Fall 2009 Shoes & Footwear Trends

It’s no secret… I’m completely obsessed with shoes. I just realized this last weekend that I got 11 new pairs of shoes in August. I’m pretty sure I need a 12 step program…

And since I wasn’t able to fit Fashion Week NYC into my schedule this time around, I decided to have a little Fashion Week of my own here on The Fashionable Housewife and feature all my favorite Fall 2009 shoe trends all this week! If you love shoes as much as I do, you’re probably doing a little happy dance right now…

Timeless footwear is top trendy right now. The main trend for shoes this Fall 2009-Winter 2010 are Ankle Boots and Over-The-Knee Boots. I’m also loving that purple is going to be popular again this Fall.

Shoe Trends For Fall 2009:

  • Ankle Boots & Booties
  • Knee High Boots
  • Thigh High Boots / Over The Knee Boots
  • Velvet
  • Studs, zippers and oversized buckles
  • Purple
  • Ballet Flats & Low Heels
  • Super High Platform Heels

In this economy, designers aren’t being as extravagant as they usually are. Simple and easy-to-wear styles are tres chic for Fall 2009.

Each day this week, I’ll highlight each trend and feature my favorite pick for each trend as well as many other options for all you gals that can’t resist shoe shopping!

Fall 2009 Fashion Week Trend: Vintage Brooches

Fall2009_brooches

Add a dose of instant style to any outfit by adding a gorgeous brooch. There are so many beautiful pins and brooches out there to choose from. Choose a bold statement-making brooch (a la Carrie from Sex and the City), or choose a smaller, more classic vintage brooch.

BroochlargeI found a lovely selection of vintage brooches at Trunk Show Chic, one of my new favorite websites for affordable jewelry.

With prices starting at $15, you can find a cute brooch to spice up your Fall outfits. And brooches are also handy to tighten a dress that’s too big. Watch this video on YouTube.com to see Rachel Zoe demonstrate how to fix a dress that’s a few sizes too large with a simple brooch.

The nice thing about a stylish brooch is that it’s versatile. You can wear it as a hairclip, you can pin it to the bottom of a skirt, you can even wear it on a chain to create your own necklace. I like using vintage brooches to add style to a simple black dress, spice up a boring jacket, or even to secure my pashminas or other scarves.

I had a boring looking handbag that I really liked the size of, but it was just plain. So I added a cool antique brooch to it that I picked up at a thrift store. It had cool little gems dangling off it and sparkly crystals. It turned a boring bag into a really unique handbag that I get compliments on all the time!

What do you think? Would you wear a brooch?

Exclusive Makeup Tutorial For Geren Ford’s Runway Model Look

stephanie_florStephanie Flor, Key Makeup Artist for Geren Lockhart’s fashion label, Geren Ford, at the 2009 New York fashion week show held at Milk Studios. Stephanie sat down to tell us how to re-create this stunning smokey eye look.

“When Geren Ford asked me to Key the direction of the Makeup for the second Season I was not blown away for the opportunity but by the inspiration behind the collection and the important connection to the makeup, hair and clothing!!! Models were lined up on a stage with the NYC Hudson river as their backdrop.” says Stephanie Flor.

“Makeup was very smoked out on the lid. We wanted to add depth and inner darkness to the flawless face. Using airbrush foundation we were able to achieve the most natural coat which gave us the freedom to focus on the eyes and create a seduction of blending the blacks. The lips were nude in color and the eyebrows were concealed with a lighter foundation using a brow brush. Cheeks were left natural with only contour as the separation on the cheeks.”

To create the look, the following products were used:

Everyday Girl Tip on creating the runway look of Geren Ford Fall 2009

“This is definitely not a day look but if our looking to have a good time after hours, this look is the right key to getting you noticed. My tip for an everyday kind of girl is to not go over the crease of the eye, the higher you go on the crease the more the eye will push back. if you just want that sexy smokey eye just blend blend the darkest black up to the crease and then with a kohl liner like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero, line your inner and upper rim from thin to thick on to the edge of the eye. And always mascara mascara mascara… try CoverGirl LashBlast Mascara in “Black”icon. It’s amazing. Also play around with color. A great way to add this effect without it being to black is by using a colorful shadow on the inner part of the eye. My favorite shadow to use are the Yaby Pearl Paints which are pigmented like not other in the market. By playing with color your able to always have a sexy flirty eye without being to mysterious.

Celebrity Fashion: Michelle Obama’s Election Night Dress

Everyone is talking about Michelle Obama’s Election Night dress. Was it good? Was it bad? We want to know what you thought about it!

The interesting red and black dress that Michelle Obama wore Tuesday night in Chicago came from the spring 2009 runway collection of Narciso Rodriguez, who is one of the most critically acclaimed designers from this year’s Fashion Week.

The dress (seen above) has a starburst of red across the bodice with a crossover sash of black. It wasn’t the best dress to begin with, but with the black cardigan on top, I thought it was a very unflattering style choice on her part. Especially after seeing so many nice outfits from her during the Obama 2008 campaign.

I also didn’t like the dress from the back. Someone get that woman a pair of Spanx!!!

Overall, I was just really unimpressed. I didn’t love the dress and I definitely didn’t love it on her. It’s nothing personal against Michelle Obama or Narciso Rodriguez, I just hated the dress!
