Get the Look for Less, Ali Larter

It’s so weird that it is now January here in the Northeast yet we are still having some somewhat MILD weather! I stocked up on the sweaters and battened down the hatches as far as just pulling the sweater card and winterizing my wardrobe. But when we are given the opportunity to let the public see our winter wardrobes, we need to step it up… like Ali Larter. She looks effortlessly gorge and casual at the same time. Get her look for less!

What’s Your Shopping Experience with BeachMint?

No surprise that I’m a fan of the BeachMint family:  JewelMint, StyleMint, BeautyMint, and the newest member ShoeMint.   My closet is packed with StyleMint Ts and my daughters love the interesting accessories that JewelMint turns out each month.  But if you follow any of these Mints on Facebook, or have had personal shopping experiences with them, you may have noticed that the customer service department doesn’t quite have its act together.  (As a business owner myself, I have one thought for the Mints:  Get with it guys…)  There was the bungled launch of  StyleMint Cashmere last week, and it seems that all the Mints are having supply issues.  Personally, all my shopping experiences with them have been fine, BUT, my recent order with ShoeMint ran into some challenges.  After ordering the Pauline’s in Wine, I received an email notifying me that they were out of stock and would I like to be wait listed.  Yes, I would.  I placed my (waitlisted) order on December 2 and finally received my shoes on December 20!  Snaps to the customer service peeps (maybe they are reading the comments on FB) they included a little sumptin’-sumptin’ from JewelMint as an apology for the delay, and my shoes and I are now becoming acquainted.

I will say this for the quality of the shoes:  It’s really good.  Granted the heel height is absurd.  I mean seriously, I’m almost 6’2″ in 6″ heels, and who really has the kind of day that warrants that kind of wedge (?), but for the random day that I feel the need to rock my inner Gabby Reese, I’ll take it.   They fit true to size and the quality of the leather and craftsmanship is excellent.

I’ll be interested to see how the second month of ShoeMint goes.  My impression is that the inaugural month was a tough one.  And I’m sure that there is a segment of the shoe buying population that would love to see some diversity in the heel height options.

Overall I’ll give the Mints 4 out of 5 stars.  I love the concept and the quality of the merchandise, but if they are going to keep me a captive customer they are going to have to up their game in the selection and delivery departments.

Shoes To Inspire A Spree

Have you reached that point in your holiday shopping where you just can’t stand it any more?  The practical stuff, the gifts for weird family members, the stocking stuffers…sometimes I just get a brain cramp from it all.  Generally, I love shopping, and I usually subscribe to the “one for you, two for me” rule when I’m on a gift buying mission, but there is SO much pressure attached to holiday shopping that I put it off to the last possible minute and then end up wishing that I had been more organized and thoughtful, and well,  you know where this is going…

However…I came across these shoes, and they are so radically outrageous and wonderful that I am actually INSPIRED to grab my wallet and finally find the perfect gift for everyone on my list:

Christian Louboutin Alex Pump $4,995

Check out the glittery heel...

Now if only I could afford these shoes I’d be all set!

The Beauty Detox Solution to Get You Through the Holidays

This weekend officially marks the beginning of Holiday Season, that festive time of year when we eat and drink too much, skip the gym because we are so busy going to parties or getting ready to host friends and family, skimp on sleep, and generally undo all the healthy things we have done for ourselves the previous 11 months of the year!  The ironic thing is, maintaining healthy habits during the holidays can actually make the season more enjoyable and fun.

Celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder, whose clients include Hilary Duff and Drew Barrymore, is the author of the book The Beauty Detox Solution.  Kim offers some great suggestions to help you stay on track with your health and nutrition plan during the hectic holiday season:
Drink Smart: Don’t start guzzling liquids once you arrive at a party, as drinking too much while eating dilutes digestive enzymes, slows digestion and causes bloating. Instead, fill up on water between meals, so you’re not dehydrated when you sit down at the table, mistaking thirst for hunger and ultimately over-eating. When it comes to alcohol, avoid beer, tequila and rum, which cause sugar imbalances and bloating. If you really want a cocktail, stick to vodka. Wine is fine in moderation as it’s not as hard on the liver as hard alcohol.

Start Raw: Begin each meal with a salad or even a few veggie sticks. Raw food not only contains bulky fiber but also the  full spectrum of its own enzymes, which allows it to digest itself, and act as a “cushion” for the other heavier foods that follow. The fiber and water in raw foods will also help keep portion sizes under control.

Slim Pickings: Remember that holiday parties are for spending time with loved ones, not binge eating. Stick to raw greens and non-starchy vegetables (steamed, cooked with little to no oil), which can be consumed without restriction. Nuts should be limited to 1 ounce if you aim to lose weight and 2-3 ounces daily (maximum) as a general recommendation. Limit meat, fish and goat’s cheese to 3 ounces (maximum).

Sweet Swaps: With some easy beauty-boosting modifications, holiday treats can still be delicious. Bake with coconut oil, a beauty fat that won’t oxidize under high baking temperatures and nourishes the thyroid. To sweeten, try a combination of stevia and xylitol instead of refined sugar and almond or coconut milk instead of dairy milk.

Stylish Costume Ideas on StyleMint.com

Style Mint (the cousin of Jewel Mint – the fabulous site that is sponsoring a give away ending tomorrow on The Fashionable Housewife…don’t forget to enter..!) is one of my favorite shopping sites.  I read a quote that said “…anything the Olsen twins touch turns to gold…” and I couldn’t agree more.  The T-shirts the offer on StyleMint.com are very stylish and made with great quality and attention to detail.  But what I’m loving right now are their Halloween styling suggestions.  Today’s theme is Witchy Vibes.  Check out this Tumblr:

Open Your Wallets on Open Sky

It seems that membership only shopping clubs are all the rage, and it’s hard to quibble with some of the fantastic discounts you can find on merchandise that you may (or may not!) need.  The newest entrant into the “We Want your Dollars” club is Open Sky, an invitation only, membership required shopping club whose spin is celebrity endorsements.  But wait, you say…what about all the celebrity endorsed clubs already out there?  Well, on Open Sky,  you log in and choose a la carte which celebs or product categories most interest you or most satisfy your shopping black hole.

According to their web site, ”…on OpenSky, you create your own experience. You decide, based on your personal interests and passions, which people to connect with—we like to call them “curators.” They’re a growing group of tastemakers and experts who are deeply passionate about what they do and what they love.   They curate the shopping experience for you, but you handpick your team of curators. You become the center of YOUR experience.  OpenSky gives you the “benefits” of traditional shopping (great prices, efficient delivery), some they don’t (extraordinary and unexpected things from people all over the world, amazing customer service, friendly return policies) and some they will never be able to (an experience that’s personal and designed by you).”

Sounds pretty good for what really boils down to a more customized Rue La La or Gilt Groupe.  I’ve been receiving the Open Sky emails for about a week now and the merchandise is familiar and the prices better than retail.  It is interesting to see what the “curators” choose to promote, but so far I’m not overly impressed, nor have I purchased anything.  If you are interested you can log on to OpenSky.com  to see what’s going on.

We’re always curious to know what our readers get excited about, so if you have tried Open Sky or another membership shopping site, leave a comment and tell us about it.
