Fall 2010 Shoe Trends: Square Toes

If you have trouble finding a pointy-toed shoe that’s comfortable and feel round toes aren’t flattering, you’re in luck this season!  Square-toed loafers, flats, and pumps are a great compromise, and they’re back in fashion in a big way.

You can color me delighted, since I find this style both comfortable and fabulous.  It’s a perfect complement to the the trousers and pencil skirts that are currently popular.  As an added plus, this preppy staple has a timeless feel– regardless of whether it’s strictly on trend.  So give yourself permission to invest if you find a perfect pair.  A few I like:

Fall 2010 Shoe Trends: Studs

Visible hardware is a big trend this Fall.  While plenty of zippers and laces are showing up on shoes, studs are the dominant way this trend is appearing in footwear.

This detail melds nicely with the 80s Revival and Rocker Chic trends, and it’s a great way to add a 2010 edge to your perennial basics.

Just a few ways to wear studded (or studly, if you prefer!) footwear:

Shoe Studs

1. Old Navy Studded Faux-Leather Ballet Flats

2. FRYE Emma Honeycomb Stud Flat

3. Lovely People Riddler Studs Boot

4. FRYE Colette Vintage Stud Wedge

5. Dolce Vita Stud Boot

6. Unisa Shoes Cherish Studded Ankle Boots

I really, really like all of these and could honestly see myself clearing out a space in my shoe rack for any of them.  If I had to pick an absolute favorite, I’d say the FRYE Emma Flats– both because navy is so hot and because I’m currently focused on expanding my flats wardrobe.  The Old Navy Flats deserve some serious consideration, too, though; for less than $20, they’re an incredible buy!

Fall 2010 Shoe Trends: Open-toe Platforms and Wedges

I grew up with a lot of fashion RULES.  You know what I mean: “no white pants after Labor Day” “velvet only between Halloween and Valentine’s.”

These days, many fashionistas just ignore such bygone distinctions, whipping out suede in July and chiffon in December.  I love a free and creative approach to style so I applaud that, even if I’m too traditional to always join in.  Even so, there’s one fashion rule I’ve happily been breaking for years now: open-toe only in Spring in Summer.  I gleefully sport peep-toes year round, which gives me an excuse (and motivation) to keep my pedicure maintained.

That’s especially good news for me this year; open-toe platforms and wedges are a big look this Fall.  Bonus: they’re a good transition style while you’re waiting for the temps to catch up to your wardrobe.  Pair them with slim skirts and pants for the most up-to-date look.

Open Toe Platforms

1. Steve Madden Warrick Platforms

2. Steve Madden Daynty Open-Toe Clogs

3. Seychelles Hawk Open-Toe Pumps

4. MICHAEL Michael Kors St. Marks Open Toe Platforms

5. Bella Vita View Booties

To be totally honest, this isn’t my favorite of the fall shoe trends.  I typically graduate to less clunky styles.  However, even I could get really into those

What about you?  Do you see yourself clearing out a space for a pair of open-toe platforms or wedges?

Fall 2010 Shoe Trends: Desert Boots

Military Style is the biggest look of Fall 2010, so it’s not surprising that desert boots have come back around.  This old-school style is one of the most current shoes of the season.  If you like it, it’s definitely the time to wear it!

The most classic incarnation of the desert boot has the following characteristics:

  • Suede
  • Rubber crepe sole
  • Lace-up
  • Low rise

However, if that doesn’t work for you, there still might be a version that does.  Some of the newer styles feature leather and stacked heels, so keep shopping until you find the right pair for your wardrobe.  Check out a few options below:

Desert Boots

1. Gee WaWa Women’s Gobi Ankle Boot

2. Sam Edelman Effie Ankle Boot

3. Dr. Martens Viviana 2 Eye Desert Boot

4. Clarks Desert Trek Oxford

5. indigo by Clarks Water Row Boot

6. Bernardo Sahara Desert Ankle Boot

As a petite, I’m always seeking elegance and height in my shoes, so this is a tough style for me.  I like the Sam Edelman and indigo by Clarks versions, though, and could see myself wearing both of those.

This shoe pairs easily with jeans (skinny, bootcut, and straight-leg) and the new skinny cargo pant.  If you’re more adventurous, you can try it with dresses and skirts as well.  Just remember to keep the whole look balanced by pairing desert boots with more streamlined, tailored pieces.
