Easy Gluten Free Recipes In Cooking Light Cookbook

When I first heard that I was getting to review Cooking Light The Gluten-Free Cookbook: Simple Food Solutions for Everyday Meals, I was very excited! I am always looking for new recipes and ways to get healthy, tasty gluten free food into my allergic family. I especially appreciated the subtitle; “Simple Food Solutions for Everyday Meals.” Who doesn’t want dinner time to be simple everyday? I was all over this book.

The first part of the book starts off with a section that attempts to give a gluten free 101 class. It lists different sources of gluten, types of gluten free products, foods that are safe to eat, foods to avoid, and food that are questionable. It goes into types of gluten free substitutes and flours, and how to keep a safe kitchen when some people are gluten free and some are not. For someone who is brand new to going gluten free, this section would be very helpful.

Another feature that I appreciated throughout the book was the {Check for Gluten} phrase listed next to ingredients could be questionable, making sure that someone who is new to going gluten free double checks these ingredients to be sure they are safe. Some recipes are also identified by a Dairy Free icon. This is important, because many people who are allergic or cooking for someone allergic to gluten are also allergic to dairy. Although the book is most certainly not catered towards dairy free or multiple allergic people. There aren’t a lot of dairy free recipes. If someone has multiple food allergies, they will find themselves making a lot of substitutions. However, someone newly diagnosed as only needing to avoid gluten will find this book to be perfect for their situation.

The very first recipe we made, at my five year old’s request, was the Strawberry Muffins. Absolutely delicious! We substituted the fat free milk for coconut milk, and the butter for ghee to make it dairy free, and they came out wonderfully moist, which anyone who has done any gluten free baking knows is much more difficult to achieve.

The next recipe we tried was the Banana Breakfast Smoothie, against substituting the fat free milk for coconut milk, and the Greek yogurt for coconut yogurt. Again, another hit! Smoothies will definetly be a regular in the mornings around this house! So simple and so healthy for a delicious breakfast.

The other recipes that my family enjoyed from this cookbook were the Old-Fashioned All-American Meat Loaf, Herbes de Provence-Crusted Lamb Chops (my favorite), the Chicken Tacos with Mango-Avocado Salsa (my husband’s favorite), the Fresh Tomato, Sausage, and Pecorino Pasta, the Roasted Butternut Squash and Shallot Soup, and the Quick Chicken Noodle Soup.

The recipes ranged from super easy (like the smoothie), to more difficult in terms of locating the ingredients. I had never heard of Herbes de Provence before, and I had to wait a few weeks for them to arrive in the mail since my local stores did not carry this specific herbal spice combination (but it was worth it)!

I would absolutley reccommend the book to someone with no other allergies, who is brand new to going gluten free. There are a lot of excellent, varied options for every meal of the day, including some old favorites (like the meatloaf and chicken soup) modified for a gluten sensitive individual.

Look 10 years younger with Avon ANEW Genics

I have spent the better part of my 40s trying to look like I’m still in my 30s.  And a lot of that time and energy has been put into reducing and eliminating the signs of sun damage accrued over the years before SPF was a household word.  So when I was given the opportunity to test Avon’s new ANEW Genics product  I jumped at the chance.  Avon’s ANEW Genics Treatment Creme is a skincare breakthrough cream that claims to help you look 10 years younger in as little as 4 weeks.

Inspired by the discovery that everyone has a Youth Gene, Avon’s Genics formula is designed to stimulate your Youth Gene’s activity,** which slows down with age.  Now you can undo up to 10 years from the look of your skin.*  In 4 weeks, ANEW Genics  can improve the appearance of discolorations by up to 100%.***  and dramatically reduce the look of wrinkles.*

*Based on a consumer perception study of women 45-59.
**Based on testing in skin cells.
***Based on a dermatologist assessment of mottled pigmentation in a clinical study of subjects aged 45-59.

Having used the product for almost 4 weeks, I’m not sure that I look 10 years younger, but I can confirm that my skin definitely looks more radiant and my freckles and age spots are noticeably lighter.  (I have been wearing 50+ SPF sunblock all summer, so I’m sure that has helped, too.)  ANEW Genics Treatment Cream is intended for night time use, following cleansing, in place of your regular cream.  It has a fresh scent and doesn’t feel too heavy on your skin.  Priced at $38 for 1 once, ANEW Genics Treatment Creme is available exclusively throught Avon Representatives.

Land’s End Chinos: Bring on the Boys…

I don’t know what it is about boys and their ability to destroy pants, but ever since my son started crawling, he has managed to shred his way through literally hundreds of pairs of pants.  Even now that he is in middle school and forced to wear a school uniform, he (and his friends, I might add) manage to wear through the knees of pants in very short order.  Which can make for an expensive uniform if torn pants don’t fit the code!   I was recently given the opportunity to have him test drive a pair of Iron Knees® trousers from the Land’s End School Uniform department.

