Beauty Review: CoverGirl’s New LashBlast Fusion Mascara

I love makeup, but I’m not super brand loyal. There are some items that I’ve experienced to be better than others (that’s the case for everything, isn’t it?) but I’m not afraid of getting my makeup staples at the drugstore… especially when it comes to mascara. The best known brands are the ones who tend to battle it out for shelf space in my makeup drawer, but I’m always willing to welcome a new competitor.

Enter CoverGirl’s new LashBlash Fusion Mascara. Hailed as CG’s first ever volume AND length mascara thanks to the new Fiber-Stretch Lengthening Formula, LashBlash Fusion is a serious contender. Personally, I’ve had varying degrees of success with CoverGirl items over the years – their base tends to make me break out, but one of their blush shades was the first I ever owned, so it holds a very special place in my heart – and I was really excited to try out this new formula.

You’ll notice before you even put it on that the brush looks a little… different. It’s like your basic mascara brush on steroids. The bristles are really flexible and nothing like your standard applicator, but they seemed to keep a lot of mascara on the wand without dripping or clumping (you know it’s going to be a bad sign when the product is clumpy before you even put it on. SO glad that didn’t happen here) and it looked quite even.

But we all know where the real test for quality is… on the eyes. One eye has LashBlast Fusion on; the other is bare.

Let’s see if you can tell the difference:

Okay, obviously it’s the one on the right. I’m wearing two coats of the Black Brown shade, and I’m pleasantly surprised. There’s nothing all that amazing about it (and, to be honest, it doesn’t lengthen or thicken any more than my other CG mascaras… or other brands for that matter), but it didn’t clump and ended with a clean, easy result. I see this as a great product especially for women who prefer looking as natural as possible, but still want to enhance the features they have.

I debated on comparing it to another mascara in my collection, but the look wasn’t fair when I photographed it… not because the LashBlast Fusion didn’t hold up, but the Black and Very Black mascaras I tend to own look far more pronounced in pictures.

Final verdict: I like it. I doesn’t do anything different for me, but it also didn’t let me down. I might get it next time I’m in the market for mascara – at $8.99, it’s around the average drugstore mascara price – but I’m not dying if I don’t have it.

What are your thoughts? When CoverGirl’s LashBlast Fusion comes out next month (April 2010) nationwide, will you be picking up a bottle or not? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Review: CoverGirl LashBlast Length Mascara

CoverGirl LashBlast Length MascaraAs you know, I am huge fan of the original Covergirl LashBlast Mascara. If you are a fan too, then you’ll probably like the new CoverGirl LashBlast Length Mascara.

With a special pre-sale that started August 17 and a full-blown release in early September, the new lengthening mascara

CoverGirl’s new Elasta-Nylon™ formula flexes without flaking or clumping. It dries soft so you can layer it for an even more dramatic look. Because this formula is so rich and supple on your lashes, you won’t regret it if you leave it on overnight either. It’s also very easy to remove at night with warm water and a gentle makeup remover like Olay Mascara + Make-up Remover, unlike most lengthening mascaras.

While CoverGirl was very proud of their new longer brush with over 450 bristles, I’m personally not a huge fan. Maybe I’m clumsy or perhaps I’m just too used to the gigantic brush on the original LashBlast Mascara or it could be a little of both! Either way, I feel that the new longer brush is a little too long and actually makes it harder to control when applying it.

They claim that the flexible lengthening formula makes your lashes appear about 80% longer than your bare little lashes look on their own. This part I have to agree with. You can actually see the little nylon fibers on the brush and they attach to your lashes to create amazing length. If you can manage the brush and apply it properly, it makes your lashes look amazing. I only wish they had put this new lengthening formula in the original LashBlast container.

To be fair, I wasn’t crazy about the fat orange LashBlast container when it first came out. It took a while to get used to it. But now that I know how to handle and maneuver it, I love it! And after using it almost every single day for like 6 months or more, it’s kinda difficult to switch to a new brush and container that is pretty much the opposite in design.

With a price tag of $7, you can afford to give this on a try if you are:

    a. a fan of the original Lash Blast formula
    b. need a new tube of mascara or
    c. want longer lashes without the flaking

All in all, I definitely like it, but it’s not my favorite. Only because I usually go for a more dramatic look and I prefer fullness over length. My mascara of choice is still CoverGirl LashBlast Luxe Shimmery Volumizing Mascara in Black Cabernet.

Does Mascara Really Have An Expiration Date?

