Top 3 Beauty Trends At the Oscars

Bruce GraysonAt the 85th Academy Awards, there were plenty of leading ladies rocking some of the hottest beauty trends this season. Celebrity makeup artist Bruce Grayson has shared his top three trends with us, as well as tricks to pull off these looks yourself.

1. Bold Smoky Eyes

As seen on: Jennifer Lawrence, Amanda Seyfried

A bold smoky eye is a classic evening look, and any woman can rock this trend with the right know-how. Grayson says:

Classic Hollywood eyes are created by incorporating just the right amount of drama and finishing off with a strong lash. I like to prep lashes with the new Olay Regnerist Micro-Sculpting Eye Serum and Lash Duo, because the serum works to instantly thicken and nourish, while separating the lashes for easy mascara application, laying the base for ultra-sexy eyes.

To re-create the look at home, swipe on a deep blue or gray shadow across lids to create depth. Don’t forget to coat lashes with at least two coats of black mascara! Finally, make sure your brows can stand up to the look: fill them in with pencil, if necessary, to create a bold complement to your smoky eyes.

2. Glowing Skin

As seen on: Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon

Every woman wants to achieve glowing, flawless and luminous skin. The good news? You totally can, with these pro tips from Grayson:

Glowing, flawless skin was seen on virtually every woman at last night’s Oscars.  Skin prep is essential to create this look (deep cleansing, exfoliation and moisturization is the key to ensure a fabulous complexion).  I always recommend Olay’s Regenerist Wrinkle Revolution as a tool for creating smooth skin.

After prepping your skin, mix a dab of highlighter with your regular foundation to create a lit-from-within glow. Alternatively, you can use a highlighter on brow bones, cheeks and your chin to create a more pronounced luminous effect.

3. Bold Lips

As seen on: Oliva Munn, Jessica Chastain

Even if you’re a little timid when it comes to bold lips, nothing pulls a look together more than a fierce lip color. If you do it right, you can definitely rock this trend! Says Grayson:

Hollywood glamour is defined by a bold lip.  And last night we saw this look defined with a classic red lip.  The great thing about a bold lip is that it really works to compliment your skin and overall look.

Whether you choose pink , red or daring orange, a bold lip can instantly transform your look. If you opt for classic red, fill in lips with a complementary lip pencil; this will act as a base and ensure your lipstick stays put. After applying your lip hue, top it off with a coat of gloss for lips that shine all night long.

What do you think of these beauty trends? Will you be rockin’ any this season?

Must-Read: DIY Recipe to Reduce Cellulite

CoffeeHow many of us suffer from embarrassing and unsightly cellulite? Unfortunately, it’s impossible to completely get rid of it, but there are things we can do to temporarily minimize its appearance.

Indie Lee, founder of the all natural skincare line Indie Lee & Co has shared one of her DIY recipes with us. This at-home scrub not only works as a natural exfoliant, but will help reduce the appearance of cellulite as well.

For this recipe, you’ll need:

  • 1/2 oz sweet almond oil
  • 2 tbsp coffee grinds (Lee recommends espresso roast)
  • 5 tbsp coconut oil
  • 3/4 cup arrowroot powder (a natural alternative to talc)

1. In a large bowl, combine coffee grinds and sweet almond oil until thoroughly mixed.

2. Add the coconut oil; mix well.

3. Fold in the arrowroot powder, making sure to get rid of any clumps.

Bonus Tip: Indie Lee recommends keeping the mixture refrigerated for one day to make it easier to scoop out.

That’s it! With just a few ingredients and a little time, you can have a home-made recipe to help exfoliate skin naturally while minimizing the appearance of unsightly cellulite.

Quick and Easy Beauty Tips for a Better You

I love checking out quick and easy tricks to add to my beauty regime. The easier the better; you can learn them quick and adopt them even quicker! I had to share some of the tips that my favorites at Marie Claire have put out there and paired those tips with some of my favorite products!