Plain Front Iron Knees Stain & Wrinkle Resistant Chino Pants

I was thrilled to notice that the material for both the trousers and the reinforcement is very lightweight yet durable, and there are no tell tale signs of extra material or bulk in the knee area.  The pants hang nicely on the leg.  My son likes the fit – he says that the waist is comfortable and the slimmer fit in the leg is “cool” – very important in middle school!  It has only been a week, but already the pants have survived three bouts in the laundry, some heavy duty grass stains, and a run in with a bottle of katsup.  The pants are winning.  They wash well, don’t require ironing, and there are no fuzzy patches in the knee area to indicate that there are any signs of wear.  According to the Land’s End Catalogue, the Plain Front Iron Knees Stain & Wrinkle Resistant Chino Pants are:

  • Reinforced with Iron Knees for incredible durability where he needs it most
  • 100% cotton fabric is stain-resistant, wrinkle-resistant & breathable
  • Tabs on the inside of the waist let him button in the right fit
  • Plain front
  • Slightly shorter rise gives him an up-to-date fit
  • Receive Preferred School contribution with purchase
  • This product is eligible to receive a logo
  • Built with Iron Knees® — a hidden polyester interlining at the knees that makes them super-durable where most pants fail the test time after time.  Machine wash. Imported.

We’re off to a good start, so if you are looking for durable, fashionable and yes – AFFORDABLE – pants for school, check out the Iron Knees chinos at Land’s End.   Available in slim, regular and husky sizes.  The Big Boy sizes range from 8 through 20 and cost $29.50 per pair.

Michael Simon Super Sassy Shirt Review

So I was lucky enough to have the chance to wear and ROCK the Michael Simon Short Sleeve Sequin Tee (in white but of course) and was sooooooooooo haaaaaapppppppppppy! The folks over at Michael Simon are definitely working some super awesome, high quality and sassy embellished garments.

The sleeves of this beauty is entirely coated in sequins. I know what you are thinking… You are thinking, well, those sequins are going to start coming off right away, but that’s where we are wrong (yes, I thought that too). Not only are these bad boys secure but if per chance the sequins do fall off? They send you a bunch of replacements. I am totally not worried about losing sass or nothin’ with this shirt. I already have plans to pair this with a pair of slim black pants, some sky high black heels and some gorgeous silver earrings to a Fashion Week Dinner I am attending. It’s that nice a shirt.

Besides helping me be more stylish, Michael Simon wants to help you be more stylish as well. We are totally running a giveaway with them right now, where you can win ANY item of your choice from their website. Does that intrigue you ladies? Well, it should. Giiiiiirrrrrrrrl, their stuff is so nice.

LAMO “Uptied” Shoe Review

If you know us here at The Fashionable Housewife, then you know that we are HUGE fans of… that’s right, SHOES! We have met shoes we didn’t like but we find that they are few and far between. Being that we appreciate shoes, especially those with a high comfort level without losing style, we thought we would share our newest find with you, our fabulous readers. LAMO (pronounced Lah-Mow) was kind enough to share/ I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to try out a pair of LAMO’s most recent sandal design for Spring/Summer, the Uptied in Navy (retails for $79.00). First, let me share a little about LAMO Sheepskin footwear with you. Their philosophy? Well, their brand philosophy goes FAR:

Fashion – They love fashion in all its facets, but mostly because it’s fun and a great way to let people express their personalities and moods.

Authenticity (and our personal favorite) – There is absolutely no arguing with the fact that one should have as many shoes as your closet and your external storage can possibly hold.  They’re crazy about shoes and they understand that special feeling when you find and capture that perfect pair. If it’s super cute, amazingly stylish and comfortable, it’s the footwear trifecta.

Respect – They reduce the environmental impact of their business as much as possible. Recycling and conscientious use of resources are a given, but they also continuously research and test ways to increase the use of Earth-friendly production methods and materials. They respect the rights of their workforce and their entire product line is made in factories that are strictly supervised and highly rated for compliance with international labor standards.

So I guess I don’t have to tell you guys that not only do we love them because they are shoemakers, we love them because they are super conscious of their earth, their workforce and their responsibilities.

OK, you ready to see what the “UPTIED” Sandals look like?

I was drawn to these sandals because I could see them making a name for themselves in my shoe closet, which is no easy feat (get it? Feat/Feet?). I imagined the darlings paired with chambray and khaki and denim, oh my! They seemed classic with a touch of sass. When I received them, my initial impression was that these were well made and even lovelier in person.

After my initial Ooooohing and Aaaaaahing over their looks (I know, how superficial of me), I started thinking about their functionality. Made from suede leather, Australian merino sheepskin and fleece, these sandals really struck me as HOT. Not hot as in “those are some hot shoes you have there girrrrl” but rather I am talking about how they really first impressed upon me how sweaty they were going to make my feet feel. The sandals are made from suede and sheepskin, with a heel full of fleece. I thought, “how the heck am I supposed to wear these in the hot Summer weather?!” But, I am ashamed to say, that I judged a book by its cover. After wearing these sandals, on some pretty warm days , I was extremely surprised at how cool my feet stayed, as if they were ventilated (besides obvious ventilation). LAMO calls this their temperature balancing properties and whatever that means, I am pretty sure it’s legitimate.

