious selection of bright colors, cool patterns, and ombre styles available, just a bit can truly take your party from thrown-together barbecue to festive fete.  Since many of these pieces are currently on sale for as little as $0.99, they’ll hardly put a dent in your cocktail budget.  And if you’re looking to minimize expense even more, Leslie suggests adding just a few pieces to bring in that cheerful flavor.  Even a few glasses to hold your flatware will give your outdoor event a special touch.

If you’re open to making a larger investment (the kind you’ll enjoy long past your next party), Leslie recommends shopping the Jaclyn Smith outdoor collection at Kmart.  For a few hundred dollars, you may find some quality outdoor furniture that boosts your al fresco elegance many times over.

I’ve also had some luck finding colorful, vintage tablecloths on Ebay.  They add a fun, retro touch, and since they aren’t family heirlooms, I don’t mind when someone spills salsa on them.  Every stain is a story, right?

Stay tuned for more decorating and entertaining ideas from Leslie, and be sure to watch her on $100 Makeover on A&E, Saturdays at 10 AM Eastern/ Pacific!