Trying to look like you had your 8 hours when you tossed and turned all night? Avoid piling on the thick foundation. Use a tinted moisturizer instead, followed by maybe a beige eye pencil — it counteracts any redness and puffiness around your eyes. My suggestion? Clinique Moisture Sheer Tint SPF 15, $27.00

For full lips go for a glossy look, Yum! Try first outlining the perimeter of your lips using a concealer brush dipped in bronzer two shades deeper than your skin tone. Then, top pout with gold, peach, or coral gloss. Mmmmmm, I like Cover Girl Raspberry Wet Slicks Fruit Spritzers, $5.99

This is a tip on making your smallish eyes, open right up! You’ll want to  stay away from dark eyeshadows out there. Start with a nude base shadow, then apply shadow a shade or two darker than the base to your crease and use your finger to blend the color up toward your eyebrow. All in one favorite, Jane Iredale Perfectly Nude Eyeshadow Kit, $52.oo, makes this an easy trick!

When you are covering up blemishes, make sure you choose the color for what you are covering up. For example, orange-tinged concealers combat blueish under-eye circles. A mint-green concealer hides the redness of a pimple or blemish. The idea is that concealers act as neutralizers. When I have a nasty looking blemish, I attack it with Dermablend Smooth Indulgence Redness Concealer, $20.00

I had to be converted to toner but now that I have been, I am a loyal user. To sop up oil and refresh makeup, lightly mist your face with toner, then pat with a tissue. You then can finish with a dusting of  your favorite loose powder. My first and overall favorite toner has to be Aveda All Sensitive Toner, $25.00

Now you can look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed no matter how many hours you slave away in the kitchen this Thanksgiving!

Dubbed ‘botox in a swab,’ Hollywood Secrets uses the peptide Argireline to relax the muscles under skin and smooth fine lines instantly.

Post-cleanser and pre-moisturizer, snap the top and apply with the q-tip applicator as if you’re actually erasing any fine lines on your face. Wait 2 minutes and watch wrinkles tighten and fade away! The effect lasts 12 hours, so it’s perfect for special occasions. Plus, with prolonged daily use, there’s a 27% permanent reduction of lines – the most you can get without injections!

Glam Halloween Looks from Celebrity Makeup Artist Brett Freedman

Halloween is a time to break out humorous or gory costumes, but for the single ladies out there, it’s an excuse to dress up and look ultra glam. Learn how to get the most from your makeup, and the rest of the costume comes easy!

Here are simple beauty and costume tips from celeb makeup artist Brett Freedman that will guarantee all eyes on you:

Perfect Cat Eyes: Give a silver dusting to the whole lid from lash line to brow line and into the tear duct. Add a sweep of a purple-gray hue to the crease of the eyelid to add depth. Then use a felt tip liquid eyeliner (Brett loves Sephora’s version) and lightly dot on the lid, staying as close as possible to the lash line. Go back over and this time press the felt tip firmly into skin and ‘connect the dots’ to smooth the line, fanning it up and out toward the temples on the ends. Finish off your makeup look with pretty pink cheeks and lips!

  • Pair with a pink form-fitting dress, pearls, pumps and the perfect clutch!

Bombshell Makeup: Start with a foundation that’s a shade lighter than you usually use (try Revlon’s Custom Creations foundation). This sets the stage for the crisp, retro look. Shade the crease of your eye with a soft beige-y taupe shadow. With a sponge-tipped applicator, apply a matte, bone colored shadow (or pale face powder) all over lids and add a silvery shimmer along the brow bone to highlight. The black liquid liner is very important. Run from tear duct to outer corner very close to the lash line. Extend liner up and out. Corner false lashes finish this alluring eye look. Fill out lips with a true blue-red lip liner and fill in with a deep red lipstick. Use very minimal blush in a soft pink. Ice the cake with Marilyn’s iconic mole aka your black liquid liner!

  • Pair with a white halter dress…don’t forget the windy subway grate!

Bombshell Makeup: For the brunette and redhead beauties that can’t pull off the Marilyn look without a wig, try the same makeup as above, but pair with voluminous hair, cherry red nails, maillot bathing suit, and pumps!

If you can’t handle a bathing suit, try a sexy dress like this red Retro Hollywood Dress from Stop Staring!.