The suede insoles are buttery soft, the tie dyed lambskin straps/heels are comfortable without causing blisters and those strange fleece lined sandal heels? They are strangely comfortable without causing overheating of the tootsie. The shoes are made of such high quality materials and are really well made that I am pretty darn excited to bring a new shoe line into the family. It feels to me like  LAMO has found a nice balance between style and function, leaving this reviewer with nothing but nice things to say.

As if me professing my love of these sandals wasn’t enough, LAMO does something with every purchase of shoes that is truly admirable. LAMO operates on a Buy One/ Give One through Soles4Souls, which is the world’s largest provider of free shoes to people in need. For every pair of LAMO shoes that you buy, a pair of shoes reaches someone who desperately needs it. Something you or I may take for granted, is something that others may never have without the help of great organizations like Soles4Souls.

Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people like you. The charity distributes these shoes to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 14 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes (currently donating one pair every 7 seconds.) The shoes have been distributed to people in over 127 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States. Soles4Souls has been featured in Runner’s World, Ladies’ Home Journal, National Geographic’s Green Guide, and The New York Times. It has appeared on CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, BBC, CNN and thousands of regional news outlets across North America. Soles4Souls is a 501(c)(3) recognized by the IRS and donating parties are eligible for tax advantages. Anyone can join our cause, and we need your help.

Some other lovelies from LAMO’s most recent collection? Mmmmmmmmmm, Mama likes.

So to leave you ladies with my final thoughts on my new LAMO sandals, the design is what drew me in but the comfort is what will keep me coming back. Icing on the cake? LAMO’s charitable and conscious attitude.

Fantasy Jewelry Box Review

Between Fantasy Jewelry Box and Mimi’s the Look for Less, I have definitely got my jewelry needs under control. I had the opportunity to try (and fall in love with) a pair of earrings straight from the New Arrivals over at Fantasy Jewelry Box. I chose the Samura’s Bohemian Style Earrings because #1 I thought they looked like statement-worthy earrings and #2 I certainly thought that they were on trend to what the celebs and fashionistas seem to be wearing these days.

Samura’s Bohemian Style Turquoise & Coral Chandelier Earrings

Did these earrings meet my expectations?

Why yes, yes they did. The earrings were bigger than I had imagined them being but that being said, I don’t consider that to be a disappointment (though when I put them on the man was like “Whoa, those are the biggest earrings you have ever worn!” which is a false statement but he is a guy so I let it slide). I wore them to work with a white maxi dress and gold flat sandals, ensuring that I was wearing the earrings, not the other way around. I received compliments from every girl at work. These earrings were not lost on anyone. So when I wanted a statement-worthy jewelry statement? Well, that is what I got.  I directed multiple co-workers to FantasyJewelryBox.com because I honestly would buy the place out if the man would let me!

Some other pieces from Fantasy Jewelry Box that have been calling my name?

Addy’s Braided Gold Mesh Magnetic Bracelet, Muriel’s Large Multicolor Marble Design Cocktail Ring, Kalie’s Multicolor Jeweled Silver Boomerang Shape Necklace & Earrings Set

So are you in love yet? Well you are in luck ladies; we are currently giving away a $50 gift certificate to Fantasy Jewelry Box. Want to enter to win? Head over to our giveaway post and share your love!

50% Or More Off SWIM WEAR at Lands End

I know it’s kinda late in the season to be posting a swimwear review but I had to actually get outside and try it out before posting about it! If I spent all day on the computer, I wouldn’t be outside actually USING the swimsuit in order to review it! HA! So there is my very eloquent excuse for taking so long…

First off, Lands’ End is having a HUGE sale on swimwear! Women’s, Men’s, Girls and Boys! 50-70% off! Sale ends Tuesday (7/18/2011) though so HURRY!

Secondly…. Lands’ End rocks my world. They totally know how to make a great swimsuit, cover and slim all the right places and yet look alarmingly fashionable.

Course you can’t take my word for it. I am neither skinny, nor am I in shape, but I can still strike a pose when necessary….

That is the Beach Living Paisley Print Bandeau Tunic Swimsuit Top in White Paisley (Petite size 6) and the Beach Living SwimMini with Tummy Control in Solid Black (petite size 8).

The top has optional straps so you can wear it strapless, with one strap making it a halter, with straps over each shoulder (as I have it), or with the straps crisscrossed in back. Lots of versatility. I love that the sides are ruched and adjustable too. Very slimming! Best of all, it has a lightly padded front that both conceals and enhances. It fits great!

The bottom is very fitted and slimming. I received compliments of “Have you lost weight?” and “Wow, you look great for just having had a baby not that long ago!” so I guess the consensus is, it looks pretty good!

BOTH are on sale right now! The top is regularly $59.50 – NOW $20.83. The bottom is regularly $59.50 – NOW $23.80. Sale ends this Tuesday though so you have to hurry!!