Make-upAll cosmetics can “go bad” after sitting around for any length of time, but most beauty products don’t come with an expiration date on the label. When it comes to lipstick, you can usually smell when the oils have become rancid. And with liquid makeup and moisturizers, the ingredients can separate if they sit unused for any length of time. When it comes to mascara though, you don’t want to wait around for a foul smell to occur before you toss it.

Mascara and liquid eyeliners should be throw away and replaced every three to six months. This is not a marketing scheme to get you to buy more mascara, believe it or not.

At first, I thought replacing mascara every three months was absurd. Why should I throw it away before it’s empty? I mean, if you are buying a $6 tube of mascara, replacing it every 3 months doesn’t sound very wasteful. That’s only $2 a month for beautiful eyes. Not bad. However, if you’re spending upwards of $20 for mascara, replacing it every 3 months just sounds wasteful and downright silly!

Truth is, whether you pay $6 or $26, you are still going to get a buildup of bacteria if you aren’t careful with your mascara. Follow these guidelines below to make your mascara go the distance.

Make Mascara Last Longer:

  • NEVER share your mascara. Ever. Doesn’t matter if it’s your best friend or your daughter, eyelashes have mite and dust and all kinds of things on them. Eyelashes are made to protect your eyes from bacteria etc, so they are catching all those things you don’t want in your eyes. By letting someone else use your mascara, you are getting whatever crap has collected on their eyelashes in your mascara, then you are introducing it to your own eyelashes. Gross!
  • Wash your face and eyelashes before applying mascara. Don’t add additional coats of mascara again during the day to freshen your look. Whatever has fallen on your eyelashes since you washed them and applied the first coat, will then go into your tube of mascara and potentially contaminate it.
  • Clean your mascara wand every month. Use a gentle soap, preferably sulfate-free, and let the wand dry completely before reinserting it into the tube of mascara.
  • Stop using all your eye makeup if you get conjunctivitis or any other eye illness. Immediately throw away all your eye makeup products like eye liner and mascara and replace it only after your infection has been away for at least 4 weeks.

By following these simple steps, you can make your mascara last a lot longer than 3 months. Practice good hygiene and cleanliness with your mascara and it will last till the tube is empty, which usually takes about 4-6 months with daily use. It’s also best to only have 1 or 2 tubes of mascara at a time so you can use them up in a reasonable amount of time before they go rancid. Keeping used tubes of mascara around longer than 6 months isn’t a great idea. However, you can keep bran new, unopened tubes of mascara around for up to 2 years.

If you don’t follow the above steps to help keep your tube of mascara clean, you risk contamination and infections. Ladies who do not practice good hygiene with their mascara should definitely replace it every 3 months.

Make sure to follow the guidelines above to keep your mascara clean. And remember that every time you pump the mascara wand, air gets into the tube. This creates a possible breeding ground for germs and eye mites. Not only that, it can make your mascara dry out and get clumpy much sooner.

You should never pump the wand back in and out to get the mascara on the brush. Simple unscrew the top and swish the wand around the in the tube before you pull it out. Think of it in the same way you would clean a bottle with a bottle brush. A gentle sweeping motion while the wand is still inside the tube will get an adequate amount of mascara on the brush and you’ll be ready to apply it to your lashes. When your mascara starts getting clumpy or smells funny, throw it out!

NEW! CoverGirl LashBlast Length Mascara

covergirl_lashblastlength

Another fabulous products from CoverGirl! NEW LashBlast Length Mascara contains nylon for lashes that are 80 percent longer and they won’t flake or break all day.

Cover_Girl_LashBlast_Length_mainUnless you live under a rock, you probably know by now that I’m pretty much the unofficial spokesperson for the original CoverGirl LashBlast Mascara. It’s my absolute favorite mascara in the whole world. I wear it every single day and I go through at least 4 tubes a year. I’m a total LashBlast addict. Nothing else measures up in my opinion. Plus, you can’t beat the price! (around $6!)

My other favorite mascara is CoverGirl LashBlast Luxe Mascara in Black Cabernet. The Luxe line has a bit of a shimmer to it, that makes it perfect for evening or with makeup looks that feature the eyes.

So needless to say, I’m really looking forward trying the new LashBlast Length Mascara!! I’ll review it very soon and let you know what I think.

With limited quantities available, visit COVERGIRL.COM/lashblastlength starting August 17 for early purchase. (The link will not work until the 17th, so please don’t freak out if you click on the link and can’t find the mascara!!!)