Pop Art Eyes: You’ll need two sets of false eyelashes for this monochromatic mod look – one very full, dark pair for the top and a second sparser, spikier pair for the bottom (try Andrea Perma-Lash). Sculpt lid out from the tear duct to outer corner with matte gray shadow – be very exaggerated and rounded and arc it like a rainbow. Take a near-white silver shimmer eye shadow and apply boldly to lid and brow bone. Use a liquid liner on top and bottom, extending on the outer corners horizontally (toward the mid ear, not the temple). Apply false lashes to top and bottom lash lines. Steer clear of blush and go for a very pale, fleshy lipstick or gloss.

  • Pair with a short cropped coif, mini printed shift dress and white boots made for walkin’.

Gold Dewy Makeup: Start with an all over tan and shimmery glow (Vanitymark’s Shimmerskin is great!). Gold and peach tones are your friends. Give you cheeks a sweep of warm apricot blush and work it up around eyes. Get an eye shadow quad in browns – use the palest shade to highlight under the brow bone and layer the shades from lightest to darkest. The darker the shade, the closer it should be to the lash line. Use a deep brown eyeliner pencil on the inner shelf of the eye for extra pop. Apply small, corner lashes to the top outer lash line to amp up lashes. Apply a peachy/golden gloss to lips. For the finishing touch, take a loose, sheer gold powder and dust over eye make up and along the tops of the cheekbones.

  • Pair with a homemade draped toga or your fave little white dress, gladiator sandals and lots of gold bangles.

Smoky Eyes: It’s all about the eyes. Too much is never enough. There will be little other make up so it’s best to get your pow from really working your black eyeliner. Apply base as usual. Use a very neutral lip – clear gloss is best. Blush should be a fleshy, barely there pink. Using a soft black eyeliner, fill in your lid and under eye in quick strokes. Don’t worry about getting it smooth and perfect because (in true rocker style) you’re gonna smudge and blend with your finger. Curl your lashes and apply multiple layers of blue-black mascara (try L’Oreal Voluminous). Once mascara dries, take a small dab of clear lip gloss and rub into lid and lash line. This will give the liner a wet, naughty look. Rock on!

  • Pair with a cropped motorcycle jacket, white tank, skinny jeans and boots…and an air guitar if you’re feeling festive!

Interview With Angela Kinsey of “The Office”

I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity for a phone interview with actress Angela Kinsey, best known for her role TV’s Emmy award winning comedy “The Office”.

She is also in Clairol’s Nice ‘n Easy commercial as “Gigi” – your “Guardian Girlfriend” helping you to keep dark roots at bay! Ms. Kinsey was kind enough to answer a few questions for us at The Fashionable Housewife. She’s sounded like such a down-to-earth person and like many of you, she is also a busy mom.

Marie: Angela, what made you decide to be a part of the Clairol Nice ‘n Easy Campaign?

Angela: I grew up in Indonesia and my mom used to stock up on Clairol products to bring there so we’d have them. She did my hair during college and throughout my youth growing up. We’ve always used Clairol because it’s accessible, inexpensive and a really great product.

Marie: Do you have any favorite hair coloring tips you could recommend for those of us that color our hair?

Angela: First off I would leave the ends alone and concentrate on the roots. To extend the color, trying washing your hair every other day or longer if you can go without it – wear a ponytail if you must. I also deep condition once a month and I also use Aussie 3 Minute Miracle. I basically try to use products that are accessible in drugstores or stores like Target. I’d rather spend my free time with my baby than sitting in a salon, which sometimes can turn out to be a long commute, so Clairol is great for me and like I said, I’ve been using it for years.

Marie: What would you say are your top 3 beauty product must haves – those items you’d take with you if you were stranded on a desert island?

Angela: Naturally, I’d take Clairol so I can touch up my roots; can’t have roots showing on a desert island! Second would be Lancome Juicy Tubes and third would be Oil of Olay Moisturizer.

Marie: So, what’s it like being on The Office – it must be interesting and exciting!

Angela: It’s the most fun and best job I’ve ever had – it’s like lightning in a bottle. It’s a very family like atmosphere and everyone is a great. I’m very thankful to have such a great job.”

Angela also offered her own personal beauty tip / secret !

Angela: Ladies, if you have a zit and it’s at the beginning, you know, when it’s big and pulsing, take an aspirin and make a paste of it with water and apply it at the beginning of the zit and leave it on and the next day the swelling will be gone!!”

Thanks to Angela Kinsey for taking time out of her busy day to chat with me! And thanks for the great tips!
